HBO To Launch Standalone Streaming Service Next Year

HBO is cutting the cord.

The company announced on Wednesday that it will launch a standalone streaming video service in the U.S. that will allow you to watch HBO programming without paying for an expensive cable subscription.

"It is time to remove all barriers to those who want HBO," Richard Plepler, HBO's CEO, said at an investor conference in New York on Wednesday, adding that it will be "transformative" for the company.

A lot of details remain unclear at this point -- how much will the service cost? Will it simply be HBO GO sold as a standalone product, or a slimmed down version with only some of the programming? Plepler acknowledged as much in his presentation, but said that for "competitive reasons," he won't be able to answer questions today.

An HBO spokesman would not comment beyond Plepler's presentation.

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

But don't you have to have an internet connection to stream? You still have to pay for the internet.

I pay for the internet anyway and happily so. I gave up on tv years ago. Thanks to the internet, Netflix, Amazon Prime and smart phones. I watch what I want, when I want, where I want and for how long I want.

Great News Indeed!

This is the beginning of the end of cable as we know it. The new service will certainly be up and running b4 the new season of GOT, if not sooner. Expect Showtme to follow suit, probably within six months.

It couldn't happen to a bigger ripoff of an industry, forcing their customers to pay for dozens of channels they consider worthless to watch just a handful. I cut the cord because of this wildly unfair practice two years ago, best money saving move I ever made. I no longer had any interest in supporting so many worthless channels through cable welfare.

I wouldn't be surprised if this now leads to cable finally offering channels individually instead of bundling. Some channels will live, more than that will die, and the consumer will finally have their say. Let's see how many of the 500 channels clogging the airwaves will actually have enough people willing to pay for them each month to survive. My guess: not many, and so good riddance, cable welfare riders.

Anyway, thank U HBO!!!!!!
