I'm going to ask for a raise today...

...and I have never had to do this before.

Any advice as to the best way to do it?

I'm a little nervous....but the bottom line is that I can no longer afford to stay in this position unless I get a substantial raise.

Thanks!

I'm a tad lost as every other job I have ever had did yearly reviews and I was always offered a raise but out in this neck of the woods it apparently doesn't work that way.

I'm not too concerned with my work performance as the one and only review I've had was extremely positive. It's just that I have taken on more work in the last 2 years and have not been compensated for it at all.

The best way to ask for a raise to is clearly explain your reasons for it. Explain about the additional duties you've taken on, how much time is used to complete those duties and how you have been able to handle those additional tasks as well as your normal duties. Highlight your knowledge, skills and abilities and how you stand above the "average" employee. Have you attended any workshops, or attended any conferences that have been related to your job? If so, I would mention that as well which shows your willingness to grow in your field but to most importantly demonstrate that you are a marketable and valued employee.

Hope this helps.

Good Luck!

Make sure you have a list of accomplishments and reasons why you deserve a raise

Know your worth.

Good luck!

I read this blog all the time -- it seems to have a lot of useful advice:

http://money.usnews.com/money/blogs/outside-voices-careers/2013/05/08/what-your-manager-is-thinking-when-you-ask-for-a-raise

http://www.askamanager.org/2012/08/how-much-should-you-ask-for-when-you-ask-for-a-raise.html

The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

They said the best time to ask for a raise is after lunch about 130pm. You are more likely to get what you ask for according to the studies.

Make it short and sweet.

I have been here X years.

I have received X number of good reviews.

My attendance is .....

I would like a modest raise of $X an hour.

I had to do this recently, and the only thing I would add is that it helps to research what people in your field & position typically make

This is definitely something to focus on, and obviously not on the fact that you can't afford to live on what you're paid. Of course the latter thing is most important to us, just not to them!

The good news is that when you ask you usually get something, even if it's not quite what you want.

So I didn't ask yesterday nor am I asking today as I was asked to attend a presentation at my son's school this morning. I figured on a day I missed an hour of work I probably shouldn't go there.

But I'll ask for a meeting on Monday.

The good news is I have a very good rapport with my boss (and she confides in me a LOT) so talking to her will not be difficult. I'm more nervous about how the big guns will react when she goes to them on my behalf.

From pages 43-44 of 'thinking fast & slow' by daniel kahneman (a great, great book btw):

"A disturbing demonstration of the depletion effects in judgment was recently reported in the Proceedings of the Journal of the National Academy of Sciences. The unwitting participants in the study were eight parole judges in Israel. They spend entire days reviewing applications for parole. The cases are presendted in random order, and the judges spend little time on each one, an average of 6 minutes. (...only 35% of requests are approved...). The authors of the study plotted the proportion of approved requests against the time since the last food break. The proprtion spikes after each meal, when about 65% of request are granted. During the two hours or so until the judges' next feeding, the approval rate drops steadily, to about zero just before the meal."

I would recommend that you not do it on Monday or on a friday. Monday is usually a busy day for most offices and a lot of distractions. Friday most bosses are only thinking about the weekend and rolling out early. I think wed or thurs would be a better. I know it sounds crazy. I think when you go to your boss be confident and don't let him see you sweat. I know this next thing sounds bad....but make sure you were something sexy/ professional.....but not too sexy.

Ok, I'll wait another couple of days.

Sexiness won't work. My boss is a woman...not that I would want to use any sort of sex appeal at work. shake

Then you will be in Amsterdam by yourself. lol Maybe it's different in Thailand, but now that you are back in the U.K., you should know that summer solstice for the rest of the Northern Hemisphere isn't until June 21st. razz
