Target security breach may affect millions of credit, debit cards See, stuff like this is why I'm leery about using my debit/credit cards in any business. Even the well known ones. The breach was said to affect nearly all 1,800 stores nationwide. Photo: ., Associated Press
Target Corp. is confronting a security breach that potentially exposed the credit and debit cards of millions of customers who started their holiday shopping at the retailer, according to multiple sources familiar with the problem. Minneapolis-based Target did not respond to requests Wednesday for comment on the extent of the data theft, which was first disclosed in an online report by Brian Krebs, a journalist who specializes in computer security. A Target spokesman would say only that the company was checking out the reported theft. A spokeswoman for American Express confirmed the breach in an interview with the Star Tribune, and the Secret Service confirmed to the Wall Street Journal and the Associated Press that it has begun its own investigation. “We’re working with Target on this,” Marina Norville, an American Express spokeswoman, said Wednesday. “It’s an investigation right now. We’ve put fraud controls in place.” On his website, Krebs quoted unnamed sources as saying the computer breach occurred on or around Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and one of the year’s busiest shopping days. It may have continued until Dec. 6 or Dec. 15, sources told Krebs, involving transactions in stores but not online purchases.

I went throug this a few weeks ago. My card was frozen! I went into the bank (Bank of America) and it took me several trips into the bank and then a phone call to the main bank line for someone to say it was a breach. So I go back again to get a new card. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!" | |

People worry about their financial information being stolen when they use their cards online but they don't realize the risk is very much the same when debit/credit cards are being used in stores, restaurants and gas stations. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

Target probe eyes overseas hackers; stolen cards for sale onlineWASHINGTON (Reuters) - Investigators believe that overseas hackers were responsible for the cyber attack on U.S. retailer Target Corp that compromised up to 40 million payment cards during the first three weeks of the holiday shopping season, a person familiar with the matter said on Friday. The person, who was not authorized to talk publicly about the matter, declined to say how the hackers got in or where investigators believe they are based, saying investigators don't want to show their hand to the criminals. Meanwhile the blogger who first broke news of the breach, Brian Krebs, reported that data stolen from Target had begun flooding underground markets that sell stolen credit cards. KrebsOnSecurity.com reported on Friday that cards stolen from Target were being offered at "card shops" for rates starting at $20 each and going to more than $100. Target has said that hackers accessed data on up to 40 million payment cards over 19 days through Dec 15 in the second-largest retail breach in U.S. history. It is not known who is behind the attack or how they accessed Target's network.

A co-worker had a fraudulent $95 charge on her card, found when a second one tried to post and set off an alert at her bank, who promptly called her to confirm. They cancelled the card and are sending out a new one.
