I should probably watch the video before commenting but I'm reluctant. What I will say is I wish these black athletes would get it together. Now we have another black face to be the representative for domestic abuse in the media.

This isn't a black thing, despite the race-baiting that Graycap is attempting.

It wouldn't matter what color the man is. When you see the video, you will understand that the reaction most have would be the same no matter what color the man.

On top of how bad the punch was (and it was really bad), Rice's reaction appears to be "Oh man. Why did she have to go and ruin my day by getting herself knocked out?" We can't hear anything Rice says, but he doesn't appear very concerned about picking his wife off the floor.

He's allegedly an NFL running back, and he isn't strong enough to pick a woman up? Yeah, right. He could, he just didn't care to. Hell, at one point he kicks her legs out of the way, trying to get the elevator door to close. The pussy wouldn't even bend over and pick her up. What a total pussy Ray Rice is.

It's a very disturbing and disgusting video.

That's what struck me too. This guy lifts more weight daily than she probably weighs and yet he's dragging her like some animal he shot on a hunting trip or something. hmm

How somebody turns around and marries somebody who drags them on the ground is beyond me.

MMA fighter War Machine did this to his girlfriend Christy Mack and it had little media coverage.

It had major coverage on the internet. And FWIW, "War Machine" will never fight MMA again. Neither UFC or Bellator will touch him. Bellator dropped him before he was even charged. Heck, UFC cut ties with him over things he said about President Obama, and now he's been charged with attempted murder. His fighting career is over.

I'd say he's been banned for life.

I was referring more to the major media. I should've prefaced that.

I saw a comment on social media today that was interesting saying that perhaps because the casino filed bankruptcy and is closing that a disgruntled employee leaked the footage to TMZ and that the NFL is basically reacting to the bad publicity (and also not following its own newly penned rules about two strikes you're out with domestic violence)

Maybe there was a zero tolerance or one strike rule of domestic violence in his contract before the new rules took effect. Or that bad publicity, and how it affects the NFL cancels out the contract. Who knows shrug

Yeah that's a good point. The timing is certainly suspect that's for sure. I'm sure he's lawyered up by now and will take the league to court possibly but of course that's assuming that there will be a criminal trial, which I seriously doubt she's going to press charges. I don't know if the rules of New Jersey apply in this case but it seems that in some states it doesn't matter if the victim presses charges or not, there will be charges pressed by "the state". So, that will factor into this as well. The prosecutor might be pressured to drop the charges but will Rice be picked up by another team? Only if they want a PR disaster waiting to happen. Geez, and these people thought Michael Sam was a circus, wait until this stuff plays out....

Wonder how long the marriage will last now that those NFL checks aren't coming in?

I don't think its about the money...

many women stay in abusive relationships to brokeasses all the time. The man has POWER over her, he is in her head and has manipulated her to PROTECT him.... even when he beats her up because he wore her down to the core.

This is WHY she married him... this is why she never called the police... this is why he will continue to whoop her ass at his own whim.

being a child of an abused mother, I see the mental abuse that goes on long before the punch and these women often feel isolated and alone. She will protec him, and stay with him because she thinks it will help her from getting the next beating.

Yeah that's a good point. There are plenty of women victimized by broke men who are abusive. Thanks for bringing that perspective. I guess we really can't speculate why she deals with it but I guess because he's super rich and famous people will automatically assume that's the motive but as you said, it begins with the power that he has over her, ultimately.

I'm inclined to agree sis....that's why I brought up battered woman syndrome in my other reply. I suspect that dynamic could be applied to this situation. I spent three years processing restraining orders and her behaviour fits the profile.

Most golddiggers only stay until the benefit runs out.... she isn't the "gold-digger" type because she is sticking with her guy. Most gold-diggers would have run for the hills and jumped on another athlete by now. She seems more like a "ride or die" type, abused and may be at his side for conjugal visits when his ass gets locked up too.

I don't think it's going to take long for this thread to reach 100 replies in the first 24 hours that it's been up. This is interesting to a lot of people because of how brutal it was and how the NFL is basically scrambling to come up with more excuses. Just think, these are only the cases we hear about. I bet there are media outlets that are paid to look the other way and many prosecutors that are "strongly encouraged" not to press charges against players. I bet the majority of cases go under the radar unless they are high profile situations with guys who get mixed up in crazy situations like Rice, Ray Lewis, Colin Kaepernick and the other A-list guys in the league.

It's really sad because most of them literally cannot fathom how to get themselves out of it and it becomes a cycle of abuse.

hmmm

The "old boys" network could very well be at work here... misogyny does play a very real role in some of these men's lives... not to mention those hopped up on testosterone who's tempers are quite volatile. Abusive men are all about power... and exercising it over their "loved" ones is something that could be commonplace among those who carry lots of bottled up frustrations from their work. Hate to catch some of these guys on a day they lose a freggin' game or match.

That's just it. Some people felt they did a spin job to say she hit him first because they

saw them dolla bills flying out the window. I don't know whether she hit him first or not

but the whole marriage thing seemed like a desperate attempt to protect that bank account

Yeah I wonder about women who get with boxers, fighters and other dudes that are always, as you said, up on that testosterone trip. I don't want to generalize but it sems more often times than not, they are usually violent off the field. The sad thing is, we don't hear enough about the nice guys who don't do stuff like this at all.

I missed the press conference, gonna have to search online. But, was it just the typical talking head soundbites? I imagine that it was so I know I'm not missing anything. I bet these NFL players are gonna think twice before they get mixed up in drama, at least for a while anyway. All these players getting suspended left and right might even affect the outcome of the playoffs and make for total random victories for certain teams. Oh, lemme stop before I have to start an NFL conspiracy theory thread on here!

As a men said this morining on Espen. The question should be asked, why did Rice continue to hit his now wife... not necessarily why she stayed. Again, who knocked the shit out of whom? Because if that's the case are all people who are beaten, killed, lynched, raped, shot, tortured, or exterminated, are they some how culpable in their own demise?

For all this talk about this young woman's motives, has anyone bothered to question the motives of the Ravens, NFL, Roger Goodell, the District Attorney of Baltimore and the public? Time and time again we've put winning at all cost above doing the right thing. Violence against women is excused and tolerated... violence against the old, the young and/or the marginalized are accepted.

It's my understanding AP news has the full length video of Rice beating and spitting on this young woman, now his wife.

As I understand it, both Rice and his wife were arrested and charged. Then, the prosecutors/grand jury saw the entire video and they: (1) dropped the charges against Janay Rice; and (2) upped the charges against Ray Rice to assault.

Rice pled to a deal whereby he has to complete a treatment program and stay clean for a year. If he does that, his record is expunged. My guess is that without testimony from Rice's wife, that was the best the government could get. Plus, Rice is/was an NFL player and it's no secret pro athletes get the best deals in these cases. But at least the government did actually charge Rice after seeing the video.

Janay Rice released a statement. It's sad on pretty much every level possible:

"I woke up this morning feeling like I had a horrible nightmare, feeling like I'm mourning the death of my closest friend. But to have to accept the fact that it's reality is a nightmare in itself. No one knows the pain that the media & unwanted [opinions] from the public has caused my family. To make us relive a moment in our lives that we regret every day is a horrible thing. To take something away from the man I love that he has worked his ass of for all his life just to gain ratings is horrific. THIS IS OUR LIFE! What don't you all get. If your intentions were to hurt us, embarrass us, make us feel alone, take all happiness away, you've succeeded on so many levels. Just know we will continue to grow & show the world what real love is! Ravensnation we love you!"

I guess my eyes are bad or something or the video is poor quality because I don't see the actual punch, just her falling down. BUT, the way he dragged her limp body off the elevator and then appeared to dump and kick her speaks to his violence. Who was the guy who appeared while Rice was standing over her body after he dragged her off the elevator, and what was being said? In any event, she needs counseling for marrying the fool after this type of attack. And who's to say he's not continuing to kick her ass as a result of losing his career? She's claiming to stand by her man, but how much more is she willing to take to save face?

I wonder what Whoopi has to say because she opined that a woman deserves to be attacked if she attacks first a la Solonage and JZ.
