Love Aubrey Plaza! 'Safety Not Guaranteed' has become one of the movies I test new friends with. Because we can't be real friends if you don't think the end of that movie is the absolute awesomeness. I love how that movie pays off in a way that you never saw coming. 5/5 for Safety Not Guaranteed. Also really like Mark Duplass. I was bummed that Togetherness wasn't picked up for a second season. Felt like it was just finding its legs towards the end there... but I guess that's for the TV thread.

A Dog's Purpose 2.5/5 I was disappointed, even after all the foolish that happened about this movie. I thought this would truly be from the dog's perspective, some of it was but it pretty much was about a bunch of depressed people and random throw-ins of the dog's perspective for a punchline. A dog's purpose, to help depressed people not feel so lonely in life.

yes... same with cats.

with the exception that dogs are sycophantic ass kissing, dirty, stupid bastards that only function well when being TOLD what to do.

(this doesn't apply to Wild/Feral dogs/wolves)

You are the only ass kissing, dirty stupid bastard here.

So.....you took offense at me calling dogs stupid, filthy and malleable. ...fine. but I'm not kissing anybody's ass....get ur facts right. If anything i stated and unpopular opinion (*more like observation) about dogs, and wasn't APPEASING anybody. ...so.....ass kissing myth :DEBUNKED! !!!!

KONG: Skull Island

Lots of fun and visually spectacular. Some plot points were clunky and it brushed up against the edge of cheesy a bit too much but I thought it was a delight. It reminds me of Pacific Rim a little in as much as you know what you're getting into beforehand, you can sort of roll with the less plausible parts and teh goofball characterizations. For a sort of "throwaway", "junk" sort of movie, it stayed with me for some reason and I found myself thinking about it a lot after I viewed it. I want to watch it again.

8/10

Dr. Strange

Not bad. Very VERY cool visual effects. Some of the exposition was rushed and clunkily delivered but the acting was sound, the direction was good and the pacing was on point for the most part. it was a nice diversion from the usual Marvel fare which has become to "fight centric" lately. If you smoke weed, smoke a LOT before watching it.

7.5/10

Memento 2000- Regarded by critics as classic and one of the greatest films of all time, i like it and enjoy it. but the plot is a little WTF! or perhaps i did not understand the film at all. The bottom line is that, ican't see why is regarded as such classic as it is.2/5

i love safety not guaranteed too, though i think i might have not passed your test - the first time i saw it, i believe i crinkled my nose a bit & said 'i'm not quite sure what i thought of that ending.'

but i've watched it a few more times since then, and i now think it's a perfect little gem of a movie that deserves to be discovered by lots of people.

queen of earth - 3/5 greatly resembles the other alex ross perry movie i watched recently (the color wheel) in that the film seems to take a lot of glee in showing people being mean and petty and rotten and childish. i didn't find this film quite as entertaining as the color wheel, but it did have a cruel, misanthropic bent that i generally enjoyed. a bit like early todd solondz in that way, maybe.

Great acting and a good-hearted charming “Oceans 7-11” from the same director of said Oceans 11 movies.

As I don’t think anyone can call any of Steven Soderbergh’s movies “amazing”, I don’t think anyone can call any of his movies as less than well-made and enjoyable. So it’s no coincidence that he was able to get a cast chock full of A-list actors.

I agree with both scores. But I will add that in my opinion, the way the Doctor was portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch was it’s main problem. The Doctor came off as too much of an unlikeable dick. I’m sure he meant him to be more Tony Stark, but couldn’t pull it off.

Other than Dunkirk, has anyone seen a movie worthy of a best picture Oscar nomination this year?

So far this year, i would say it’s been a pretty pedestrian movie year so far.

boy 4/5 michael jackson-loving boy is reunited with his no-good petty criminal father. taika waititi's 2012 film has the same loose, shambolic charm as as his hunt for the wilderpeople. it's perhaps not quite as satisfying and complete, but anyone who fell for hunt ought to like this just fine.

hopefully waititi's quirkiness will show up in thor, though my experience with dr strange makes me suspect marvel will tamp down any real eccentricities in order to straightjacket the film into their template.

You have a despicable brain. Maybe you ARE the guy from Memento and couldn't understand the film without 3 minute pauses and a legal pad.

Say something more relevant, not just a blatant character judgment. U know little about me. Anyways. ....yeah MEMENTO is straight forward once you get to the end.

You either need to drink more, or less when going to the movies.

I don't know which.

But it seems all of America agrees with me on this.

Hollywood is counting on fall and winter to correct the downturn.

It's official — the summer box office in North America wilted.

Revenue plummeted 14.6 percent to $3.83 billion, tying with summer 2014 to mark the worst year-over-year decline in modern history, according to final numbers released Tuesaday by comScore. When adjusting for inflation, it's even worse.

To boot, it is the first time since 2006 that overall revenue didn't reach $4 billion.

The downturn in attendance was even more alarming. Roughly 430 million consumers went to the movies between May 5 and Labor Day, by far the worst showing in at least 25 years.

Heading into summer, the domestic box office was running comfortably ahead of 2016. Now, it is down more than 6 percent from the same time period last year.

The international box office, which is up nearly 4 percent year to date, continues to offer some solace, although most of the growth is thanks to China.

In North America, more summer tenptoles than not underwhelmed. All-out bombs included King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Lights, while titles such as Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and Transformers 5 came in well behind previous installments in their respective franchises. Live-action comedies were another major sore spot, save for Malcolm D. Lee's Girls Trip, which is the top-performing R-rated comedy in more than a year with north of $112 million domestically.

carnival of souls (1962) 3/5 a woman has bizarre visions after a near-death experience. the ending won't shock anyone, but this bare-bones no-budget horror film pulls off a reasonably bizarre, fairly creepy atmosphere. certainly worth a look for horror fans who want to dig into early prototypes.

IT - 2017

I have got to admit I've never read the book. I've read THE STAND, THE SHINING, (started and didn't complete) THE TOMMYKNOCKERS, CARRIE, CUJO, CHRISTINE....but that's it.

Gotta say, I've only r really enjoyed THE STAND

Anyways, i mention that because I'm familiar with the TV mini series with Harry, Olivia, Joh, Tim and those other folks. THIS film was not immediately likeable and some of the characters (*notably the clown and jokester, Harry) dont seem engaging. The clown PERSONA is VERY weak imho, but the effects barrages give him greater character than the actor merits. Whether Victorian or not, he doesn't convince me as someone well versed in CLOWNING and his "seduction" of the first child seems truly willless and tactless, much worse is his "dancing" scene.

Saw it opening Night. The crowd seemed to LOVE it....the scares werent as dismally cheap and retarded as Rob Zombie remakes so it has that crud beat.

So, again i begin with the bad. Oh yes, the NKOTB music cues CHEAPEN THE NARRATIVE, but the rest of the film is really engaging, i can see (old people) relating to it....as the friendships created are very strong, however it can't make up if its in 1988 or 1948---- the racism is avoided toward the black kid, but he ALSO races (*ON BIKE!) the meat from his family farm.....what gives??

1988 or 1948?

Anyways it was really pretty enjoyable, despite the fact that kids are f-ing around before their time and already stupid on drugs before even hitting senior year of high school these days.....the while film will seem like a fable to kids this age, but if you have concerns that theyd ruined one of your favorite horror films, dont fret. It's really not that bad at all. A low 3/4 stars.3 of 4

Will be enjoyable to adults familiar with the work.

I wouldn't exactly call it scary though. Pennywise from Tim Curry was more credible. This one is just a creature. Not as demented or creepy as some of the people on this forum. THIS clown only feeds, he doesn't seem to ENJOY terrorizing the kids much. Nothing really struck me as an "oh wow!; THAT was really clever! " So, just view it as entertainment

5/10

Not for me. I was bored. The kids were great, and acting by them solid. The direction was TV show bland and the story just as bland.

Not a terrible movie and not a great movie. Made tons of money this opening weekend so we should expect more of these.

Saw the much hyped "It" and it felt not scary, not very remarkable, and kind of following the cliche's. There's a sequence in the garage that was edited just like a cliche trailer with dropouts to black (explained by a crazy slide projector). Seriously... every moment that was supposed to be scary... was kind of fun almost like watching trailer moments or creature design demos... but it never felt like it worked to me. Maybe it's because I've seen both versions of "Mama" by this filmmaker and everything that influenced him, so it all seems like presets on a keyboard.

The huge interest and popularity makes me think audiences want to feel comfortable in their horror movies, not disturbed in any real way (mainstream reaction to "The Witch" also fills me with dismay).

I swear, the moments of drama between the characters in "It", the moments of their character challenges, were quite laughably cliche, even with a tired montage of them swimming and playing with cheesy child life wonder score. None of that worked for me an the least bit. It doesn't compare to the moments created in "Stand By Me" or "Shawshank Redemption", and certainly doesn't do anything new for horror the way "The Shining" did. All those I listed are Stephen King adaptations. But then again, I read Stephen King avidly back in the 80's and never felt "It" was a strong work. It just doesn't come together in a convincing way as a novel, and the movie much less so. The score was really heavy handed and very obvious in trying to evoke emotion or grandure or Spielbergian air... and it projects every scare in a way that completely neuters them for me like someone on your shoulder saying "you need to be scared now... you need to be scared now!"

On the upside, the casting is fantastic, and all the young actors are great, as is their comedic banter. The look of the film is great too.

There is a sequence a little past the halfway point, where a bully encounters IT and that moment did work well. I almost felt as if a different director had taken over. This scene didn't feel rushed and built up a mood. I wish more of the movie had done that in a convincing way.

Christine (2016)

Based on real life events, Rebecca Hall gives an Oscar-worthy performance as the talented, tormented Chrstine Chubbuck, an ambitious and talented TV investigative reporter in the early 1970's. The entire cast hit all the right notes, especially Michael C. Hall, Maria Dizzia and Tracy Letts. The film stumbled in the last act, but still a worthwhile watch.

I hear ya.

the dancing clown scene was laughably bad (in a bad way) The CGI was ridiculous and the clown never came off as evil or much less sentient. The whole little "let's give him a dead eye that rolls off" thing was alright...but it just reminded me of my old guitarist.

He didn't seem to plausibly enjoy scaring kids or people, and he didn't do anything in a malevolent way.

I don't think his acting lent much to it, and later that evening I hurriedly (FF handy) watched the TV series again, and realized he'd taken a lot of the gruff voice from Tim Curry. But wouldn't a Victorian clown have some sort of ties to his own era? Even IF its an interdimensional clown/creature.... it's mannerisms would be befitting of a different era.

Haven't read the book, so I don't know how far off they could have veered to make him a more undermining evil. It was alright. I rated a low 3/4 (See if you're curious, it's not THAT bad)

I still think the mini series did far better character development. The only things better in 2017 were the effects... best being contortionist clown mocking the kid's broken arm by coming out of that fridge.... that one worked wonders that the actor himself didn't really do.

and going further to implicate the gals father as a creep really helped here.
