saw aquaman.. it was ok... maybe 2 and a half stars... for perspective i'm not really into superhero movies. I thought the latest thor was just ok... and i'd say black panther is the most overrated movie i've ever seen... not the worst film... but the most ovearrated

i quite like jason mamoa... but his acting chops are never going to set the world on fire... i think amber heard was a really poor casting choice... just didn't work for me... they needed someone more enigmatic

It wasn't as good as Wonder Woman (2017), but it was a really entertaining, visually stunning film, and it was better than Justice League (2017). Jason Mamoa was perfect as Aqauman love I think Nicole Kidman is a good actress (when given good material to work with eg. Big Little Lies (2017), but she really needs to lay off the botox. Plus, Amber Heard who is usually wooden in everthing I have ever seen her in, wasn't too bad as Mera, which was suprising to me lol I give Aquaman (2018) a 4 out of 5 popcorn

The Favourite (4.5 of 5). Not for those who need a protagonist, but so very well done. The acting was wonderful, especially Olivia Coleman who created a queen unlike any other. I imagine it will do well with academy award nominations, including up to three for acting(Coleman for Best
Actress, and Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz). While I can understand why the Golden Globe gave it a nomination for Best Comedy/Musical Picture given it's dark humor, it is neither light hearted nor a laugh riot. All of my companions found it "disturbing'. If this doesn't scare you away, go see it!

i've actually bumped my rating of the favourite up to a 5 (4 initially) because it's rattled around my head & refused to leave since the day i saw it, & i love it when anything has that effect on me.

speaking of disturbing, at my boxing day screening of the favourite, i had the pleasure of being seated next to a kid who could not have been more than 6 years old, i reckon. & he & his dad & (i assume) older brother stuck through it to the end, from the man masturbating through his pants at the beginning right up to the (spoiler, i guess) naked man being pelted with pomegranates.

it's a funny old world, sometimes.

It really does stay with you. I was alarmed that the first thing I thought of when I woke up in bed the morning after I saw it was the queen. Not really how I wanted to bring in the day wink .

I was actually relieved once I was watching it that I didn't bring my 13 year old twins. I hope some of this went over the tyke's head.

Bumblebee (2018) - On the run in the year of 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie, on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken.

A Transformers movie that isn't terrible! Although the barrage of 80s songs within the first 30 minutes or so was overkill. 3/5

The Apartment (1960) - A man tries to rise in his company by letting its executives use his apartment for trysts, but complications and a romance of his own ensue.

This classic is the perfect film to watch on New Year's Eve. 5/5

Vice 6/10

A strange Dick Cheney bio-pic. There seem to be a lot of filmmakers having trouble with tone. Spike Lee and his weird tonal problems with Black Klansman, and then there was Sorry to Bother You. Tonal problems are usually just bad filmmaking and direction, and think that’s mostly the case here.

Another interesting thing this movie shares with other recent films such a as Bohemian Rhapsodody and A Star is Born is that parts of the movie are shoddy while the acting is amazing. This is the case here as Christian Bale’s performance as Dick Cheney is phenomenal. I think I would rather see Bale win the Oscar over Rami Malek or Bradley Cooper he is so good.

Overall, the movie is a mess with frustratingly strange and unneeded flourishes such as Cheney’s dead heart donor narrating parts of the movie. Who thought that was a good idea?

This story is too serious and too real to play for giggles, but if they wanted to make a satire, then they should have gone all the way and made a straight-up satire instead of whatever this thing is.

But this movie did leave me angry. It re opened a lot of wounds. After the end of the Bush administration I thought we as a nation would never allow ignorant white America and Fox News dictate the direction of the nation, but here we are again.

Green Book..best movie of the year

I just saw it last night and came to this thread to review it, and well...there you go. I am not sure if it is the best film, but it certainly is one of the most enjoyable. It has the heart that is lacking in so many movies this year. The acting is excellent. The fried chicken scene is a classic.

After posting this, I went to read Rotten Tomatoes to read what others thought. There I was shocked to learn that Mahershala Ali who plays the musician here was the same actor who was so outstanding as the drug dealer in Moonlight! This impresses me so much because the roles are so different that once I read that he was in Moonlight I had to go to the cast description because I couldn't figure out which character he could have played. Both he and Vigo deserve best actor nominations for Green Book.
