Doctor Sleep

Anybody read it yet? im about 60% into the audiobook and so far I love it. Loving the "shining" interactions between Dan Torrance and the little girl Abbra.

I read Doctor Sleep a couple of months ago. I'm a huge Stephen King fan, I've read all his work. Doctor Sleep is very well written with a great story to back it up. King has a way of making the reader believe everything he's writing about even if it seems so over the top.

I also just finished reading Joyland and it was quite good too. I can't wait for the next SK release coming this spring.

I am a big Stephen King fan, too.

I started reading Doctor Sleep, but felt like I needed to go back and reread The Shining.

I just finished it, and am about to begin Doctor Sleep again.

His movies can be kind of lame. Some are ok, but others seem silly and unbelieveable. I find when I'm reading his books I can believe anything he writes because he's such a good writer. Sure, he's not Hemingway, but he's great at his genre. I've been reading SK for 30 years. Some of my fav books are IT, The Stand, The Dark Tower series, Black House, Misery, Duma Key, The Green Mile. I've liked all his books, some just a little more than others. I really enjoy the characters in his stories too. Some are complete assholes and others are heroes.

I agree.
I've read everything he has written. biggrin

I loved The Dark Tower series, and how they connect to so many other books.
I thought that "Lisey's Story" was one of the hardest to read.

The movies, meh...

I can watch Shawshank Redemption every time it comes on, but I'm still mad about The Tommyknockers. The rest fall somewhere on the spectrum.

'IT' was the first King book i read and i've been hooked eversince. I also love and highly reccomend The Talisman and Black House, their all good though really, he's just a great story teller.

This is a sequel to the Shining?

The Talisman is my favorite for some odd reason, maybe cause it's just crazy.

Wolf and Henry are probably my favourite King characters.

I'm DEFINITELY going to read it. I'm working my way through my 3rd re-read of my favorite Stephen King novel, "It", at the moment though.

There are several of his that i've missed that I'd like to go back and read.

My fav of his so far for me is Lisey's Story. Their connection was very intimate and erotic and something I want in a lover/wife...but in a real sense...not a SK sense if u follow.

I can still vividly see that beast chained in the basement...well enuff to tell a police sketch artist. Those little creeps in insomnia make me giggle...and the come-to-lif cartoons in regulators...MOVIE PLEASE. u better include the pantieless shot and the ceremonial tip of the martini glass to the sealed vermooth bottle. Details...love em.

Oh no... I wasn't that far in. It was the beginning that just dragged for me.
I remember thinking that it was the first Stephen King book that I really didn't like.
But then I found myself with nothing new to read, so I picked it up and started over.
I'm glad I read it now, but boy oh boy... it was a struggle. lol

eek say what? see, that's the thing about reading king's stuff, it can really be really, truly scary. i had to put gerald's game down for about fiteen years before i had the courage to pick it back up and read it to the end. hehe. eek the plots are often completely fantastic and you can practically even smell the characters they're so real but king's voice is so charming i follow the story no matter how unbelievable. i love his collaborations with peter straub too, btw. lisey's story is upstairs in my book cupboard, waiting to be read. what's this about a rape scene and can opener nipple action???? eek eek eek eek eek eek

Writer dies...fanboy want unpublished stuff from wife. Rapes her and takes a can opener to her nipples and tears it half off in a step to coerce her to giving him unpublished...this was after dead bunny in her mail box but before the huge beast chains in the writers fathers basement that gets fed pounds of raw meats...

bad gunky...sowisa...strap it on...baby luv...gomers...its a novel with some of its own language... Its about a writer...so that works.

It has a beautiful hardcover.

This thread made me think what SK books have been made

into good/decent movies. I could think of 6:

Carrie

The Shining

The Dead Zone

Misery

The Green Mile

The Shawshank Redemption

Now I know the list of shitty SK movies is very long.

Some of those shitty movies are based on weak books.

But I can't think of any other author from the second half

of the 20th century who has had so many of his books

made into movies. At least a few are good.

He had a very poor, outhouse status, childhood. On top of that he was and unpopular, an outsider and isolated. So his imagination had lots of time to grow coupled with sources of 'motivation'.

Cats eye was decent...cute little drew...and even cuter little arrow toting goblin...and the quitters inc. bit. Stand by Me is my favorite SK film.

Patterson is also very silver screen friendly. Clancy as well. Alex cross and agent Ryan respectively.

Se7en being one of the best movies in the decade.

If u grew up in 50s 60s new england...there's plenty of inspiration. Its people watching is all. Those types of characters for him never success or even have more than 1 or 2 decent qualities. Doloros' husband died in well....slooooowly. Jim Rennie got his due. Delacroix's nemises got his ticket to the nuthouse. He has no love for these people and no desire to be them...the world is sooo bloated with terrible behavior...there is NO shortage of material to draw...very accurately...from. It probably helps keep his own moral priorities to the fire.
