Philomena (2013) - A world-weary political journalist picks up the story of a woman's search for her son, who was taken away from her decades ago after she became pregnant and was forced to live in a convent.

This is a very charming movie. No surprise, Judi Dench is great as the Irish mum. star star star star

Saw this yesterday, very good movie. Judi Dench and Steve Coogan are always great. I give it a 7 out of 10.

It's a british production so I had to giggle at the scenes other than the monuments that were supposedly shot in the US. The American accent on the waitress and the "mexican" cook lol

Now I know how other cultures must feel when Hollywood portrays them. Other funny cultural portrayals was her son's sister (what was up with her hair) and of course a gay man living in Washington would have a seminal "American" car like an El Camino in his front yard. lol

I raised an eyebrow when I saw the "Mexican" cook as well. lol

Gravity 4.5/10

Dialogue was brutal. No story as such. Too much padding to get the film up to around 85 mins.
Space debris scenes were good.
Was probably expecting too much as all reviews I had read said it was excellent.

After Earth 3/5 I liked it!

The set design was kind of weird, but it was original in terms of an organic rustic kind of sci-fi with plastic sheeting lol

The Family 7.5/10 Enjoyable and quirky film.Well worth a watch.

Insisious:Chapter 2 1/10 Brutal. Worst storyline ever. How they spent money on making this I will never know.I think they made this up as they went along.

Hobbit (smaug version). It's okay.3 out of 5.
If you like the first Hobbit, this one is as good.

There is a couple of noticeable moments of chopped off heads. If they liked LOTR trilogy or the first Hobbit they could go to it. But it's not a movie with an ending-kind of to be continued ending.

Ladri di biciclette / Bicycle Thieves (1948) A man and his son search for a stolen bicycle vital for his job.

I don't believe I've ever seen postwar Italy on film before. It was a very bleak story. star star star star 1/2

Nebraska (2013) - An aging, booze-addled father makes the trip from Montana to Nebraska with his estranged son in order to claim a million-dollar Mega Sweepstakes Marketing prize.

What really makes this movie shine for me is the cinematography. I fell in love with the American Midwest watching it. star star star star 1/2

It can be rather painfully poignant watching such superficiality fan its feathers, but even more so when it begins to sink in that this insatiable need to fill what's missing is woefully inadequate even for the biggest spaces and brightest lights ever shown.

they haven't seen any LOTR yet. My 4th grade teacher read the Hobbit aloud to the class, so I figured maybe the 2 Hobbit movies were tamer than the other 3?

La grande bellezza / The Great Beauty (2013) - Jep Gambardella has seduced his way through the lavish nightlife of Rome for decades, but after his 65th birthday and a shock from the past, Jep looks past the nightclubs and parties to find a timeless landscape of absurd, exquisite beauty.

This is my favorite film of 2013. star star star star star

Probably, except for the fighting is about the same (Violence wise). It's more run for your lives kind of movie.

Nadja (1994) - Members of a dysfunctional family of vampires are trying to come to terms with each other, in the wake of their father's death. Meanwhile, they are being hunted by Dr. Van Helsing and his hapless nephew.

It has many flaws, but I enjoy watching this quirky indie around the holidays. I forgot Mad Men's Jared Harris had a starring role. star star star
