La La Land - opinions? ...OK, just back from seeing it...wanted to chat about it. It was....good, magnificent, no doubt about it.... but there were catches as well....it was...how do I put this.....exactly as I expected - and I have no idea what that means....! (all I knew before I went to the hall was pretty much that it was a "musical"...)
....and throughout it all, I just kept on and on thinking about our very own EmmaMcG (not the least reason of which is because, of course, it's another Emma - Emma Stone in the lead!
...OK, so the concept was great, but really not that creative of an idea, especially if you've seen (and are a fan of) old time musicals, and it's been done again in recent times in "Into the Woods". I found the lyrics simplistic, and you could almost guess what the next line of the song would be, if you were havin a little fun..... very similarly to old time musicals, in fact...
The beginning scene was so highly reminiscent of the REM video for "Everybody Hurts" - it's just like, a continuation of that video, know what I mean? - which, btw, is getting to be almost a quarter century old, God bless the grey hairs in my head...
...and very strangely - No Happy Ending!! Now THAT'S unusual....?!!! The whole thing had a little too much Reality for me - from the moment his sister tells him about insurance, I kind of switched off a little... I would have preferred a sweeter note to end on....
...but leaving all that aside - it's the central story that I doubt - are there any people in Hollywood (or wherever this is) who WILL give up cash to follow their principles, and OPEN their damn jazz club?? My gut instinct is: TOTAL NONSENSE. I've never been to America, but I *have* spent time in another Western country, and.....not ONE FUCKING MF!! ...if any Americans wanna refute me, I'd be happy to hear you out.
...so that's my opinion.

I haven't seen it but from the brief synopsis I've read online, I'd say my life is totally different. For one, I never met Ryan Gosling. But on the other hand, I don't struggle to make ends meet. I'm quite wealthy  Regarding whether people would turn down money to follow their principles, I kind of done that. In a way. I suppose it would depend on HOW MUCH money we're talking about. I'm not ashamed to say that certain artistic principles would go out the window if there was millions of euro/dollars/pounds on the table. | |

..Also, the point of whether a drum machine is "crass commercialism" is Debatable, I think - I imagine a board full of PRINCE fans would have a lot to say about this (I've talked before about that Musicology Jay Leno where he talks about "real music" not being done "by a bunch of computer programmers", although Prince is no stranger to electronics - as anyone who's seen Graffiti Bridge and heard Diamonds and Pearls will know...)

I turned down something that wouldn't have been a guarantee but COULD have been a successful venture because it meant I'd have to do a lot of travelling. Which wasn't feasible at the time because I was 3 months pregnant. I was assured there was ways to work around it but I didn't feel it was worth the risk. | |

That's the interview he did when Mel Gibson was beside him, yeah? I remember that. Though in truth, I really just remember Mel Gibson... I do like Mad Mel. But anyway, there's nothing wrong with drum machines. They're just another form of musical instrument that requires a different set of skills to master. | |

Yet, Prince spoke often about the importance of musicianship. I think Prince and Valerie Simpson shared the same philosophy, learn... master your craft then "break" the rules. | |

Its well made and despite Emma Stone being in it, it is well acted but it's not really my type of movie. I liked it, but I'd never watch it again. | |

Maybe it's the god awful Spider-Man movies she was in but something about her just doesn't sit right with me. Mind you, she was good in Birdman. | |
