Meanwhile, let's talk some "Deadpool 2"!

SPOILER ALERT. I guess. Honestly, I don't remember.

For a change of pace, I decided to see "Deadpool 2" at the local art house cinema. In a dry county. At 10:00 in the morning. With my pastor.

No, I didn't! I got good and drunk at the Booze and Chow! On a Friday night! By myself!

I know, I know - going by yourself to a movie on a Friday night isn't a good look. Friday Night is Date Night. But my date/wife was out of town. My other date/son said he didn't care for Deadpool's brand of humor. That left me and three glasses of movie-theater-quality pino noir. Let the games begin!

Or more accurately, the previews. There I was, with a flatbread pizza and three glasses of pre-purchased-one-glass-at-a-time fine wine. Shall we activate the RodeoSchro Movie Previews Indicator Device? We shall!

As I recall - and honestly you should not put much stock into anything I say when I preface it with "as I recall" - the previews centered around comic book stuff. I don't ever watch comic book stuff. Except "Deadpool" who, I am told, is a comic book character. It's all CGI. Yuck. The only good preview looked to be an Ed Helms movie called "Tag". It's about some middle-aged guys playing tag. And it's based on a true story. No, really.

But I have a very sneaking suspicion that "Tag" is one of those movies where all the funny parts are in the preview. This means that I have to watch "Tag" to see if I'm right. And I will. Be right, that is. To quote Prince, "I am always right. Even when I'm wrong, I'm right". (Yes, he said that and yes, that's how I roll now.)

"Deadpool 2" starts off with Deadpool firing up a cancer stick. Yuck! But it's so he can kill himself. Well, cigarettes will do the trick. They kill everyone. But in Deadpool's case, he wants it to happen faster than normal, as in immediately. So he blows himself up by igniting all his gas ovens while sitting on four 55-gallon drums of gasoline. But Deadpool can't die! We all know that!

And here we get to the plot - Deadpool Wants To Die. And the problem isn't that the plot is that Deadpool wants to die. The problem is that THERE IS A PLOT AT ALL. Deadpool don't need no stinkin' plot!

I'm sure that years from now, film students at USC will use "Deadpool 2" as their main case study. How do you make a movie with dozens of the funniest jokes and lines of the year, and yet still make viewers want to watch something else. That's what they did with "Deadpool 2".

Because I laughed my keister off time and time again at the lines. They're awesome! But when Deadpool wasn't cracking wise, the movie dragged. I mean it really dragged. I guess Deadpool is a comic book character after all.

I didn't care about his chick. I didn't care that he wanted to be Dadpool instead of Deadpool. I didn't care that his heart was in the right place. I didn't care for any of the mutants. I didn't care for any of the X Force, except for the chick whose superpower was luck. That was mildly original. But back to things I didn't care for.

I didn't care for his melancholy. I didn't care for the prison. I didn't care for Cable. I didn't care for Juggernaut. I didn't care for the trash can on Juggernaut's head. And I really, really, really didn't care for the FireFist kid. Saving him was supposed to be Deadpool's saving grace that would astrally reunite him with his dead wife but the kid was unlikeable. I was hoping he'd die a gruesome death.

I only want smartass lines delivered in rapid-fire succession while Deadpool artistically dismembers as many people as possible. This does not happen in "2" nearly as much as it did in the first movie. And yet...

...the funny stuff is AWESOME! Man oh man, Ryan Reynolds as Deadspin is absolutely the funniest thing in movies today. My son may not care for Deadpool's humor but I LOVE IT. Don't get me wrong, I definitely advise you see this movie. You probably like comic books more than I do. You probably know who all these CGI things are. You may very well like the whole movie, rather than just the funny parts I liked.

The post-credit stuff was the best. I'm not going to spoil them for you. But I promise you that it's worth your $12 to sit through the movie and watch them. Especially the very last one. "You're welcome, Canada".

Speaking of credit, I conservatively estimate that 300 people worked on just the CGI. And by the time the credits came on I was mostly sober, so this "as I recall" can be trusted.

Three hundred comic drawers! Wow! I will bet you that 250 of them worked on Josh Brolin's Cable character. I'm relatively certain that only one eye of his was an actual human appendage. Pretty much everything, every part, of Cable is CGI. I don't know why they hired Brolin for just his eye. Oh well, that will be part of the case studies of the future.

Oh, and they missed one incredible joke opportunity. Cable has some laser ray gun that inexplicably has a knob that looks like this:



Notice anything? It only goes to 10. WHY DOESN'T IT GO TO 11?!? IT SHOULD GO TO 11! ALL KNOBS MADE SINCE 1983 SHOULD GO TO 11! If for some reason you've lived in a cave the last 35 years, here's why:





I expressed my displeasure at the non-eleven-ness by shouting "Go to 11!" the third time they showed that knob. But unfortunately, very few (meaning: none) of my fellow filmophiles verbally appreciated my remark, although I'm sure that internally they were all high-fiving me.

We'll start this new thread off with a "Deadpool 2" rating of 6 Dead Ryan Reynolds out of 10 Dead Ryan Reynolds (it'll make sense after you watch the post-movie credits).

The Matrix Reloaded (2003)

Not nearly as groundbreaking as the original, and the special effects in the big sequence were decidedly cheesier and don't age well. But it was a smart, action-packed movie that got a bad rap.

I'd label this one The Passion of the Neo. But still, I enjoyed the movie, the last in a trilogy that actually made you think. it was also good at character development, something many of the action/comic movies today struggle with.

Thanks I watched it today and I loved it because it was so stupid, so over the top and yet it had some emotional scenes, especially involving Vanessa. Plus, the one liners had me in stitches along with the opening credit theme song sung by Celine Dion and that celeb cameo who played The Vanisher . And yes I totally agree Frozen "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?" does sound like Yentl's "Papa Can You Hear Me?" I give Deadpool 2 (2018) a 5 out of 5 Finally, that post-credit was hands down the best one yet......hats off to you Mr Reynolds all is forgiven

so my library hold finally came through...

meh...over-rated. i'll paraphrase roger ebert. a good character makes you believe they know and do things outside of what they're showing in the story. you can do that with little to no character development. this movie does not. and, really? frances mcdormand for best actress? i mean, her performance was fine...but it seemed she just showed up to work. nothing extraordinary...

as far as a movie being a movie and not trying to be anything else, i'll give it (a generous, imo) 3/5. i was disappointed.

FINALLY saw it last night!

Truly wonderful.

A few things bothered me about the movie;

- why was the Vision such a useless lump in this film? In the comics and the last movie, Vision has major powers. If he can morph through walls, why would a blade injure him so badly?

- what was up with the discord between Dr Strange and Tony Stark? A little forced I think.
- what was up with the dramatic ending between Spidey & Ironman? Very Frodo-Samwise.

- shouldn't Thor's clothes have been burned to cinders by the sun's beam?????
- why was Hulk being a punk?

- WHY was Thanos given such a likeable angle????

But my nit-picking aside, the movie was fantastic!

but good, all the way through. interesting drifting camera shots, neat droning soundtrack. it moves at a cold, dark, methodical pace, but it seemed just right in terms of length and feel.

but it's bleak.

My guess: Magic is the one science Tony Stark doesn't understand. It unnerves him. And Dr. Strange sees in Tony, the same arrogance/overconfidence Strange had when he was a surgeon before his accident--which probably rubs Strange the wrong way as well.

Andrei Zvyagintsev makes great contemporary Russian films--such slow-moving beauty. I loved the three I've seen, Loveless, Leviathan and Elena.

one of the movie podcasts that i follow had leviathan as their top film of 2013 - i'd always meant to catch up with it. i'm even more interested in tracking it down, having seen loveless.

riki-oh: the story of ricky (1991) 3.5/5 riki punches holes in peoples heads & stomachs, a guy tries to strangle him with his own intestines, etc. it's a lot of fun, and i finally found out where this gif comes from.

Deadpool 2 (2018)

Enjoyable enough, a few LOL moments, but for a anti-franchise franchise, it's produced the most formulaic comic book film this year.

Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

This movie begs the question, "how much Star Wars is too much Star Wars?" The numbers say, "2 movies inside of 6 months is too much." But in terms of quality, Ron Howard made an entertaining film with good performances all around, and just enough new insight on elements of the Skywalker Saga to tie in the die-hards. I enjoyed it fine. Once is enough.

i dunno, man...i just finished reading 'going clear' last night, along with watching a good amount of youtube videos regarding scientology...the jury is still out on whether my respect for cruise as an ACTOR has been diminished or reinforced through the process; cuz he sure is a ding dong. but, whatevs. he seems like he likes himself quite a bit.

I guess it’s a nostalgia thing. I saw it for the first time last year and I laughed and cringed all the way through. It did not age well. I’s a terrible film all the way around.

LOL, but it was a good enough movie for "Pacific Rim" to rip off almost scene for scene.

The actor's chosen religion shouldn't influence your enjoyment of his movies. All religions are wacky anyway so it's not fair to say he's a "ding doing" for believing in whatever he believes in. Besides, it's not as though the characters he's playing are scientologists.

i'm not sweating him as a scientologist...i think he's a ding dong cuz he comes off as a ding dong (i did see one clip of him on the david letterman show in which he seemed to break out of his 'tom cruiseness' that was rather endearing). i mean, scientology subjects its adherents to some pretty heinous shit; but that ain't on cruise. it's a cult of personal ambition and ego and self satisfaction. more power to him, if that's what makes him happy.

as far as the entertainment he produces, i could take or leave most of it (although his performance in 'magnolia' is one of my favorite actings ever), but i may have a new found respect for his acting ability knowing how far removed from his actual personality his performances are; or, i just might not really give a shit.
