i still have to catch up with a good number of 2017 releases, including quite a few on the op's list. the square is finally playing here and i'm hopefully catching it this weekend, but loveless, thelma & call me by your name haven't made there way to a local screen. i also missed faces places, bpm, quite a few others - so lots of holes still to be filled.

i don't really have any great opinion on how last year measured up against prior ones, but i definitely found a lot to watch & enjoy. i'm actually posting a top 13, as they were the movies that i rated the highest, felt were a significant cut above everything else i saw, & either watched multiple times or am looking forward to revisiting.

the top 8 are all more or less co-number 1s - i wouldn't say i really rated one of them hotly over another...thought they were all truly great.

I'd say my favorite films are Shape of Water and Get Out. Billboards and Lady Bird were good. On the comic book front, Wonder Woman and Logan were really good as well. I laughed more at Guardians of the Galaxy 2 than I did at any other movie this year.

And yes, I really liked The Last Jedi.

Remind me this scene please. I don't think it deserves a nomination for Best Picture. Is a good film, but not for being nominated.

I saw Raw (Grave) last night and wasn't that impresed with it. I guess it was overhyped to me because I expected an amazing movie. I found it was just like watching annoying or obnoxious people (or millenials) do things and the only person that came off as likeable was her roommate.
Even though it's a short movie by today's standards (99 minutes) I kept watchig the clock.

My best 10 films are in no order:

I actually really liked A Ghost Story as well.

i was really enjoying 'blade runner 2049' until harrison ford made his first appearance. he pulled me right out of the movie, ruining the whole tone. then i got to thinking about sequels, and the audacity of writing a sequel to someone else's renowned work...and ended up finding the whole thing rather distasteful.

no, i know that...he didn't write the novel that was the source of his original screen adaptation. philip k. dick was done with the story when he had it published. it had a beginning, middle and end. it should have been left well enough alone.

The novel is very different to the movie though. Had they abided by the "don't mess with another person's work" rule, we never would have gotten the first Blade Runner movie. And that movie is a classic. In fact, quite a few classic movies would never have been made including Psycho, The Shining and the Al Pacino version of Scarface. I agree with the sentiment that some stories don't need to be retold, the recent Ghostbusters movie is proof of that, but sometimes a movie or book will come out that has a great idea behind it but the execution doesn't match. In those circumstances, a remake or alternate take can work out.

right...i don't so much have a problem with adaptation, especially when the original creator grants consent (as pkd did for 'blade runner'). but to continue and capitalize on another creator's endeavor without their knowledge or consent just seems a little greasy to me. of course i'm not aware of whether or not dick signed over his rights, or if it was left open ended or what. but i would think he would not have wanted his story continued without his input...i wonder if his estate benefitted from '2049'...

i left toni erdmann & the salesman (on sexton's list) off because i thought they were both 2016 movies, but i'm pretty sure both were widely released in north america last year - certainly that's when i saw them. if i were to re-draft my list, both would definitely be in the mix, with the salesman near the top for sure.


and i just saw 'call me by your name,' and i think i would definitely have that slotted near the top as well, though i'd have to let it settle for a bit before i anchor myself to that position.

Finally saw "The Shape Of Water"... This was a great flick!
This replaces "The Square" on my list...
Also caught "Grave" last night after all the hype surrounding it and it was boring and plain lame shit...
It seems, for the last decade, French cinema has been on a downslope and even bordering on desperation... So sad...
