Johnny Depp is a very underrated actor. I think sometimes people just associate him with the "weird, Johnny Depp-type roles" like Jack Sparrow and every character he plays in the Tim Burton movies but when he's not appearing in those kinds of movies he's capable of delivering some great performances. Another actor I think who gets overlooked is Tom Cruise. Because he seems to play the same character in all his action movies it's easy to forget about his performances in movies like Magnolia and Born on the Fourth of July. As he gets older, I bet we'll see more of his actor side and less of his action hero side. Also, and this one may be hard to wrap your head around, but hear me out. Another actor who is criminally underrated is Arnold Schwarzenegger. Think about it. Some of the stuff he did in Predator, Commando, True Lies etc would be totally unbelievable with any other actor in the role. But because its Arnie, you buy into it. You don't question it when he lifts a jeep off the ground and pushes it down a hill towards the soldiers he's about to kill. You just accept that it's possible because of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Not to mention his expert performance as the Terminator in two of the best sci-fi/action movies ever made. But if action is not your thing then he's got you covered as well. Since his stint as Governator he's put in some really understated performances in Maggie and Aftermath.

I agree Johnny Depp is an underated actor.

Tom Cruise......... well making scientology stories into movies does not interest me. Now he was good in Top Gun and some other movies............. and then one day he did that couch jumping on Oprah and from then on I have not gone to see another TC movie.

Arnie is a good actor.

It's partly because of his religion that Tom Cruise is overlooked, I think. Although he's never made a movie from a scientology story so I don't know what movie you're referring to. But just because he believes in some crazy stuff shouldn't detract from the quality of his movies or performances. After all, I wouldn't judge a Christian or Muslim actor's movies on their religion so I wouldn't judge Tom Cruise for his either.

I'd agree Cruise's close ties to his religion have had an impact. I can't name another A-List Actor who serves in basically the highest level of officaldom of his/her faith. But I think his couch jump and his divorce and custody issues being tabloid fodder for a decade have affected him as well.

Cruise might actually be an underrated actor. All The Right Moves, Risky Business, Rain Man, The Firm, Jerry Maguire, Magnolia, and even films like American Made. He's proven himself equally adept at comedy, action and drama. I don't pay to see his movies anymore but I respect the heck out of his talent.

I´m not a fan but I think he is very talented, disciplined and versatile, and he rarely stars in bad movies. But his personal antics including his activities for his religious organization, distract people from the actor Tom Cruise. I wonder how much of his discipline and work ethic stems from being in Scientology.

I usually enjoy watching his movies. The same goes for Michael Douglas. Maybe they just pick the right scripts.

I saw Basic Instinct when I was about 8 years old. I've loved Michael Douglas ever since. Great actor.

Yes, I think Buscemi's great there (and in so much else - In the Soup comes to mind, where the [perhaps] underrated Seymour Cassel steals the show!)!

Sydney Pollack. Terrific in Husbands and Wives (above) and Eyes Wide Shut. I saw Tootsie so long ago that I don't remember it, but I'm gonna assume he was his usual, underrated self there, too.

...And, while we're at it... The guy on the right in the pic above is also an incredibly underrated actor. And his performance in H&W is one of his best (IMHO).

I agree with that assessment (although I kind of liked Source Code). I think Jeffrey Wright is still waiting for that one role to come along that will really cement him as a great actor. Hopefully Westworld will be that role.

Willem Dafoe - just for his performance in those BT adverts

Joe Pesci - if only because he plays himself all the time

The entire League of Gentlemen cast, the acting crew of 3 geniuses.

Ally McBeal (Han Solo's wife)

Joe Pesci is possibly the most underrated actor ever. Leaving aside his great performances in Raging Bull, Goodfellas and Casino he's also shown that he's equally great in comedic roles. Home Alone will never be remembered for its performances and yet without Joe Pesci (and Daniel Stern) there's no movie there. And in the Lethal Weapon movies he plays what is essentially the opposite of the type of role he usually plays. And he does it brilliantly.

Ah yeah, I almost forgot Home Alone. But he's still an evil ass in that. I forget the Lethal Weapons. Was he 'camp' evil in that, as in annoying?

He's one of the best of his generation, but he dropped out of sight for almost 20 years now, with a few exceptions.

But he's coming back for Scorcese's The Irishman to star alongside De Niro and Pacino. Sometime in 2019.

I. Can't. Wait.

Martin Scorsese directing a movie starring Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci and Harvey Kietel. It CAN'T be as good as it sounds but it should still be worth watching.

It could be a highbrow version of The Expendables, or it could be the best film all of them have done in a generation. Either way, I'm watching.
