Tom Cruise: Why the hate?

I'm a fan of Tom Cruise's movie career.

Most of his work I've enjoyed over the years.

I've heard quite a few people over the years say that they despise the man and his work.

Can anyone tell why that is?

I enjoy his acting. I dont know him personally, but i very much dislike how he pushes scientology out there as if its a valuable, helpful organization; like its a. healthy organization to belong to.

Just membership alone is damaging to ones character imo .

My issue with TC is that I think at best hes mediocre, honestly the only movie I think he was good in was Risky Business, but the self importance and hype turns me off. Plus his beliefs on mental illness is bonkers and that's part of Scientology.

Oh and hes annoying as hell.

I'm also a fan of Tom's movies. I think he makes good choices and I've never seen a movie with him that was bad. Most are very good.

As for the man - I think he's caught up in a whack religion. This has been his downfall IMO.

I think he was very good in:

Born On The 4th Of July

Rainman

Magnolia

Risky Business

Also very funny in cameos in:

Tropic Thunder

Austin Powers

His movies are usually at least entertaining if nothing else. He's a good action star as well. I hate scientology but don't give a rat's ass that he belongs to that group.

Every role though is Tom Cruise as <insert character>. Ive never walked out of a TC movie having been lost in a performance of his. I mean half way thru Julia & Julie, Meryl stops being Meryl and become Julia Child. Now I know thats a high bar for TC to bear, but I don't think I ever seen him lost in a character.

I'm guessing the tie to Scientology puts a damper on his record. That said, he's only impressed me with a few film roles. My favorite featuring him was probably A Few Good Men (though Jack Nicholson, it could be argued, completely stole the show with his whole "you can't handle the truth" speech in the film).

Yeah I don't really care that he's a Scientologist, it's the stupid shit he says because of it.

I don't mind Tom as an actor and from what I've heard, he's very good to his fans. I give him kudos for that. He seems to be a genuinely pleasant / nice person. However, the Scientology bit has gone WAY OVER the top. It's become obsessive and not in a healthy way. It overshadows even his own personality. Many of the things he goes on about in interviews is just downright crazy stuff (Scientology related) that's way off in left field somewhere. Unfortunately, he comes across as brainwashed to me.

I don't think America "hates" Tom

this country probably thinks of him as a weird (fake mega-smile and all), reclusive and slighty misogynistic celebrity...

the guy, like any other movie star/celebrity, is overprivileged-overpaid, but at least he doesn't pretend to be a leftist hero or something like that; he makes movies, and he gets millions of dollars for it, period.

crazy world indeed, but that doesn't make him evil/assholish in my book, society creates people like him and we're all guilty, since I quite like at least five of his films: Rain Man, Mission Impossible, Last Samurai, Collateral, War of the Worlds

I also respect the fact that, although he's definitely handsome, he has an edge/attitude, he's not a bland pretty boy, not then, not now...

I don't think America hates Tom either. If America hates Tom, that's news to me. I've never heard anyone that I know say they hate Tom Cruise. Quite the opposite as far as his acting goes.

As far as Tom's looks, I've heard several women say they think Tom is a good looking guy. I think Tom is a handsome guy as well.

I refuse to watch ANY of his films. Everything lazy said is right on. He's as annoying as his boyfriend Will Smith, another cat whose films I ignore.

I don't understand all the hate towards him either. I've always liked most of his movies and think he's a versatile actor as well...from Rainman to Valkyrie. He can do drama, comedy and action very well. I don't really pay attention to when he speaks about the whole scientology thing so I guess that's why it doesn't affect me. shrug

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I never pay attention to anything he says lol lol...I actually don't follow his interviews or quotes or anything, so I only hear about it like 3 weeks afrter the fact. And then I tend to laugh, shake my head, and completely forget about it 8 minutes later. I'm that way with almost every celebrity...don't follow them, don't read their interviews, don't give a shit about what they say (unless it ends up being completely offensive or dangerously wacky). Can't remember the last time I read a Prince interview lol.

Then again, I'm that way with a lot of my relatives as well lol neutral...and my relatives have said some reee-got-damn-diculous shit over the years, bless their hearts lol mushy...

Well clerly, along with being a good actor, hes a biologist and a bio-chemist as well. I wonder where his degrees r from. And if he was passionate about learning he would advocate for scientology membership and services being free. Make a system like khan academy for the scientology cciriculum ...nope...no $ in that. Aaarrrggghhh...scientology angers me on so many levels.

He's okay, and has done a nice bunch of movies. But he kind of seems like he's trying to hard at times. He's not entirely believable from an emotional standpoint.

And as a person, he still seems like he is acting. He's just so damn pumped all the time (much like his buddy Will Smith) that you just want to punch him or puke or something.

I've wondered the same thing. The thing on Oprah, I admired. The man was in love and was proud of it! I took major flack in a class at UPENN full of Army soldiers. Made this Air Force guy seem "fancy" but I have to admire him for doing what he did. Passion is beautiful!

I personally didn't really buy it. It just looked staged. I'm sure he was probably happy but who knows? It surely was funny though. lol

I watch his movies and I enjoy them, including this last one. But I've hardly ever seen him personally in interviews, so I was under the impression it was the whole jumping on the couch on Oprah that got people, especially women, not liking him so much anymore, the whole getting overly excited about dumping the old wife in exchange for the brand new shiny new wife. shrug I don't know. I still watch his movies, I just don't watch him too closely, he's cute and all but he really doesn't register on my radar. Plus he just strikes me as being really overly intense and tightly strung, not my cup of tea.
