Frances Ha - 4/5 - I'm a little surprised at just how much I enjoyed this. It treads over a lot of things that could seem like generic indie film cliches (Woody-isms, aimless kooky twenty-somethings, mumbling bearded hipsters), but I thought it was fun & funny & completely enjoyable.

King kelly 3.5/5

I don't know why I remembered Manhatten by Woody several times when I saw the film, it makes you wanna live in black & white, the Woody-isms indeed, a nice story & concept, one of the year's finest.

I am currently obsessed with this movie.

When I first saw it a few years ago, I may have had a small complaint about the ending, but otherwise, great film.

All Is Lost (2013) - After a collision with a shipping container at sea, a resourceful sailor finds himself, despite all efforts to the contrary, staring his mortality in the face.

I gave this an extra half-star due to degree of difficulty. It's not easy for an actor to carry a film literally by himself. star star star star 1/2

*** out of 5. Decent little thriller. The premise is very interesting. For one day a year (12 hours), folks can do whatever illegal shit they wanna do, including murkin' people. That would be some crazy ass shit. doh! Dumb ass kid lets some random dude in distress into Ethan Hawke's family's supposedly inpenetrable house during the night and some purgers threaten to come in after him. The ending is a little weird and renders the film idiotic, but it's not a terrible time-killer. thumbs up!

For all time I am with you, you are with me.

Thor: the Dark World

Just gonna say that I am not a fan of the character or story of Thor really. I only went to see this to satisfy my obsession with Tom Hiddleston. He was fantastic, the rest of the movie was meh... 2.5 stars

Carrie (the remake)

I only went because I had free tix the special preview screening.
Cinema was only a third full.

I know Julianne Moore is so great and all but after this I'm tempted to put her and Chloe Moretz on my shitlist. Had enough of them.

2/5

The Best Man Holiday (2013) Poster

The Best Man Holiday

***1/2 out of ****

A group of college friends reuinite 15 years after the prequel film to celebrate Christmas. But can they retain the holiday spirit when unfinished business and new challenges rear their ugly heads?

Gorgeous, cheerful and, therefore, all too rare depiction of 40-something upper middleclass Black America. Great to see characters who are for the most part successful, functional and, ultimately, in love with one-another, even amid their own quirks and insecurities.

The central conflict may be a bit heavy-handed for a Chrismas comedy, but writer/director Malcolm Lee makes smart use of the gifted ensemble's comic relief, particularly that of Terrence Howard. Monica Calhoun deserves an award for an amazingly arresting Mia. And Morris Chestnut? drool

I'm like that too. smile I'm watching more movies again so this will be a place to log them. smile

I might bring Wadjda down to 3 stars, but the fact that it's the first film out of Saudi Arabia AND it was made by a woman (double whammy!!) gives it the extra point.

Last night we saw "Homefront" with Jason Statham and James Franco. LOVED IT. Here are several reasons why YOU should go see what I believe is the feel-good movie of the Thanksgiving season:

1. Jason Statham kicks the absolute crap out of James Franco. Honestly, you don't need any more reasons.
2. Jason Statham kicks the absolute crap out of the same three guys TWICE.
3. Jason Statham kicks the crap out of a bunch of other guys.
4. Jason Statham kicks the absolute crap out of James Franco. Really, that's worth the price of admission.
5. James Franco gives the performance of his career. No one can get the crap kicked out of him like Franco can. Oscar buzz, for sure
6. No good guy dies, and all the bad guys die except for two
7. The bad guys that don't die are: (1) James Franco, who does get the absolute crap kicked out of him; and (2) a meth chick
8. Three characters that started out as stupid, wretched, mean rednecks end up as stupid, wretched, but ultimately good-hearted rednecks. It will bring a tear to your eye
9. A tear is brought to the eye of a third-grader as he transforms from bully to good kid
10. Sylvester Stallone wrote this all by himself. What more could you ask for? Well, there is this:
11. Winona Ryder and Kate Bosworth are in this movie and I am not sure who played what part, or even if either of them were the meth head mother of the third-grade bully. Whoever played that part better start clearing space on her mantle for an Oscar. She was awesome

12. The ending is so badass that I cannot give it away here. But suffice to say, it is freaking AWESOME and I hope that they film what happens after Danny T. gets out of jail. Honestly, this movie has the most badass, kickass, HELL YEAH ending of any movie I've seen in a long, long time.

This movie is the perfect movie to tide you over until "Expendables 3" hits the screens. Go see it.

If everyone doesn't rush out and watch a movie that Jers rated 6 out of a possible 5, then you have only yourself to blame.

The Mirror (1975) - A dying man in his forties remembers his past. His childhood, his mother, the war, personal moments and things that tell of the recent history of all the Russian nation.

I had to watch this one twice to decipher what was going on. There's awesome stuff in here, but like Tarkovsky's Andrei Rublev, it's definitely not for everybody. star star star star
