Baretta Has Been Sprung!?!

Yeah... it happened Friday, but it's not been posted here, so here goes... read this:

Robert Blake Sprung!
Fri Mar 14, 8:20 PM ET

By Marcus Errico

For the first time in nearly a year, Robert Blake got his first sniff of freedom--and by the looks of things, it almost did him in.

The ex-Baretta, granted bail in a last-ditch plea at the close of his preliminary hearing Thursday, was released on $1.5 million bond late Friday afternoon.

But upon exiting downtown Los Angeles' Men's Central Jail about 4:30 p.m., the visibly frail accused wife-killer was nearly crushed by dozens of camera-wielding, notebook-waving media types, who immediately pounced on Blake in hopes of capturing his first post-release sound bite.

Propped up by sheriff's deputies and his lawyer, Thomas Mesereau Jr., the 69-year-old Blake managed to wobble free from the scrum and give a short statement.

"Thank God," the haggard Blake said, "I'm still here after 11 months in a cement box.

"I'm okay. I'm going to sleep for three or four days.

"I have had an exquisite life," he continued, grabbing a quick drag on a cigarette. "I have had incredible highs and terrible lows, and I'm still here. And I wouldn't trade my life for anybody's in the world."

Clad not in the blue-gray pinstriped suit--his garment of choice during the prelim--but in an ill-fitting long-sleeved white T-shirt, black pants and white sneakers, Blake was ushered into his lawyer's black Mercedes sedan and chauffeured off to an undisclosed location. During his 11-month stint in the slammer, Blake sold his homes in the suburbs of Hidden Hills and Studio City. He will not stay with his daughters, Delinah and Rose, but plans on seeing them shortly after his release. In the meantime, he is expected to crash with friends.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Lloyd Nash ruled Thursday that prosecutors had presented enough evidence for Blake to stand trial for the May 4, 2001 slaying of his wife, Bonny Lee Bakley. The onetime Emmy winner is facing charges that could land him in prison for life. His handyman and bodyguard Earle Caldwell, 46, was also ordered to stand trial for conspiring with Blake to commit the murder. He remains free on $1 million bail, which Blake bankrolled in April.

Both men have pleaded innocent to all charges facing them.

Blake had repeatedly been denied bail since hisApril 18 arrest. Even on Thursday, Nash was leaning toward leaving Blake behind bars. But Mesereau argued that prosecutors hadn't met the legal threshold to do so, and Nash, in a stunning reversal, agreed.

Before being sprung from his isolated jail cell, the same one that once housed O.J. Simpson (news) and the Menendez brothers and the place the actor's called home since his arrest, Blake had to meet with the judge who will oversee his trial, Darlene Schmepp. Schmepp signed off on Blake's release after he turned in his passport and submitted a list of likely addresses he'd visit.

The ex-Little Rascal's movements will be monitored by an ankle bracelet, affectionately referred to by probation officers as Sentinel. He must wear the anklet at all times except when he's in court.

No trial date has been set, but all parties are due back before Schmepp for pretrial wrangling on March 27.
