http://furkids.org/blog/october-is-black-cat-awareness-month

October is Black Cat Awareness Month

At Furkids, it is painfully obvious which cats are overlooked at our shelter by adopters. Though likely unintentional, black cats are overlooked again and again by adopters across the country.

Pictured left are Louie and Zorro. They are best buds and have been living the shelter life for far too long! They have patiently waited for the purrrfect human to give them the loving home they deserve for almost SIX years! They have to watch while other cats go home, and they don't understand why they aren't selected. Help them by fighting this black stigma and apply to adopt them today or champion them to your friends, family and colleagues through sharing on e-mail and social media!

Furkids currently has over 180 cats and kittens that are primarily black available for adoption!!! This is 1/3 of our cats available for adoption. Browse available black cats by visiting our adoptable page and typing “black” in the search field.

There is no logical reason for this epidemic in shelters across the country, commonly referred to as black cat or black dog syndrome, but there are various reasons we have noticed over time.

Black pets don’t photograph as well as animals with light colored coats. Since many of our adopters find pets online, we believe that part of this issue stems from online photos.

In Britain and Japan, having a black cat cross your path is considered good luck! Unfortunately, in the U.S. many people associate black cats with witches, Halloween and other negative superstitions that are far from reality. In fact, black cats often suffer cruelty and harm during Halloween season. We recommend keeping all cats indoors to protect them from weather, wild animals and cruelty.

This issue doesn't apply to only solid black cats. Tuxedo cats, cats with a white chest and sometimes paws, are equally hard to place.

You can help now!

1. Adopt a black or tuxedo cat
2. Donate toward their care
[add_to_cart item="Donate to the shelter" quantity="user:1" ]
3. Share this post on Facebook, Twitter and social media sites
4. Visit our adoptable cat page and pick one black cat to share on your social media pages

TOP TEN REASONS TO ADOPT A BLACK CAT

10. You’ll save money on their Halloween costumes
9. You can always find them in the snow
8. Holding a black cat is very slimming
7. Black cats will match any decor
6. A lint brush isn’t required for a black-tie affair
5. When you love a black cat luck is on your side
4. Black cats are like onyx—a beautiful gem.
3. They don’t care what color you are!
2. Research suggests black cats are friendlier

And the number 1 reason:

They are the least likely to be adopted.

Happy Black Cat Day! Why you should adopt a black cat

Happy hump day, friends! Today I’m talking about a subject close to my heart – cats!

National Black Cat Day is actually tomorrow – 30 October. It’s a celebration of black and monochrome cats which was started to raise awareness of the fact that, in rescue centres, black and monochrome cats are sadly overlooked and left without loving homes in favour of other colours of cats. They’re less than half as likely to be adopted as other cats – and when you consider that rescue centres are currently overflowing with kittens, black cats are even worse off.

In 2010, I adopted Marty and Milo with my now husband. They were black and white (tuxedo) kittens and I knew I wanted black and white cats, and wanted to experience having kittens, even though there are so many older cats that need homes. Marty tragically died suddenly in December last year, and this summer, we adopted two kittens to keep his brother company (and bring some light and fun back into our lives!).

So, what can you do to help?

Consider adopting a black or monochrome cat

Or even go to a shelter and ask to see the animal who’s been there the longest. Chances are they deserve a loving home too, even if they’ve been overlooked for a long time.

Donate to a cat rescue organisation

How about Cats Protection, or Cats Nottingham Rescue, who we adopted our kittens from? They’re an independent rescue centre run by volunteers who simply love and want to help cats. They completely rely on donations of money and food to help them operate, so please consider donating.

Get your pet neutered or spayed

This is SO so important. There is absolutely no reason not to get your pets neutered or spayed. The current crisis that animal rescue centres are facing, which has led to some even turning cats and kittens away, is entirely a result of careless or ignorant people failing to ensure that their cats don’t have or father kittens. Cats can get pregnant from 4 months old, even though they’re still so teeny tiny! They shouldn’t be going outside at that age anyway, and can be spayed or neutered promptly at 6 months old.

Do you have cats?

I don't think that is an issue lol
They are trying to raise awereness that because of people unacknowledged and upfront superstitions that black furred cat's are generally passed over. The last to get adopted etc

Of course people who care for pets/cats and try to make sure ferile and domesticated cats are neutered/spay, have certain shots to protect them from certain illnesses will try to get the right cats in the right homes. All of them.

Foster

Open Your Heart & Home to a Cat in Need

Foster Volunteers are the heart and soul of Black Cat Rescue. All of our rescued cats and kittens are cared for in foster homes throughout Massachusetts. Black Cat Rescue does not have a physical animal shelter, so we can only take in a homeless cat when we have a foster home ready to provide temporary care. You can directly save cats’ lives by fostering.

As a Black Cat Rescue Foster Volunteer, you will care for a homeless cat or litter of kittens in your home until the cat is adopted. Foster Volunteers are responsible for providing a safe and loving home, food, and fresh water for foster cats. Veterinary care is provided by Black Cat Rescue. Our foster terms generally range from several weeks to several months with the average being around three months. Potential adopters will meet cats available for adoption in your home. It’s wonderful for adopters to have the opportunity to view our cats in a home environment.

Our Foster Care Coordinator will work with you to ensure a successful foster experience. Get started now by completing a Foster Volunteer Profile.

We can’t save lives without you!

Adopt a Black Pet On Black Friday

facebook twitter Share on Google+

When people hear the words “Black Friday” they generally think of the day following Thanksgiving and the kick off for the holiday shopping season. This is the day many retailers begin to “turn a profit” or are “in the black.” This year, we are hoping people will think of black in an entirely new way: by adopting a black pet!

Update 12/4/12 – Prince has been adopted!

Black pets tend to have a more difficult time being adopted which means they are more likely to be killed in shelters. Also known as black cat or black dog syndrome, we can speculate a few reasons they may be overlooked:

  • Black pets are harder to see, especially in kennels. Even worse, if the pet is shy they likely won’t approach the front of the kennel, increasing their chances of going un-noticed by potential adopters.
  • Black pets are labeled as “too ordinary” when in fact, they are anything but! Finding a pure-black pet is rare.
  • Superstition is often associated with black pets, notably black cats. During the dark ages groups sought out to completely eradicate black cats which were associated with witch craft because of their nocturnal habits. They are in fact century-old survivors and should be celebrated!

Black dogs come in all shapes and sizes!

You can help combat the stigmas surrounding black pets by trying one or all of the following tips:

  • Use your photography skills! Better photos can be had by using proper lighting and colorful props. Take dogs on a rigorous walk prior to a photo session, when they pant it will look like they are smiling! Showcase those beautiful eyes by drawing the pets gaze up before snapping a photo. Showing the white of the eye will enhance a black pet’s appearance.
  • Take black pets out of their cages to meet potential adopters. This will teach adopters to judge a pet by the content of their character, not by the color of their fur!
  • Add a pop of color to a black pet. Neon-colored collars can draw attention to a previously less-noticed black pet. A scarf or bandana calling out for adoption can help as well. The brighter the better! Just make sure the pet is comfortable and safe in their new wardrobe.
  • Hold an event to showcase black pets! In Los Angeles, The Pet Care Foundation/Pets 90210 holds an annual event called “Basic Black” which showcases primarily black cats and dogs. This year the event will offer 50% reduced adoption fees at all six Los Angeles City Shelter locations on Saturday, November 24 and Sunday, November 25. You can see all the black pets up for adoption by visiting Our Adopt a Pet page.
  • Create your own local event to draw attention to black pets in your shelter or rescue!
  • Celebrate existing “holidays” like National Black Cat Day. This year National Black Cat Day is on Saturday, November 17. See what people in your community are doing to celebrate!

So this year on Black Friday get the deal of a lifetime by saving the life of a black pet!

Black Cat Superstitions and Their Origins

Black cats have played a major role in superstitions, folklore and mythology for centuries. In the Middle Ages, black cats were believed to be witches' familiars, and many even believed that black cats were reincarnated witches or messengers of witches or demons. The association of black cats with witches has become so ingrained in our culture that they've become synonymous with Halloween.

Cats and witchcraft

The cat wasn't associated with witchcraft until sometime in the 16th century. A popular British legend claims that in the 1560's, a father and son were frightened by a small creature darting across their path on a moonless night. After throwing stones after the creature, they saw that it was an injured black cat dart out of a crawl space and into the home of a woman suspected to be a witch. When the father and son saw the woman on the street the next day, the woman walked with a limp and had a bruised and bandaged face and arm. From that day on, all black cats were suspected of being witches, and apparently, the legend held. This notion of witches transforming themselves into black cats became a mainstay of belief during the Salem witch hunts in America.

Harbingers of bad luck and good fortune

Interestingly, the folklore surrounding black cats varies from culture to culture. In Britain and Japan, having a black cat cross your path is considered good luck; in the United States and several European countries, having a black cat walk by is considered bad luck. It even seems to matter from which direction the black cat comes from: In Germany, some believe that black cats crossing a person's path from right to left is a bad omen, but from left to right brings good luck.Black cats are said to bring good luck to sailors, whereas most gamblers believe that when a black cat crosses a player's path, they should not go to the casino.Other black cat superstitions include the belief that having a black cat turn his back on your brings bad luck, while having a black cat greet you at the door brings good luck. Meeting a black cat early in the morning is said to bring bad luck, but meeting three black cats in succession is said to bring good fortune.Thankfully, despite all of these superstitions, black cats have a large, loyal following of people who appreciate these sleek, gorgeous creatures in all their beauty.
