I think the truth is the lack of money is extremely stressful. I think having at least some money to fall back on means less anxiety, panic, overthinking choices, worrying. Imagine having to get someplace and your vehicle won't start, or you don't have a vehicle. Imagine that you absolutely need to get where you are going. If you have less than $50.00 in your pocket or on your debit it becomes a big deal. It is less money for other things that you might need until your next direct deposit.

If you have a decent amount of money you call a cab, or whatever and simply stress less.

The level of stress that you go through regularly when you are dirt poor makes having some money feel like "happiness".

All true. And nothing worse than constant stress. Easy to see how peopl turn to drugs or alcohol.

But if you can afford drugs and alcohol, then you have enough money to spend on things you need instead of pissing it all away. I have no sympathy for these people who claim to be broke and yet they're constantly drunk or high.

Obviously you've never been under that kind of stress. Which is good. You're blessed.
But it's not even a poor or wealthy issue, you can have a great job and family and all the possible things that life throws at you and barely be making it. Making sacrifices and still not make ends meet. Stress causes all types of problems and caused by money and pain and so many more things that i can type away forever.
So don't be so quick to judge. Just be glad you've been strong enough.

You may see me tonight with an illegal smile.

It don't cost very much but it lasts a long while.

Won't you please tell the man, I didn't kill anyone.

I'm just trying to have me some fun.

people can find a way to get that high even in the most desperate circumstances. i feel very, very sorry for people who go through such things. they have very difficult lives. there are endless discussions to be had on responsibilty & how they can be helped & how they can help themselves, but one thing i absolutely think is true is that fundamentally those people are extremely unlucky.

They say that money buys you happiness, the more money the more happiness up until $70,000 per person.

And that more than $70,000 doesn't make you any happier.

It does, though.

i don't want to make blanket statements on such a matter, but most of the studies do seem to show that once you get to that level of 70-75k, there's fairly diminishing returns in happiness & life satisfaction from income. people are different, that may not be the case for you, but it does generally seem to be the case for most.

.

and the pleasure people often get from the purchases they make once they get to that level are very fleeting - the ephemeral hedonic treadmill, as they say.

.

i've been very influenced by the writing of peter singer & will macaskill, and i absolutely believe that once you've achieved that level of success, and don't have to face the grinding worries of rent & making budgets & so on, the best thing you can do for your mental state is to give charitably. not only because it's a worthwhile thing to do, but because it really does give your life a genuine purpose. i hope this doesn't sound like a douchey thing to say, but i don't think there's anything grander most people can do with their lives than to help people who need it. be nice to people when you don't have to be nice. that's likelier to make you happier than anything else.

My mother died 3 years ago from drink and drugs at the ripe old age of 42. We were what can only be described as broke but she found the money to feed her habits. Now, I'm not MEGA rich but I live very comfortably and if I can come from that background and reach the level I'm at now, then anybody can. I'm not special. I just don't reach for the bottle when things don't go my way. There's always another way.

Aren't you a model of some kind?

I think you probably are special.

Well that's nice of you to say but even though I did some modelling when I was 19, I would never say it's my main profession. My point is that at a base level, I'm no better than anybody else so I don't agree with the notion that coming from a poor background means you should give up and turn to drink and drugs when times are tough. I think people from poorer backgrounds often use their history as an excuse rather than a legitimate reason. Obviously, I'm referring to Ireland here. I understand that in other countries, like the U.S, things can be harder for certain people and because of your skin colour or religion or whatever, certain opportunities are harder to come by but even in those situations, I still believe that turning to self destruction is admitting defeat and giving up on life instead of trying again to do better.

And hard to see why so many wealthy people turn to drugs or alcohol. They have sooo many other options to make themselves feel good, why bother with mind-altering substances?
