Folks like to shit on Ang Lee's film, but as a longtime reader of the Hulk, Lee used a lot of elements from the comics, particularly issue #312. Here's a quick synopsis:
Bruce Banner’s life story. We open with the harrowing scene of Bruce Banner’s birth. The delivery is painful and dangerous, so the doctor tells Bruce’s father that he will have to perform a C-Section to save both mother and child. Bruce makes it clear that he’s not concerned if the child lives or dies, but that his wife’s safety is priority. Now… this stood out to me as an incredibly real, dark, and human moment. As I read on, I was beginning to suspect that we were going to read the story of a man who never wanted kids coping with the idea of raising his son, whose birth killed the love of his life. That’s not what happened though – instead, Bruce’s mother survives the pregnancy, which I did like, because this relationship winds up being very interesting. What I was a little disappointed with, though, is that Bruce’s dad quickly becomes an all out psychopath. He is consumed by his paranoid delusions that the radiation he was regularly exposed to as a scientist had turned his son into a mutant, which leads him to abuse both his son and wife before going on to murder the latter. I was hoping for a bit more nuance after that first scene set up the expectations of this character’s path, but I understand the choices her. The narrative through-line of Bruce’s dad suspecting his son of being a monster only for Bruce to actually become that monster in adulthood is powerful, and is symbolized beautifully in the artwork by a sketch of the Hulk’s silhouette, rendered in green, floating above Bruce in every scene, from childhood leading all the way up to that fateful day. Story sucked and so did the cgi. Only die hard Ang Lee fans liked the movie. |

Outside of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Brokeback Mountain he's not really done much of note. And even then, Brokeback Mountain is kind of overrated. As I've said before, I don't read comic books (although I've just come into possession of over 300 of them) so I don't know if his Hulk movie was a faithful adaptation or not. All I know is that, as a movie, it wasn't any good. Eric Bana might have done better with a decent script but for the most part, it seemed woefully miscast. The CGI was horrible, even by the standards of the time and the whole movie feels like a product of its time. A time when studios seen the success of Spider-Man and rushed out superhero movies in order to piggyback off its success without taking the time to ensure that the movie was good. Think of Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Ghost Rider, Catwoman, Elektra, The Punisher etc. Were it not for Batman Begins and Kevin Feige taking over at Marvel Studios and starting the MCU, superhero movies would have gone the way of the western. And movies like Hulk, Fantastic Four and Catwoman would have been to blame. | |

Yup there are. I think more of his early films and his Chinese/Tawainese production. Guessing they really wanted an Asian director to make it big Hollywood even though Hulk sucked big time. Good points how Marvel really had some turkeys there, they got there act together now. The first Blade was good though part 2 and 3 were just ok. For the Hulk I did like the casting of Jennifer Conelly and Eric Bana but everything else was so bland. [Edited 12/15/18 12:01pm] |

honestly, i think it's easily the best spiderman film ever made, & it's probably my favourite film of the year, and i've seen 116 2018 releases. i didn't think anything would top paddington & madeline's madeline for me this year, but an animated spiderman film did. i didn't love the trailer, & i had no expectations for this film, & now i can't stop myself from praising its greatness to anyone who will listen. if you're a fan, i have to think you'll fall for it. i don't think any spiderman film has come this close to capturing the feel of the comic & the spirit of the character. | |

well, i've had the gift of unlimited time more or less the last few years, & i've used that opportunity to fill it with movies & books in a way i haven't been able to since i was a teen, i suppose. i'm not necessarily proud of this, but my letterboxd account shows that i've watched 702 movies this year. & I got through 54 books. & if i lived where you do, or somewhere equivalent, live music would have been a bigger part of that. i'm sure you could go out every night of the week & see something unique or great or both. | |

'Aquaman' Surges to $51.5 Million in 2nd Weekend at Box Office"Aquaman" is becoming exactly what Warner Bros. hoped it would be for the DC Universe. After passing the worldwide total of "Justice League" on Friday, the James Wan film is on its way to becoming the studio's first billion-dollar release since "The Dark Knight Rises" in 2012. In the second weekend of its domestic run, "Aquaman" has added an estimated $51.5 million, holding on strong this holiday season with just a 24 percent drop from its $67.4 million opening. The film now has a 10-day total of $188.7 million, with IMAX accounting for 13 percent of that total with $24.8 million. In second place is Disney's "Mary Poppins Returns," which is following the box office trajectory of previous holiday season musicals like "The Greatest Showman" with a second weekend total of $28 million. That's approximately a 21 percent increase over its opening weekend, and puts the film around $100 million domestic after 12 days in theaters. In third is Paramount's "Bumblebee," which wasn't able to improve on its opening with "Aquaman" still peeling off much of the "Transformers" spinoff's core demographic. With a $21 million second weekend, the blockbuster has an estimated 10-day total of $67 million. Sony's "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" did see an increase in its third weekend, boosting 12 percent for a total of $18.6 million. That pushes its domestic total to $104 million. WB completes the top five with "The Mule," which also saw a third weekend increase to $11.9 million, pushing its total to $60 million.
