Is NC-17 Needed Anymore? Pssh what is even the point for NC-17 rating anymore? on prime-time TV shows like Fringe you could see peoples faces melted off and body parts trampled Cannes Hit ‘Blue Is the Warmest Color’ Gets NC-17 Rating; Watch the TrailerPosted on Wednesday, August 21st, 2013 by Angie Han Abdellatif Kechiche‘s Blue Is the Warmest Color drew raves upon raves at Cannes this year, for its tender, intimate portrayal of two young women (Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux) falling in love. But it also raised some eyebrows thanks to its graphic sex scenes. It’s no surprise, then, that the MPAA has stamped the drama with an NC-17 for its U.S. release. But rather than trim the movie for an R or release it without a rating at all, American distributor Sundance Selects will put Blue Is the Warmest Color in theaters with the restrictive rating intact. Hit the jump to find out why, and to get a peek at the first international trailer. The move makes Blue Is the Warmest Color, which opens October 25, the first NC-17 release of the year. The last picture to hit theaters with that rating was William Friedkin’s Killer Joe in 2012. Sundance Selects/IFC Films president Jonathan Sehring explained the decision in a statement:
While Blue Is the Warmest Color got the NC-17 here due to “explicit sexual content,” it’s been treated very differently by cultures with more relaxed views about sensuality and nudity. In its native France, the romance received a “12″ rating, indicating that it is inappropriate viewing for moviegoers under 12. To get an idea of what has the MPAA so hot and bothered, check out the international trailer below. It’s all in French with no subtitles, alas, but you get the gist.

Full-Frontial nudity is still NC-17 material. This also applies to graphic sex scenes on the same level as softcore porn.

I just think that it is silly to have a rating like this still around when you can anything and everything on TV or in an R rated movie. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Texas Chainsaw Massacre is rated R and shows very very little blood. The South Park movie was originally going rated NC-17 for the song that said "shut your fucking face motherfucker" but because they changed it to "shut your fucking face uncle-fucker" they got an R rating. Movie ratings never make any sense. If anything they just show how our society accepts violence more than sex and nudity. I'm glad France is allowing 12 year olds to see it. 13 year olds can watch big budget, violent, action movies whenever they want in the U.S. so why can't they see two women messing around?

It's a double standards on the part of the MPAA.

The original 1974 version of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was more controversial than the remake/rebooted version. And even then, the original was still rated R.

Ratings in the US are voluntary. So I am not sure what the issue is? Also for the few that do not know NC-17 replaced X to end confusion over the unrated (by the MPAA) porn movies.
I do not think a penis or a vag shot is a automatic NC-17. I would agree that some of the decisions made by the MPAA are not always consistent. Check out the movie "this film not yet rated. " (on netflix)
Oh and in the OP it sounds like there was nudity in Breaking Bad....that is not true. As its content: it is on cable so it doesn't have the same regulations as NBC or other broadcast networks. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

NC-17 means no way in hell will they get to see it. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

Ex-Moderator | The point of the rating is to inform parents of material they may find objectionable for their children to see. That's really all. Even tv shows have ratings and warnings now, so it's not a matter of where it's available. |

They had to tame Purple Rain down to avoid the dreaded X. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

It helps to an extent. Though I guess it's a pain in the butt to filmmakers. The lines are becoming blurred. I guess there will come a time when folks will put out whatever they want and the consumer will just have to muttle through as best they can.

There is a scene in the Purple Rain trailer with Prince laying down in some hay and Apollonia on top of him (cowgirl) but it's not in the movie.

In the original draft of the transcript for Purple Rain (original title: Dreams), The Kid tries to rape Apollonia in the middle of their fight.
