Per Count Olaf's letter:

“To my horror, Netflix has funnelled their ill-gotten gains towards a second season of this unhappy and unnerving series.

“Even as we speak, set builders, costume designers and trauma specialists are snapping into action, the better to bring you even more upsetting episodes, all because of your reputed enthusiasm for this grim example of so-called family programming.”

The second season is laid out to be 10 episodes for the next five books and the third season would be the rest of it.

Neil Patrick Harris, who plays the villain, is keen to see the story through until its end.

He said: “It was one of the things I was bummed about with the movie is that it only got to follow the Baudelaires up to a certain point.”

Season two might also reveal who the mysterious Jacquelyn is. The character is one of several that do not appear in the original novels.
