Why Have Muscle You Can't Use?

As many in this ole org know... i have been body building for almost 3 years now. And wonder why some people get too big and never stretch, do cardio, or run.

There's a lot of guys who are HUGE! freaking diesel truck size. But they can't spring, jump, or even walk up a flight of stairs without breathing heavy. If someone knocks them on the floor, it will take them a minute to get up razz lol

That's why i wanna be big... but be an athlete too. We don't have a body to put on display (Although some do) we have a body to use! and to do with it everything we can as a human being.

A good looking body is not always a useful body. A useful body is way more sexy than having the most muscles.

I do make sure to lift heavy. But i make sure to have my cardio days, i make sure to run a few times a week. And i make sure to play sports every once in awhile too.

Who else has a more ''athletic'' body? have you ever been bulky? which did you prefer in the end?

This picture is a good representation of what i look like now. ''Bulky'' or ''beefy'' i guess is a good term. Trying to work on abdominals and legs the most at the moment.

i'm a gym rat and i admit i love the way muscles look on me. my wife compliments me when she sees growth, not sure if she has a limit in her mind of what's too much, because i don't LOL. i HATE cardio though, that's my challenge. it gets too monotonous for me so i have to mix it up, because being muscular is not necessarily being fit. they have a cardio "boot camp" class at my gym which helps keep things fresh.

I prefer tone AND mass, with good cardio stamina i'd like to be 235 with abs and stamina, i'm 5'11. i flip through Flex and keep up with certain BB competitions and those guys are HUGE, they inspire and give me new routine ideas but its a bit too much IMO.

Nah! that is just a guy who is rather beefy. I somewhat look like that right now. Trying to work hard on my legs and abdominals at the moment. 4 times a week on those, with cardio and stretching. I have a short korean friend i workout with who's ripped. He's a good motiviation for staying with legs!

I started doing different things for cardio. Hiking, biking, walking a few miles each day etc. Staying on the stair master or treadmill is deathly boring after awhile. My next stop is yoga... eventually smile

those muscles up there look so bulky it would be one size for the shirt, totally different size for the pants. i like better proportions, and a more wiry-but-strong look, personally

Being a woman who lifts, and has done for about 18 months now, I don't have to worry about being overly bulky; just because of my sex. However, I prefer functional muscle on guys...I like big....but not to point where, as you have said, it impedes movement....cause I need my guys to move and move well smile

It's more about strength and endurance than size. I read Bruce Lee could do bicep curls with 80 lb. dumbells. That's what I'm talking about.

I'm about to go back to the gym for the first time in a month, and for about the seventh time in three months.

I got a bulging disc back in February, which touched my sciatic nerve and made me want to cut off my left leg. The pain was like nothing I had ever experienced before, and was the worst pain I had ever felt - by a factor of at least ten times. That took a month of chiropractic treatment to fix and when I went back to the gym, my bench press had gone from 331 pounds to 176 pounds.

After three weeks of steady workouts, I got the bench back up to 311 pounds. But then I compressed a nerve in my right hip. I thought the former sciatic nerve pain was bad, but it was NOTHING compared to this. I could not move without screaming and crying (real tears, too). As a diabetic, I was afraid I'd lose at least my right leg, and maybe both. Or, I was going to be in a wheelchair for maybe the rest of my life. I literally could not move without the most intense pain I have ever felt.

Back in 1985, I tore open my face, and had to get 125 stitches in various places on my face (including my tear duct). About 30 stitches were on my lower lip, tying it back together. They took those stitches out after a few weeks, but skin had grown over them. I almost passed out when they took those stitches out.

That was NOTHING compared to the pain caused by that compressed nerve. But thanks to about 20 more chiropractic adjustments, I am pain-free and ready to resume working out.

You want to know the most ironic part? Neither injury was caused by weight-lifting. They were caused by lifting stuff at dance contests, and around the house, and twisting while lifting.

I've never done weight-lifting exercises where you twist while lifting and I can assure you, I never will!

I'd hoped to be benching 350 pounds by now, but my new target date is probably going to have to be September 1. Here we go!

Holy shit man eek had no idea you went through all of that!~ eek

I have done some twist while lifting exercises. And i like them quite a lot! but they can be risky if done wrong. I pulled a muscle one time doing the traps machine... ouch that hurt like a bitch.

glad your getting back into everything man smile and hitting 311 at an older age is mighty impressive!

Thanks. I lifted today for the first time in three weeks. Felt pretty good but didn't use heavy weights.

I've benched 331 this year. The goal is to get to 350 and then see what happens next.

As I'm sure you are fully aware, always use proper form and you can do any exercist you want. My rule of thumb is that if I have to cheat to get the weight up, I'm using too much weight.

Sucks getting older. Age(53) has forced me to adjust and cut back on certain exercises. The days of 400 lb squats are over - the knees and back can't take it. Same with deadlifts. But I can still max out leg press with no pain. When the shoulder feels right, I have to work on my flat bench press.....275-280 sucks, I want it up to at least 315. I can do between 3-5 wide-grip chin ups with 45 lbs. strapped to my waist. Weighted dips I can handle between 85-100 lbs. Seated shoulder press I can max out 6 reps with 80 lb. dumbells. I don't that's bad for an old man only 5'9", 200 lbs.

It's freaking awesome!

The older we get, the more I've found how important perfect form is. And there are great exercises we can do with perfect form that still build big muscles. I am firmly convinced that we can keep benching as much as we want, for as long as we want - as long as we don't arch our back, or ever let our arms go below parallel with the floor.

On flat bench, I always let the bar touch the bottom of my chest. Hopefully by the winter, I'll be in the 300 lb range. Taking shit slow and careful.
