Another actor who is really underrated, underappreciated and downright underused in Hollywood is Timothy Olyphant. Now, even leaving aside that I'm very much in love with him and would definitely break off my engagement if he were to come calling, he is a great actor. Probably best known for starring in the TV shows Deadwood and Justified where he plays two different types of lawmen, both great, he deserves a chance to shine on a bigger scale. So far his only major movie roles are playing the title character in Hitman and the villain in Die Hard 4. He definitely deserves better than that. Tarantino called him one of the best actors on television during Justified's initial run so maybe he'll have his chance to show his stuff in one of QT's future movies but if not, at least we've got the Deadwood revival to look forward to. Now, I don’t know how to do it but if one of you would like to post a picture of Timothy Olyphant for me, preferably wearing a cowboy hat, I'd be very grateful.

I believe I've only seen him in Go and The Girl Next Door (in both of which, I recall him playing "creepy").

As for Tarantino, who knows what's gonna become of QT? They've just been hammering the guy lately (Weinstein "complicity", Uma Thurman, the Polanski defense on Stern...). He's made too much money for too many people for the 'Manson' flick not to happen, but the SJW's will be out in full force for him when it opens.

Quentin's gotten a little combative in the past when an interviewer presses him on a question he doesn't want to entertain (jump to 4:30 for the fireworks):

Even Ice-T? Never seen the show, but John Mulaney has a funny bit about the kind of lines they've given him.

Mariska Hargitay, OldFriends4Sale!:

lol yep, in that role and how he connects to the actors makes it work so well

Ice-T or Myers? confuse

I don't think either Depp or Cruise are underrated. Both are good actors, but Cruise has just one personage where Depp has two of them.

Cruise films are enjoyable if you manage to look besides his ego, while Depp movies are ok if you don't mind 'more of the same'. Depp surely didnt impress me in his more serious and deep roles than loads of other actors do.

i don't think they're are underrated either, really...but 'black mass' was certainly a bit of a departure for depp, and well-played. same for cruise in 'magnolia'...he went places with that roll that he hadn't been before and hasn't returned to since.

I'd seriously recommend Deadwood (which is basically The Sopranos but set in the old west) and Justified (a modern day Dirty Harry). Both are great shows and really show Timothy Olyphant at his very best.

Incidentally, both shows also feature great yet underrated actors. Ian McShane gives a truly powerhouse performance in Deadwood. Seriously, the show is worth watching for him alone. And I'd put Walton Goggins' performance in Justified up there with Jack Nicholson's Joker as a villain that you just want to cheer for.

Regarding the Tarantino thing, I think it's a bunch of fuss about nothing. By the time his new movie is coming out the press will have moved on to the next thing and nobody will care.

Quentin is actually a pretty good example. You don't think of him as an actor, but he usually does a pretty good job, even if he only acts in his own movies. And that cameo in Girl 6 was also very funny.

Johnny Depp is a very underrated actor. I think sometimes people just associate him with the "weird, Johnny Depp-type roles" like Jack Sparrow and every character he plays in the Tim Burton movies but when he's not appearing in those kinds of movies he's capable of delivering some great performances. Another actor I think who gets overlooked is Tom Cruise. Because he seems to play the same character in all his action movies it's easy to forget about his performances in movies like Magnolia and Born on the Fourth of July. As he gets older, I bet we'll see more of his actor side and less of his action hero side. Also, and this one may be hard to wrap your head around, but hear me out. Another actor who is criminally underrated is Arnold Schwarzenegger. Think about it. Some of the stuff he did in Predator, Commando, True Lies etc would be totally unbelievable with any other actor in the role. But because its Arnie, you buy into it. You don't question it when he lifts a jeep off the ground and pushes it down a hill towards the soldiers he's about to kill. You just accept that it's possible because of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Not to mention his expert performance as the Terminator in two of the best sci-fi/action movies ever made. But if action is not your thing then he's got you covered as well. Since his stint as Governator he's put in some really understated performances in Maggie and Aftermath.

I agree with you on Depp and Cruise, but not Schwarzenegger.

Depp and Cruise are very good actors and usually make good movies. True, they are both odd and I think the fame has gone to their heads, but both have contributed great performances over the years.

I think Ed Norton is very underrated. Wish he would come back as he's a terrific actor.

Edward Norton hasn't gone anywhere - he works pretty steadily. In fact, he is voicing one of the characters in the new Wes Anderson animated film, Isle of Dogs, which is due out this year.

It also boasts some pretty great cameos from Van Damme, Sharon Stone, Jim Belushi and Danny deVito as a cartoon cat. Yup, it's that kind of movie.

Have you seen Jean-Claude Van Johnson? falloff I haven't, but just the title makes me laugh! Or what about JVCD? I heard that was decent?

Both are really, really great. Full of self reflection, bitterness, sadness and much deeper than I ever expected from Jean Claude Van Damme.

You should really give at least JCVD a try. And if you like it I´m sure you´ll watch at least a couple of episodes of Jean Claude Van Johnson.

You've never seen an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie? Wow. You're missing out big time. Terminator 1 and 2 and Predator are among the best sci fi movies ever made. And Commando IS the best action movie of all time. But if you've made it this far without seeing one of his movies then I'm guessing you're not an action fan. No problem, because he was brilliant in Aftermath, which is a drama about a man coming to terms with the death of his family in a plane crash and how he deals with it when he finds the man responsible. Very unusual to see Arnie play a vulnerable old man in a movie and he really is great in it.

The thought of Arnold as an underrated actor is a bit hard to digest at first but it is not that far fetched, actually. Conan the Barbarian is one of my all-time favorite movies and Arnold is the perfect guy for that role, and I say that as someone who used to be a fan of the novels and Marvel Comics of Conan. Many think of Commando, Predator and Terminator when they think of Arnold, and those are great movies...but Conan the Barbarian is my favorite.

And yes , he was pretty good in Maggie, too.

I disagree about Commando being the greatest action movie though. That honor goes to Mad Max 2. That movie is an action masterpiece and flawless.

Mad Max 2 is great. No doubt about it. It even shares one of its villains with Commando. But where I think Commando beats it is with the sheer ludicrousness (I'm not sure that's a real word) of it. You've got this massive chunk of meat and muscle going up against what is essentially Freddie Mercury on steroids and for some reason it's a close fight. Not to mention the copious amount of classic one liners.

Hmm... I think it's a totally legitimate question. And I think Tarantino comes off as really defensive in refusing to answer.

An interview is not strictly 'a commercial' for your movie (that's what...you know...commercials [and trailers] are for). If the question was, say, "What do you think other filmmakers' greatest films are?", he'd answer it with relish.

Me thinks he can't justify putting all that violence out into the world (I say this, of course, as someone who's not wired to appreciate action films). I (like everyone else) enjoyed Pulp Fiction (and parts of Jackie Brown and Reservoir Dogs), but the violence just does nothing for me. shrug

The thing is though, he's answered that question before. Numerous times. And it's a bit insulting really to ask it in the first place because in asking him that question it insinuates that all his movies are just about the violence. There are some stories that can't be told properly WITHOUT showing a certain level of violence. Very rarely do you see QT putting in violence just for the sake of it. It's always there to get across a point he's trying to make like how fucked up in the head Mr. Blonde is when he chops off the cops ear in Reservoir Dogs or how badly black slaves were treated in America in Django Unchained. Sometimes it's shocking but its never without reason.

Supposedly Marlon Brando once told him he was too good an actor to do movies and that he should do more theatre work. Maybe he misunderstood and that's why he keeps doing those over the top performances in his movies.

Or maybe he would just rather earn 30 or 40 million for playing a pirate than earn 10 times less making a movie with more merit.

But I agree, he's definitely one of the most disappointing actors because you know he's got the talent to do something special but for one reason or another, he doesn't do it.

Agreed. I understand he gets tired of having to answer the same question over and over again.
I do think that Kill Bill 1 has a bit of violence for the sake of it, though.

It's basically a live action anime though. It's actually rather tame when compared to some of the stuff that goes on in those cartoons he was paying homage to.

If there's one movie he made that was violent just for the sake of being violent then I'd say that movie was Death Proof. In fact, aside from Kurt Russell and THAT car chase, that movie should never have been made at all.

...Or just say, 'I don't believe that violent films contribute to any actual violence. I grew up on them and I'm not running around killing people.' shrug

I'm sure there have been papers published on this subject? What's the consensus, non-biased folk?

I know he's answered it before. Which should have given him ample opportunity to sharpen his response.

I don't feel that it's an insulting question or that it insinuates that all of his movies are just about violence.

Are there stories that can't be told properly without showing a certain level of violence? Probably not. But I think "a certain level" is the key phrase here. In Match Point, for instance, graphic violence is never shown onscreen, but you know that it's been done and you're aware of the brutality of it.

Tarantino seems to have a graphic-violence fetish (and I have close friends who love his films, so I'm not necessarily going to pass judgment on that). He should just own it without getting so defensive (it makes one think, 'Why does this question rankle him so?'); like, 'I'm not the first purveyor of graphic violence in films and I probably won't be the last. I like these kinds of films and I'm not running around killing anybody. Studies have shown...' (if studies have shown).

He'll probably be fielding this question again, at some point, so why not have a better reply ready than, "I'm shutting your butt DOWN."?

...But I have a feeling he'll be more inundated with questions about Weinstein, Thurman and Polanski when he does the rounds for the next pic. Unless he decides not to do any promo personally, to avoid them.

But I doubt that. Quentin loves to talk and he loves the spotlight.
