Golden Globes disses "The Butler" with ZERO nods. On Wednesday The SAG awards honored "The Butler" with "Best Picture, Best Actor & Best Supporting Actress"...Then on Thursday the Damn Foreign Press showed us their Phat Ass...LOL...They SHUT out "The Butler" completely and went with the Ron Howard flop "Rush" that will probably get ZERO Oscar nods next month. I agree with a few Entertainment Reporters that say the snub appears to be "personal". "The Butler" is "awards bait" as it gets and it deserved to get "Best Picture, Best Actor & Screenplay" if NOTHING else....I might be wrong but I think The Foreign Press intentionally slapped The Mighty Oprah in the Face. ************************************************************************ On the brite side Idris Elba was nominated for "Best Actor in "Mandella" and "Luther" & Chiwetel Ejiofor ALSo got 2 nods for "12yrs" and the showtime Miniseries"... ********************************************************************* The stars of “American Hustle and “12 Years a Slave” are having a very good morning! One day after the nominees for the SAG ... announced, Zoe Saldana, Olivia Wilde and Aziz Ansari announced the nominees for the 71st annual Golden Globes, and those films came out on top, with seven nods each. (Still, others are left scratching their heads, wondering what happened to Oprah’s nomination for “Lee Daniels’ “The Butler”!) Tune in to the awards ceremony on Jan. 12, and get ready to laugh: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are returning this year to host.

I went to a private screening of "The Butler" for The Film Society Nominee Committee two weeks ago and was blown away by this movie. I'm a just go on say its RACIST! The Golden Globes didn't want two African American movies in the same category. My opinion...  will ALWAYS think of  like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. |

it was fine for what it was. it wasn't awful, but i don't think that it was anything that special. the best thing about 'the butler' was forest whitaker, and speaking to my other friends who saw it as well, we all thought that he gave that character a depth that the script did not and his performance would be the only reason to see the film. moreover, some of the choices to play the presidents were full on stupid and embarrassing which undermined the whole thing. i didn't know whether to laugh when i saw "nixon" and "reagan". casting fonda as nancy reagan is the type of expert trolling you'd see on the internet. how can the director expect anyone to take the film seriously when he obviously can't? | |

not really into those kind of movies. As a black woman I've seen enough of them to last a lifetime. Oprah as an actress really doesn't excite me at all and neither does Forrest Whittaker. | |

Butlers and maids in 2010 movies (even if the butler one was based on a real life story) is still so 20th century stuff. I won't be surprised if it doesn't get Oscar nods. | |

Yeah. It's a complex issue. I think with some blacks, we're okay (not me personally of course) with movies that focused on a horrific time in history related to us. I'd love to see movies on Bessie Coleman, Jesse Owens and George Washington Carver. Or even fiction movies that focused on heroes that just happen to be black because we still don't see that often. Forest Whitaker is a great actor, always has been. Loved his work in "The Last King of Scotland" and "Bird". I can only hope that James Brown biopic is put out either next year or the year after next. I agree about more Asian themed movies too. | |

This rant may get flack but I don't really care. I'm African American and I really don't get how other AA's are bothered or "tired" of seeing movies like "The Butler" or "12 Years A Slave"...it's history, it actually did happen and though it's going to make you mad and uncomfortable, it doesn't bother me that these movies are still being made. You have to think that the real life people who lived these actual events in real life had it 10 times worse that it can ever be portrayed in Hollywood, so even if there's a glimpse of this life being created on film, I think it's a slap in the face for folks to say, "well I'm tired of seeing this type of stuff". The people who lived it never got a break. I think today's generation (no matter the race) don't know too much about history anyway and NEED to see these type of movies to understand how things used to be in order to understand and appreciate those who paved the way for us to not have to go through the things that they had to go through. You don't see folks walking around asking why movies about the Holocaust are still being made, so why is the question of the creation of movies about slavery, maids and butler's still being raised? I also think with black folks, we're very fickle. It's refreshing that we don't think alike, some like missfee are okay with films like this because of the history that can be learned from it (and that's cool) but I always felt black history should be given a more thorough examination by Hollywood without them trying to Disney-ize it or Hollywood it too much. I wonder if the Jackie biopic was decent? | |

Dude, you didn't see it?! It was decent. If we want the roster of options to be diversified, we HAVE to support! It seemed kinda....something
But my two cents is that I beg to differ (Gunshalen) that for the average person on the street only seeing "slave" movies as it relates to AA history. Rosewood, Red Tails, Ray & 42 to name a few show a broader slice of our history. It depends on WHOM you ask, but its not like Hollywood has run the subject into the ground by ANY means, quite contrary. That would be the upteenth take on the Holocaust (Valkyrie, Defiance, The Boy with the Striped Pajamas, and The Reader all came out the same year!! but i digress) As for the Butler, it was barely above average. I wanted to blown away but I wasn't. I like David Oyelow's performance (the OTHER African Brit doing major work alongside Chiwetel and Idris). I think Forest, as has been stated brought depth and I think he should get a nod. Oprah was good too, but maybe not Oscar good. If it gets shut out I wouldn't be surprised, nor would I be at a nod for both of them. With the expanded Best Pic list to 10, lots of "obligatory" noms take place, The Butler might get one.
I think the Harriet Tubman story would be potentially stunning. As would a well done pic that captured the DuBois and Booker T debate about the best course for AA's after slavery. Lots of unmined real, history, slavery and otherwise to be explored, but WE have to write and not wait! And support and not bootleg!

Yep, The Mighty O will get an Oscar nod because SAG voters choose the SAG & Oscar nominees. The Fact that The Hollywood Foreign Press shut the ENTIRE film out of the Golden Globes makes the film an Oscar under-dog. "The Butler" heavy hitting MEGA producer Harvey Weinstein IS GOD of all the Hollywood Producers and with all the fighting he had to go through with the film that Fucker will see to it that it gets Oscar nods...NOBODY messes with Big-Harvey when he backs a Film or Actor...He's the reason Meryl Streep BEAT Viola Davis a couple of years ago... ***************************************************************** I didn't see Fruitvale Station(another critically acclaimed Black film) but it was also shut out from the SAGS & the Globes. I hear that movie should have gotten nods for "Best Actor" & "Best Supporting actress"....it got lost in the mix but had GREAT publicity over the summer.. ********************************************************************* Some Critics also said Jennifer Hudson was on FIRE with her portrayal of Winnie Mandela in the flick "Winnie"(now on PPV)...Critics thought the movie was just "mediocre". They praised Terrence Howard for his performance but ultimately stated that Jennifer wasn't playing with that performance....There was plenty of room in "The Best actress" category to give Jennifer a nod...... *********************************************************************** I hope Directors of all races and from all countries continue to blanket theatres with Films featuring leading Black actors..Hollywood studios will either get on board or get left behind.."Belle" is a time-period film dropping next year about a British biracial woman's struggle in a White family and society...I saw the trailer @ the theatre and it looks pretty good. I'd even say it's Oscar-bait for 2015...The actress playing the role is Beautiful and unknown...We'll be hearing more from her when the film opens next year....It is set to open Spring of 2014 but I bet they'll push it to the Fall... | |

In my opinion Oprah's wealth is irrelevant. Her fame can be thrown in the mix cuz she is who she is, but her bank account is another story..We saw last week that couldn't buy a nomination from the Golden Globes.. Every year The Hollywood Foreign Press likes to align itself with The SAGS when they nominate popular & box office films. "The Butler" was popular and a Box office hit. That can't be denied even if some hated the film. The Golden Globe's foreign press voters would have saved-face had they nominated "The Butler" for "Best Picture" & "Best Actor"...Instead they shut out EVERYBODY that was involved with the critically acclaimed film which got them MAJOR publicty. The Press is having a field-day reporting "the Golden Globes snubbed Oprah" and now they're saying "how are the Comedic-Hosts gonna address it during the ceremony?"..Shutting out Oprah is an odd and PLANNED move but it's also a win-win-media situation for them leading up to the ceremony......... ************************************************************************* Some feel we're over-crowded with SILLY mainstream awards..We have the Silly Grammys, Silly Emmys, Silly Tony's and on & on but it's still an honor winning these mainstream awards..I'm sure Prince & Chaka are proud of the Silly GRAMMYS they received for their work...Let's not down-play winning awards..Entertainers want to win at least 1 major award for their project(s).. | |

This is probably the main reason why Spike Lee goes the independent route. The problem with that is you don't even know that he has a new film out until he's done an interview or something and even by that time, the film has already left theaters. I know that "The Best Man Holiday" had a strong opening weekend and nearly topped the Thor sequel. Perhaps this will hopefully bring about a shift with those big wigs in Hollywood. I am a member of SAG & was a part of the Film Society Nominee Commitee...There is another private screening of "The Butler" coming up with the almighty Denzil Washington aboard. I will be attending it!! Things are going to happen!! Don't count out "Fruitvale Station" just yet.

Can I buy a SAG membership underground or will I have a better chance Fucking somebody to get one? I find all the private screenings and award Campaigning interesting. I saw a clip of Meryl saying she hates the competition and campaigning. Mo'nique REFUSED to campaign for ALL the movie awards she was nominated for. Mo' took a stand but her performance was unbeatable. Michael Fassbender("12yrs") already said he's not campaigning for anything and he'll be out of the country the entire award season. | |

And what exactly does the race of the spouses of the male actors in the movie HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH the topic at hand? Nothing at all. I don't go to the movies thinking that the actors in the movie would or wouldn't date me, that's silly. There's plenty of black women married to men who aren't black in this world as well. Mo'nique's method was groundbreaking!! She wouldn't make any appearances unless they paid for EVERYTHING airfare,hotel etc. She stood her ground to and still won..
