Les parapluies de Cherbourg / The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) - A young girl separated from her lover by war faces a life altering decision.

Wow, the colors in the film are cranked up to 11. Plus Catherine Deneuve singing in French in the early 60s equals a perfect rating from me. star star star star star

Superman: Man Of Steel. 5/10 First hour was pretty good but the rest of the movie was just fighting.

Grown Ups 2 5/10 Has a few chuckles but overall pretty tame. Ballet teacher is hot in it.

Certified Copy (2010): Juliette Binoche is fantastic, and William Shimmel is really good. But the "are they or aren't they" twist was a bit disingenuous, and very derivative of the Before Sunrise/Sunset series.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (2011)

One of the best movies of the decade thus far; great ensemble cast, and Gary Oldman gives his greatest performance to date for my twocents

A Girl Walks Into A Bar (2011)

Nice ensemble cast, good performance by the underrated Carla Gugino.

Pretty In Pink (1986)

I've been on a "films of 1986" kick this year and I'd never seen it before. Great for nostalgic viewing by those like me who went to high school in the 80's. Jon Cryer's Ducky and of course Spader made the movie.

starstarstar plus 1/2 for nostalgia's sake.

Newlyweeds (2013)
I was lucky enough to see a special screening of this where the director, producer, and stars of it hosted and did a Q&A session after... This film is being billed as a "romance stoner dramedy", and I was prepared not to like it much, since I'm not a fan of "stoner comedies".. I enjoyed it though! Enough drama to get me invested in the characters.

I'd give it a 3 or 3.5 (extra .5 point because they trashed their happy ending, in favor of something more obscure and even a little surreal)

If you will, so will I

I suppose the movie is derivative in that, like the before series, it's almost composed entirely of a conversation between a couple in an exotic locale, but beyond that, I think it very much establishes its own identity.

Something About Mary Special Edition on DVD A+++ Have not seen this in years. Maybe my all time fav. crying so hard laughing comedy. Whenever they release a decent version on BD I'm getting it. Diaz looks cute in this movie, even though I'm don't think she is hot.

I can't disagree. Juliette Binoche was incredible in those single-shot reaction scenes and the final scene.

V10LETBLUES

Prisoners. popcorn popcorn popcorn popcorn

One of the best films of the year. I went in thinking it was just an overblown Lifetime victim of the week film only to see it as the best acted movie of the year by far. You quickly get that the premise is just a way to present a story that is full of symbolism, the state of the US, how we look the other way when we as a nation commit atrocities in the name of, you name it, god, justice, ends to a means. Would Love to see Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman get Oscar nominations as well as the director.

I also didn't expect it to be as good as it was. The theme of being held captive ran until the very end.

Persona (1966) - A nurse is put in charge of an actress who can't talk and finds that the actress's persona is melding with hers.

Some scenes were beautifully shot. And I appreciated the experimental feel of it which I'm sure made a huge impact at the time it was released. star star star star

The Counselor (2013)

I did not enjoy this movie personally. Found it hard to stay interested in the plot so I mostly just ignored the story all together in favor of just oogling Michael Fassbender. Cameron Diaz's annoyingness is at an all time high in this as well

Enough Said (2013) - A divorced woman who decides to pursue the man she's interested in learns he's her new friend's ex-husband.

It felt refreshingly real. James Gandolfini was very good. star star star star

Only God Forgives (2013) - Julian, a drug-smuggler thriving in Bangkok's criminal underworld, sees his life get even more complicated when his mother compels him to find and kill whoever is responsible for his brother's recent death.

I watched it for Kiristin Scott Thomas. Simultaneously exquisite and abhorrent. star star 1/2

The Shining (1980)

This was actually my very first time seeing this at a local screening last night. The huge hotel and the maze in the blizzard created some wonderfully spooky images. And Jack Nicholson was off-the-charts crazy. star star star star star

Iam not big on horror at all (unless its classic horror) but this was a fun film (from 1973). The lead girl, Pamela Franklin, was surprisenly good and alot better then the other actors. It's a shame she apparantly got typecast in these sorta films. I remember her in "The Prime of Miss Jane Brodie", where as a teen, she acts surprisenly well up against acted giant Maggie Smith.

Don Jon (2013) - A New Jersey guy dedicated to his family, friends, and church, develops unrealistic expectations from watching porn and works to find happiness and intimacy with his potential true love.

It was quite funny. And Scarlett Johansson looked GOOD. star star star

Well acted movie; plotlines weren't Allen's best but still a worthy addition to the canon.

La vie d'Adèle / Blue Is the Warmest Color (2013) - Adele's life is changed when she meets Emma, a young woman with blue hair, who will allow her to discover desire, to assert herself as a woman and as an adult. In front of others, Adele grows, seeks herself, loses herself, finds herself.

The girls' relationship was portrayed very passionately. star star star star 1/2
