open up any magazine like details or maxim, and you will see that print advertising is now exploiting men as sex objects just as much as women... ( can anyone say abercrombie and fitch) soon it will catch up in other media. And there are those low budget commercials for jock itch, but its not a huge common occurance like a period...

Personally, I am a big fan of DEGRADING WOMEN. I wish we still had it around today, because it used to make me laugh so much back when it was popular. I think I liked Della Burke the best on that show but it went downhill when they put on that blonde woman who used to be on that stupid show with the Coneheads. I like how they were all from the South and got in crazy situations every week. I would like to start a DEGRADING WOMEN fanclub!!!

are you sure these are the best examples, i mean were you serious? when i think about women being degraded i think more about the # of women who are raped, murdered, beaten, ridiculed, taken for granted than about kotex.

Here is my thoughts on this!

As far as the feminine hygiene products... this is all bout making money, has nothing to do with degrading a woman. They have to advertise their product. I have seen the commercial for Blue Star Ointment many times and I woudnt consider that degrading a man. There are just some things that are part of life and womens menstrual cycles are just that... part of life.

As far as nudity? I think woman are shown nude more frequently because woman are sensaul creatures. Their bodies are viewed as beautiful where as I am not so sure how I would feel about seeing a mans "hootie hoo" staring at me when I am watching a movie except for the single fact of interest in size of the actor! Men's "hootie hoo's" are not the most attractive things to see especially in the heat of the moment, romantic love seen.

Women have been struggling to be equal to men. Women can live without men. Women have struggled for equality in areas of work, and voting. We still have a long way to go.

Okay, I think much of the media DOES degrade women. That having been said, I think you're really stretching it to say that feminine hygeine product ads are "degrading". Any company that makes an in-demand product (in this case, a product that 54% of the population might need), is going to advertise. They are going to try to make their product appear better than their competition's, so they advertise. I also see commercial's for hemmroid ointments, adult diapers, laxatives, jock itch/ athlete's foot remedies, birth control and post-menopausal drugs. These are all targeted to various groups who may have to deal these problems, so that said groups will buy the products that remedy them.

If you want to focus on the degradation of women, then look at more valid examples in the media. Most women need tampons, so commercials will always exist for them. How are those commercials any different than those for Viagra (which, in my opinion, address a much more embarrasing problem for a man than a period is for a woman)?

Interesting point and I agree to an extent. The responsibility IS upon the actors/actresses accepting the parts. However if the only roles available were degrading, actors would have no alternative other than to accept it if they wanted to work. For example, the actor Paul Robeson was an accomplished stage actor but the only roles that were offered to him back in the twenties , was that of a "savage" from the jungle. This stereotype was what white America wanted to see back then and if Black actors wanted to work, this was the only game in town so to speak.

In today's world, the questions have to be asked,"Are the roles offered today any different then the ones offered previously? Can I refuse these roles becuase there ARE other ones that "paint a better light?"

If the answer is yes, then actors can validly say that yes the roles offered to them are degrading.

It's really the fault of the evil white males out there.
