I read the book and liked it. Not one of Stephen King's best, and a little disjointed at times, but I heard the movie sucks ass! I just read a review of it and it said that the movie had just about every single genre of film that there ever was, all packed into one. And that's not a good thing. I would rent it though.

The book was decent but I don't see how it could be made into a decent movie. Most of the reviews have panned it although I saw a review in Time Out that said it was so bad it was good. It may be a really good bad movie instead of just a bad movie.
I would like to see it just to see the shit weasels.

I was actually thinking this as I read it. In the beginning, yeah, I could see maybe a movie in it. But then it just got too weird and internal, most of it going on inside his head and all that.

I like the shit weasels though!

The movie looks an AWFUL lot like John Carpenter's The Thing and it's earlier predecessor. Is it, in fact, close?

no.
More like Alien.
With a twist on Invasion of the Bodysnatchers.
A shade of To Kill A Mockingbird.
But not The Thing.
No unfrozen aliens morphing into gooey shapes.

I went to a sneak preview of it on Tuesday. Now, I must state that I did read the book first, so I was a bit predjudiced. I enjoyed the first half of the film, which followed the book to a "T", but the second half unraveled, leaving out much of the book's mystical charm. The altered ending of the film completely ruined the impact of the story (and missed the point of the book entirely). Complete dissapointment all the way around.

The only redeeming thing was getting to see the Animatrix short, The Final Flight Of The Osiris after the film ran.

Dreamcatcher sucked shit. It was stupid from beginning to end.

The Animatrix was the only good part of the experience.

Sneak into a screening, don't pay money just to see the short (remember, only you can prevent sequels).

The Animatrix short was brief, but sweet. The animation was done by the same studio that did Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within and the look was very similar. The story is rather thin, but it is visually quite stunning. From what I've heard, this short actually has the weakest storyline out of all of them, so I really look forward to seeing the rest.

Definitely. If you're just dying to experience the story, pick up King's book. King is very aware of the elements that he borrowed from other, classic Sci-Fi, and makes frequent reference to them. In many ways, his book is an homage to those Sci-Fi/Horror tales of the past. The film lacks any of these elements, unfortunately.
