why...oh why...

would anyone have 146 animals (including reptiles, dogs, cats, birds) in their house? I just heard about this in class today. A couple in delaware have been arrested and charged with violating health codes, their children have been taken away, and they ar being held in custody. Is this extreme punishment? After all, they were just trying to help homeless animals. Shouldn't they just be charged with stupidity?

I actually read a story about this a year or so ago, specifically about a woman who bred tigers in her home...I think it might have been a New Yorker story? Anyway, there's a pattern of behavior (disorder?) that's common in which a person will start taking in strays and pets and it gets to a point to where they don't know where to stop, and in their obsessive desire to care for these animals, they end up abusing and neglecting the animals as their collection extends beyond their means. It was a bizarre story, but apparently not an uncommon phenomenon.
