Does money make you happy?

I know the obvious answer is yes and that's what I would say as well but, my father and I are estranged and have been for thirty years and about fifteen years ago he came into a lot of money (million or so - not exactly sure of the amount) and when I look him up- the only pictures I find are him looking sad, worn out, miserable. And I would think he would be giddy. confused What do you think?

Seriously though, I can relate in a way because my parents got a pretty big windfall in an inheritance about 10 years ago. And they do NOTHING fun as a result. My old man does exactly what he always did before - sit around watching the news, grumbling about everything wrong with the world, and essentially finding joy in nothing!

.

But when he wants a new car, he has the money to just go out and buy it in cash (which he does about twice a year!).

.

So in all honesty I think it probably has the POTENTIAL to make you happier (at least) - IF you use it well. But inherently, no I don't think it does the job on it's own!

Prince said it best: They say that money doesn't buy you happiness - but it'll pay for the search.

I think that, my dad always thought when he got that money that he would be happy and I think he's just an unhappy man so it didn't make a difference. So, it's sad sad

Maybe he's unhappy because he misses you.

I don't know your backstory and I do not want to get in your business. What I will say, as a person whose parents have both been dead for 15 years now, is that if there's any way to get back together then I hope that can happen for you.

pray and hug

Anyway, to answer your question:

Money can keep certain types of sadness away (the stress of bills, food, shelter). That can contribute to happiness but it won't cause happiness.

Loving yourself and loving others is what causes happiness. Money is not required for that!

No, that is not the saying. The correct quote (from the Bible) is, "For the love of money is the root of all evil." Said love being evil because it lures people away from God's teachings. (That's Timothy saying that - not me.)

Twenty years ago 60 Minutes did and expose about the very dysfunctional Gucci family. Morely Safer asked one family member money didn't appear to be bringing them much happiness.

Her reply...

"I could be poor and cry while riding a bicycle or I could be rich cry while riding in the back of a Rolls Royce. I'd rather be rich and do my crying in the back of a Rolls."

That is so sweet Rodeshroe --- thank you so much. I actually do think he misses me sad And I miss him - he's 70 now so my heart is breaking. But I can't talk to him because his wife won't allow him to talk to me. I posted about it on the org last year but I can't find the thread. A lot of orgers helped me though and I appreciate it hug hug He's married to this controlling woman and she has isolated him from everyone in his family. He has no contact with anyone because he's not allowed. I can't even get a phone call in- I've tried. Finally, I gave up and I just wrote a book about it and I can only hope he one days comes across it and reads it - although not sure if he can without her knowing about it. Anyway, that was my last ditch effort to get a message to him and tell him I love him. sad Thank you for caring- Rodeshroe smile smile

It depends on individual circumstances but from a personal standpoint, I'm a lot happier now that I have money than I used to be when I was broke. Maybe it's BECAUSE I used to have nothing that I appreciate it more now that I have it?

I believe it was Aristotle who said wealth was a required element true happiness/contentment as without it there would always be some nagging worry about it.

No, but having food, shelter, and clothing makes me happy. And I can't do that without money, unfortunately...

Having true friends, being healthy and doing what you love doing can make you truly happy BUT while money alone won´t make you happy, having to worry about money all the time can make you feel very miserable.

Also, having a lot of money can help you improve your lifestyle, give you better housing, allow you to live elsewhere if your current location is making you unhappy, and it can even buy you freedom, to some extent.

So, yes, money can make some people very happy, depending on what you do with it and what kind of person you are.

Jay Leno once said that he´s been poor and he´s been wealthy, and that being wealthy was definitely better and made him happier.

The thing is, it isn't being wealthy that makes one happy, it's having just enough to not have to worry about basic life necessities.

True, but....having tons of money would allow me to spend much more time with friends who live overseas, or spend more time and even own property in countries where I´d love to live, or buy a big house with another house right next to it where friends or family members could live, etc. etc.

All these factors would definitely increase my happiness.

It certainly makes life easier but I've always been glad I'm not one of those people who obsess over it. You can be happy without it. I guess if you're an unhappy person who comes into money- you'll still be an unhappy person.

Qué pregunta tan tonta, por supuesto que el dinero te hace feliz, te da un poco más de libertad para hacer aquello a lo que tu corazón está más inclinado.
