Computer hard drives question

I just got an alert stating, "The disk that your backup is saved on doesn't have enough free space".

Here are the current contents of my hard drives:

Obviously, I know fuck-all about computers, so I would greatly appreciate your help in rectifying this situation.

Could it be a problem with the way my computer's "partitioned"? Are my backup settings wrong? I don't understand why the C drive has 526 GB free, but the "backup" drive only has 3.54. confuse

Have you checked how much free space was eating up? That could be what's wrong with it. My laptop did the same to me about six years ago with a pop up saying my disk space was too low.

Plus is your C drive used in the NTFS file system and the D drive in the FAT file system? FAT eats a lot of free disk that NTFS doesn't.

I think the org is one of the best places to get some sound computer related advice. There are some really computer savvy guys here on the org (like Imago) who often help people out without the usual condescending tone you´re often confronted with on most other websites. wink

How to Delet Old Back Up Files in Windows 7

Its better for me to provide you with a link than try to type it out... you know my typing is suspect.

Ace did you burn a system restore disc(s) for your computer when you first bought it? Have you backed up your system (data) as you've gone along?

What you see isn't unusual...

Windows Complete PC backup(system image) backup creates a full backup and then needs space for approximately 10 incrementals before it starts overwriting. This provides you with options to restore to various points in time. The Data backups require your intervention to manage as the Windows data backup tool is designed to provide the user full control over those files.

I'm guessing that whatever you're using to do your backups is creating new backups on D all the time and not overwriting any old ones, seeing as you've only used 153GB of your C drive and your D drive is totally full - that's only 3.54 MB left on it - not even enough room for another Prince song (well, maybe Sister or Orgasm, but nothing longer than that).

So I'm speculating here but I would guess that yes, your backup settings need looking at, there may be a setting where you can enter a date or time period when backups expire.

What are you using for backups? If I am familiar with the backup system you use I may be able to help (and if I'm not I can research it for you).

Alternatively, have a look at what's on your D drive and start deleting old shit.

All of you guys are awesome. Thank you for your replies!

AsylumUtopia:

That was my suspicion, as well. As far as I understand it, everything is backing up to the second hard drive in the laptop. I occasionally back up to a Clickfree external, but - of course - that has nothing to do with the issue here.

Go to "My Computer" and just click on your C and D drives. Look on the left, it should tell you what's your file system. Which is what I meant to say. Not disk drive types. lol geek

I wondered because I know D drive is not really used much for backup. You probably have to transfer your files to a flash drive. Do you have one?

Yes. But shouldn't deleting some of the older backups do the trick?

Yeah but it would be better to transfer. It'll probably bring back more free space.
