I've been told that it shows a lack of class and to those people I say "y'all can kiss my ass!"

I swear for emphasis and clarity. I don't swear just to swear. I did when I was 12 but...it was funny then.

As someone who curses, no it doesn't offend me. I try not to be a sailor about it but I definitely do. As a dance instructor and spin instructor I wish I could play more songs with swearing in it. Those are typically the best ones and I can't always find edited versions.

Depends on context. I am not easily offended in general. I can hold my own in a sweardown, and I'm unintimidated by people who say swearing indicates a lack of language skills. My language skills are just fine. There are just times when an emphatic MOTHERFUCKER is called for.

I don't generally cuss in public or around old people or kids because I'm old and southern, and it's pretty much coded into our DNA to avoid it.

Me personally, no I don't get offended ... not at all.

But there's no way in hell I'd want my young kids or elderly parents hearing profanity in public, and they shouldn't be forced to hear it.

One of the saddest things is seeing a young child use profanities that they heard and were repeating.

Yeah I think I know what you mean. For many people, cursing is used like a crutch because they can't think of anything better to say. Like the worn out phrases "F-you" and "F-off" which always makes me think, "That's all you got?" lol

I think it's rather stupid the way some words are supposedly more offensive than others.

How is the D word any different than the C word? Other than it being a nickname for some guys named Richard. lol

Nah. I understand finding cursing distasteful and offensive. It's enough to say, "I don't like..." whatever without assigning value based on those personal beliefs. I think it's lazy and pretty lame to just be all, "people who cuss are stoopit and don't know better words." The irony is that you've just made yourself look lazy and incapable of thinking beyond the visceral. No, it's just a weak passive aggressive dig with no substance which seems to be the basis of complaints about people who swear.

Or maybe I don't have strong feelings either way and am procrastinating at work.

I'm not offended at all by profanity which is culturally determined. There's nothing inherently
"profane" about words either.

I studied at a Jesuit seminary and as a Black American (heterodoxical) Christian, I was as-
tonished by all the swearing the fathers did as professors and men of the cloth. I discovered
that the level of offensiveness regarding swearing/curse words is, like I said, an extension
of your cultural background for the most part. If I went to Howard University's seminary,
or any other Black Christian seminary, professors who cursed would not be tolerated and
the level of their faith questioned.

My mom, who attended Duke University's seminary was likewise shocked when Stanley
Hauerwas cursed during a prayer in class. She now curses, but not as often as those fucking
crazy Jesuits at BC!

I believe that, just as with every other word in language, swear words should be used when and where appropriate. I work in a school and so virtually every word that might be offensive in any way is considered off limits. But this is like pretending the words can never be used constructively which, of course, they can. Does make me laugh though when staff curse like anything in the staffroom and then give a kid a complete dressing down for saying 'prick' (or insert any other expletive you like). Hypocrisy at its best (and, I have to confess, I've done this many times myself).

See that's not hypocrisy, it's being respectful of others in certain settings that have established and expected levels of behavior. A classroom is a setting where nobody should be swearing, whether it be students or staff. If staff members were cursing during class, THEN it would be hypocritical. In the privacy of the staff lounge, perfectly fine.

In classroom settings smoking, drinking and sex aren't allowed either ... doesn't mean teachers can't do those things outside of class. wink
