I need to shed a few excess pounds and I thought about doing the Dr Atkins Diet. I bought the book yesterday and I thought I would ask you good orgers whether it's a good idea or not biggrin

Any of you guys tried it? Were you successful? Any horror stories about it?

I hear he weighs much less now. It must be good! biggrin

It was apparently a head injury that he died from? Probably had too much fat go to his head and he lost balance

Well, you never went to school and now you live on a mushroom cloud, so I hardly think that your opinion means anything.

Now, if you were to pledge allegiance - I promise you that it IS cool, then things might be different.

the atkins diet is good if you actually do the reading and pay attention to things that you eat. it is hard to stay away from carbs because almost everything has carbs. I have used this diet to lose some quick wieght before a public thing (like weddings, special parties, etc) or if I just wanna lose some holiday pounds or whatever. This is not the kind of diet I would recommend living on, as Dr. Atkins suggets. It can be potentially bad for your heart.
If you decide to try it, invest in atkins advantage snacks too. because when you want a sweet snack you won't be able to haver anything else. They are low carb snack bars and shakes. You can eat lots of tofu and soy products as well to avoid the bad effects of too much meat in your diet. When i do the akins i usually have one meat dish during the day and the rest are vegetarian meals. This limits the fat you are taking in (as well as the carbs) and your body, in turn, begins to burn the fat you've stored. This is the fat you want to get rid of to lose that quick 5-10 pounds.

I work with many doctors and not one of them has anything positive to say about the diet. I know it can cause serious health problems. I'd say read the book and understand it. I don't think it's anything to stick to for a long period of time.

for short term weight loss it seems to be ok. in theory you consume less calories overall because the small amount of meat products and "pleasure" food is more satisfying than an ton of low fat high carb diet food. One of the pitfalls of diet food is people consume more because 1.) it tastes like shit and they never really feel satisfied 2.) they think because its diet food that its ok to eat more. The end result is they wind up consuming too many calories and never loose the weight. But like many people have pointed out, the Atkins diet, over a prolonged period of time, can cause other serious health problems.

um, dr. atkins died at, like, 88 years old from a fall. He had a very serious head injury. It was nothing to do with his diet. 88 is a pretty long life, ya know.

He fell on the ice, and I guess he was in pretty bad shape before he passed away just this last Thursday.

I have tried the diet before, but didn't stick to it very long. If you like things like bread, pasta, anything that has carbs in it, then it's not the diet for you.

But if you like protein foods, and are not a "carb addict", then it would be a great diet. Remember, it is important to take vitamin suppliments because with this diet you are ommitting an entire food group.

Man, it is supposed to be pretty hard on the kidneys, trying to process all that fucking meat.

It is easier to cut back on obvious indulgences in carbohydrates (ie. desserts, sweet candy treats, SODA!! REPLACE SODA WITH WATER!) and just get exercising more than usual. Hey-- at least the weather is getting better for outdoor activity, right?
