That was one creepy movie... "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Hey, hey Ace!
Actors/actresses for the Studio System era:
Dana Andrews: Dana Andrews career pretty much faded in movies by the mid 50's but it should have, what a shame. I don't recall every seeing Mr. Andrews in a movie (minus the drive-type movies, of the 50's) but this guy could pull of the man's man's yet had a subtlety to express fear and vulnerability. A vary measured actor who you never caught over acting or caught acting.
example: There's a scene in 1944 Otto Priminger film Laura.
Mr. Andrews ( Det. Lt. Mark McPherson) has fallen in love with Laura (actress Gene Tierney) from viewing a portrait in her apartment. Det. MacPherson is in her apartment because Laura was thought to have been murdered, but when she returns for a weekend trip everyone's shocked and more questions are raised who was killed and why...
In a scene Det. McPherson aksed Laura questions about where she'd been and about the woman who was killed in her apartment. Laura was also engaged to a work-shy Shelby Carpenter (Vincent Price), in fact she had left for the long weekend to decided if she and Shelby should marry.
When Det. McPerrson asked her if she has come to a decision about Shelby Carpenter... You/we can see Det. McPherson holding his breath hoping she had decided no to marry Carpenter. When she confirms the former... Mr. Andrews side profile shows him smiling and expressing a sign of relief all at once. If you watch that shot, you'll notice... though he's looking down at his note pad, Gene Tierney is looking straight at Andrew's, she can see what we see. Laura (Gene Tierney) only sees Det. McPherson(Andrews) looking down burning a hole in his notepad. That can't be taught and it wasn't written in the scene... damn! I'd recommend looking at his work
Elizabeth Taylor: A lot of people thought Taylor couldn't act, she was product of the melodrama (over-the-top) of the Golden Era of Hollywood movies Studio System or if she had been so fine, shouldn't have had a career in the first place. I'd beg to differ. Very very few child actors/actresses make the transition from child to adult actors, irrespective of looks. Ms. Taylor's career can be divided between before A Place In The Sun and after A Place In The Sun. Ms. Taylor admit before the she basically hit her mark in a scene, without giving much thought about her character or the plot of the movie. Meeting Monty Cliff changed all of that... In Raintree County Taylor plays a young woman who slowly slides into madness. To be honest Taylor's post Raintrree County moves are hits and misses but good acting can't necessarily save so-so scripts or lack of direction. I've become kinda obsessed with Taylor's latter films. Taylor took on unspoken taboo subjects. I think Taylor was really hitting her stride as an actress, but the roles dried up.
Currenlty and alive actor.
Brenda Blethyn; I've always admired actors who are chameleons. Biethyn can slide in and our of roles its only later you noticed its she who's playing the roles. Of late Ms. Blethyn been cast as someone mother but look at the different rolls: Clubland, A River Runs Through It, Pride & Prejudice, or War & Peace, Secretes and Lies Blethyn doesn't repeat herself or have trick she pulls out of her hat. I' recommend if you get a change go see her on stage. I'd recommend watching her TV work, Anne Frank: The Whole Story.
Tim Roth: Kinda reminds of Johnny depth, Mr. Roth doesn't appear to chase big budget box office movies. Started paying more attention of Roth's work after seeing "The Legend of 1900".

For Julia Roberts she got nominated for most of the movies she has starred in so for her it more than evens out. She did get nominated for the closer by the Critics choice movie awards and National board of reviews. So I really don't consider it a snob. | |
