Biege box: basically a modified phone that you can easily connect to your neighbor's phone line. Disclaimer: Use of these devices can be illegal, and I don't advocate it. Heck, just get a cell phone with free long distance. Shouldn't work anymore, well not on a modern digital exchange anyway. Good old days! The pay phones around here are still the "classic" ones that should be susceptible to red boxing. Since everyone seems to have a cell phone these days, I doubt the phone company has much of an interest in upgrading them. In fact, I'm told that they're reducing the number of pay phone locations due to decreased demand. But as I said, since free long distance is part of any decent cell phone plan, red boxing seems pretty pointless in the 21st century, even if it can still be done in some locations. Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |

That's what I love about America... so much of the telecomms infrastructure is dated and in need of upgrading, it's a great place for phreaking. Of course in recenty years it is more fun (but more challenging) to abuse the cellular networks... | |
