People named "Lipscomb" and "Fairfax"??? WTF is a lips comb?! Is it a small comb for the lips? What's the point in combing one's lips anyway? And how can a fax not be fair? Can I send an "unfair fax" to someone by calling them names while they haven't deserved it?
It's time people are allowed to chose their family names if you ask me ^^ |

Actually I've checked it's allowed in English countries! Y'all are much more evolved than us French barbarians, who are not allowed to choose our own names of all things! |

I thought I read somewhere that the French have been able to choose names freely since the mid '90s (with the exception of names that might be considered blaphemous). Is that incorrect?

It is. We can only change names if:
- Our family name is diffamatory (i.e. you're called the equivalent of "idiot" or "slut" or such words)
- Our family name is the name of an infamous character (i.e. Hitler, Stalin)
- Our family name is foreign we could benefit from it being francised for integration.
Outside of this it's all. The first name can't be changed at all and the family name can't be changed for any other reason than above. that's, in my opinion, a scandal, for anyone should be allowed to chose such a defining thing as one's own name. |

Wow. And what about giving a child his/her name in the first place? Do you have more latitude now of names from which to choose?

That's cool thanks to immigrants and hippies we can now name kids whatever we wish as long as it's not a name that's harmful to the kid (such as a ridiculous or rude word) in which case a judge can say no in the child's interest. But as long as it doesn't mean something you can come-up with any weird name and if they ask questions u just tell 'em "it's ethiopian and we love the ethopian culture" and they'll just shrug and write down the name. |
