Lee Daniels in Talks to Direct Richard Pryor Biopic (Exclusive)

Lee Daniels and Michael B. Jordan are being linked to an untitled Richard Pryor biopic.

Michael B. Jordan, Marlon Wayans and Eddie Murphy are among the actors being eyed for The Weinstein Company film.

Lee Daniels is looking to get back into business with The Weinstein Company.

The director is in negotiations to tackle an untitled Richard Pryor biopic as his follow-up to The Butler.

The Weinstein Company, which produced and distributed Daniels' surprise hit about a White House butler, will fully finance the Richard Pryor project.

Michael B. Jordan, Marlon Wayans and Eddie Murphy are among the actors being eyed for the film, which has been in the works for years with different actors attached, including Wayans and Murphy. Sources say both are still in the mix, particularly Wayans, who at 41 years old is considered to be the right age for the project and whose screen test is said to have wowed Harvey Weinstein.

But Jordan, who became a breakout star with The Weinstein Company's Fruitvale Station, has emerged as the front-runner to tackle the life of the iconic comedian, who died in 2005 at age 65. The question remains whether the 26-year-old can be aged up through makeup for the role, much of which covers Pryor when he was in his 30s.

Pryor, who was hailed as one of the most important and influential stand-up comedians of all time, also had a troubled side. In 1980, he set himself on fire while freebasing cocaine and suffered severe burns.

Pryor's widow, Jennifer Pryor, is producing the film. She brings to the project more than 50 pages of Pryor's personal journals, which offer a glimpse into his brilliant, but dark, mind.

Daniels' The Butler sparked a heated fight between Weinstein and Warner Bros. over the use of the title (Warner Bros.' library includes a 1916 silent short also titled The Butler). The Weinstein Company wound up changing its film's official title to Lee Daniels' The Butler. Despite, or perhaps buoyed by, the controversy, Daniels' period drama has earned $167 million to date worldwide.

Daniels is no stranger to gritty fare. His 2009 film Precious -- about a teenage mother living in poverty -- became an indie breakout, earning $64 million worldwide and several Oscar nominations, including best picture and best director for Daniels.

I think Michael B Jordan is a perfext cast choice. Marlon I just never could get in my head of playing Richard. Even though he is fearless! Eddie is too old. Unless he played an older Pryor. But most of the movie is set in Pryor's 30's. This is going to be interesting! Lee has been known to go back & forth with his cast choices. I know Marlon hates Jordon about now! Nothing is never set in stone in Hollywood!!!

I still vote for Marlon. He's got the acting talent and comedy pumps through his veins. I'm not so sure about Michael B. Jordan. I like him well enough as the talented young actor he is but it'll take way more than acting talent and memorizing some jokes to portray Richard Pryor.

I will say Marlon has really been preparing himself for this role! He has been out on tour doing a LOT of stand up for the past few years. If he doesn't get this role he is going to be pissed! Jennifer Pryor has been very picky on who she wants to portary Richard...She didn't want Mike Epps! Although he did eventually play Richard in another movie. I think she wants Jordan to have it...

I wonder why Jennifer didn't like Mike Epps? I think he could have done a good job also. I personally want the person that gets the role to have the ability to really get into it, like Jamie Foxx did in his portrayal of Ray Charles in "Ray". Whenever I watch it, I don't see Jamie Foxx acting like Ray Charles. I see, Ray Charles. I hear Ray Charles. I feel Ray Charles.

Richard's story deserves that type of portrayal and I'm just not so sure MBJ has the comedic chops and grit for that. shrug

Whoever gets it! Lee will make sure it is the right one. Even though Richard was a comedian, he also had an intensity & pain about him. If you saw "Friutvale Station" you would understand that Jordan has that & a comedic side. Its not just about being just funny. All three could do it at different stages. But they would have to forfeit their salary & work scale.

I haven't seen the Butler yet, but just recently I saw some things that now make me really want to see it. If he gives actors room to truly bring out their acting chops, I'm all for him doing the biopic. Precious was brutal and just hit a tired nerve with me, but what Monique (sp? too busy to Google) brought out on screen was some "deep" unseen stuff and that was impressive from an acting stand point.

I haven't seen Fruitvale Station yet. I've heard good things and will definitely check it out.

I went to a special screening of "Fruitvale Station", before it was released, during the week of the BET Awards last year. The whole cast & family of Oscar Grant was in attendance. It wasn't a dry eye in the place afterwards! Jordan captured his essence in the movie. That is how I know he can portray Pryor. I hope he gets an Oscar nod....
