I suppose he makes the kind of movies that you either like or you don't. A lot of his characters are very similar people with very similar motivation. I love most of his movies though so the fact that they're all similar is great for me. And when he does branch out in things like Magnolia he proves that he's a very good actor when he wants to be. I'm sure we'll see more of that side as he gets older and action movie roles are harder to come by. Until then though I'm happy to see Mission Impossible and Jack Reacher sequels for as long as he's able to make them. And thank you

i don't discount him because he's tom cruise...i like a few things he's done. 'oblivion', 'edge of tomorrow', 'far and away', 'legend', 'all the right moves', 'rain man'....shit, probably a few others; and definitely more than i would've thought. i guess he didn't ruin 'eyes wide shut'...looking at his imdb page, he's fer sure had more hits than misses.

Deadpool 2 (2018)

Although I liked it for the most part, the raunchy, breaking-the-fourth-wall humor is beginning to wear a little thin. 3/5

liquid sky (1982) 2/5 this is my second crack at liquid sky, and i didn't find it any more interesting or compelling this go around. it's an ugly, dull, & (despite the garish colors & outfits) very visually bland movie. there are no interesting shots or scenes, the characters are blank. even the soundtrack is weak by my reckoning - very repetitive (not always a bad thing in my books) and (this is the deal-breaker) shrill. this thing has stubbornly remained a cult item, loved by many apparently. i has the outline of something i'd generally love, but i am settling on an opinion of hatred more or less, and i now never, ever want to watch it again.

love exposure (2008) 5/5 after catching 'why don't you play in hell' a few months back, it became suddenly important to me to see as many sion sono movies as possible.when i saw a running time on his most highly rated film of almost four hours, my enthusiasm waned. a lot. but i decided i could always try to spread it over two nights. unnecessary. except for a little hiccup in the last hour perhaps, this is one of the most perfectly paced & entertaining films i've ever seen, moving all over the place from almost sit-com goofiness to surreal absurdity to slasher violence. a perfect film, if i dare say so myself.

psychokinesis (2018) 3/5 yeon sang-ho's follow-up to the great 'train to busan.' amusing & good-natured in a slightly sitcom-ish way, but ultimately a bit dull and repetitive. even at a fairly brisk 100 minutes i felt it overstayed its welcome, with too thin a story to warrant a full feature running time. ok, but this is definitely not another train to busan.

i caught that myself earlier this week, & i didn't laugh much. if a comedy doesn't make me laugh, i can't really call it a success, i guess. it had it's moments, but i suppose it just suffers from the diminishing returns that tend to trip up comedy sequels: what's funny & fresh the first go around feels like a bit of a retread now. 3/5

Django Unchained (2012)

Grindhouse, blaxploitative revenge fantasy, with a great performance of Christoph Waltz, who probably makes the difference, and really good turn from Jamie Foxx. Good performance from Leo as well.

Christopher Reeve will never be beaten as Superman. That's a solid 5 star movie for me.

It drags a bit between Acts II and III but it's still the GOAT of comic book flicks. Reeve is the definitive Superman.

i liked the comic mo betta. the movie paints dahmer much more sympathetically. really good, nonetheless. i have a particular affection for the setting/locations, as it's the town i grew up in. 3.5/5




should've won all the oscars. renewed my affection for james ivory. heartwrenching and beautifully acted. 5/5




filmstruck has a liza minelli collection going, and i've been wanting to see this one for a while. dudley moore is fantastic. 5/5




the female lead was a little lackluster, but otherwise quite a touching film. 4/5

I grew up with Reeve and loved it as a kid but I think Cavill surpassed him in the looks department and depth of the character.
But then again there's this moment where the guy looks just like Reeve:

Henry Cavill is a better looking guy but I think Christopher Reeve makes for a more handsome Superman. I don't know how to make sense of that but that's how I feel

I just think Reeve is the better actor and his Superman was more three-dimensional than Cavill's.

Don't get me wrong, I really like what Cavill brings to the role. I'd like to see what Cavill could do with a better filmmaker. Reeve had a superb director in Donner. Cavill's Supe films have all been messy in one way or another.

LOL. The comments in the review I read had lots of people who said half the audience was cringing in fear, while half were laughing their heads off. I have to see this!

i'm hopefully catching it this weekend. very much looking forward to it. i think i've seen some rosemary's baby comparisons popping up on twitter, and i think that's a lot more exciting to me than another exorcist retread.

the green fog (2017) 4/5 guy maddin's 'interpretation' of hitchcock's vertigo, recreated through footage from old movies & tv.

wonderfully odd, naturally, as one would expect in something with guy maddin's name attached, but it's a bit more openly silly than you might expect, even goofy, but in a very endearing way.

some people may throw up their hands, perhaps find it a bit of a waste of time, but i thought it was a demented hoot & i absolutely loved it.

coco (2017) 4.5/5 beautiful animation, even by pixar standards, and the ending made me cry like a 4 year old who just dropped his ice cream cone.
