Is NC-17 Needed Anymore?

Pssh what is even the point for NC-17 rating anymore? on prime-time TV shows like Fringe you could see peoples faces melted off and body parts trampled

On Breaking Bad which doesn't even air at 9... you can see boobs, gore, ass, sex etc. You can see nearly everything on TV nowadays so why are graphic sex scenes warranted for an NC-17 rating in 2013?

Also on that note... is the MPAA still afraid of showing penis in film? if i recall if they show it in a comedy it alright... but if they show it in a sex scene it is NC-17 material.

Cannes Hit ‘Blue Is the Warmest Color’ Gets NC-17 Rating; Watch the Trailer

Blue Is the Warmest Color

Abdellatif Kechiche‘s Blue Is the Warmest Color drew raves upon raves at Cannes this year, for its tender, intimate portrayal of two young women (Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux) falling in love. But it also raised some eyebrows thanks to its graphic sex scenes.

It’s no surprise, then, that the MPAA has stamped the drama with an NC-17 for its U.S. release. But rather than trim the movie for an R or release it without a rating at all, American distributor Sundance Selects will put Blue Is the Warmest Color in theaters with the restrictive rating intact. Hit the jump to find out why, and to get a peek at the first international trailer.

The move makes Blue Is the Warmest Color, which opens October 25, the first NC-17 release of the year. The last picture to hit theaters with that rating was William Friedkin’s Killer Joe in 2012. Sundance Selects/IFC Films president Jonathan Sehring explained the decision in a statement:

This is a landmark film with two of the best female performances we have ever see on screen. The film is first and foremost a film about love, coming of age and passion. We refuse to compromise Kechiche’s vision by trimming the film for an R rating, and we have every confidence that Blue Is the Warmest Color will play in theaters around the country regardless.

Sehring dismissed concerns that the NC-17 would keep Blue Is the Warmest Color from finding a receptive audience. “An NC-17 rating no longer holds the stigma it once did, and we look forward to bringing this unforgettable film to audiences nationwide,” he wrote. “We believe this film will leave a lasting imprint as the Last Tango in Paris for a whole new generation.”

While Blue Is the Warmest Color got the NC-17 here due to “explicit sexual content,” it’s been treated very differently by cultures with more relaxed views about sensuality and nudity. In its native France, the romance received a “12″ rating, indicating that it is inappropriate viewing for moviegoers under 12.

To get an idea of what has the MPAA so hot and bothered, check out the international trailer below. It’s all in French with no subtitles, alas, but you get the gist.

Full-Frontial nudity is still NC-17 material. This also applies to graphic sex scenes on the same level as softcore porn.

I just think that it is silly to have a rating like this still around when you can anything and everything on TV or in an R rated movie.

So a movie like This Is The End can show tits, a giant demon dick, tons of of drug use and Michael Ceras ass being rimmed.. and it gets an R? but a movie that shows a graphic sex scene in a drama is too much?

I just never go that mentality as comedy films seem to be able to have dicks, vaginas, boobs, ass as long as it is for ''comedy'' but if it is for a drama then it is extreme.

Also a lot more people have cable nowadays and a show like Spartacus has tons of dicks and crazy sex every episode lol

Texas Chainsaw Massacre is rated R and shows very very little blood. The South Park movie was originally going rated NC-17 for the song that said "shut your fucking face motherfucker" but because they changed it to "shut your fucking face uncle-fucker" they got an R rating. Movie ratings never make any sense. If anything they just show how our society accepts violence more than sex and nudity. I'm glad France is allowing 12 year olds to see it. 13 year olds can watch big budget, violent, action movies whenever they want in the U.S. so why can't they see two women messing around?

The original 1974 version of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was more controversial than the remake/rebooted version. And even then, the original was still rated R.

Ratings in the US are voluntary. So I am not sure what the issue is? Also for the few that do not know NC-17 replaced X to end confusion over the unrated (by the MPAA) porn movies.

I do not think a penis or a vag shot is a automatic NC-17. I would agree that some of the decisions made by the MPAA are not always consistent.

Check out the movie "this film not yet rated. " (on netflix)

My favorite myth about X rated movies is that Scarface was originally rated X and was edited to get an R. Now it was given an X but they fought it and they did make some edits but in the end the original cut, the cut that was given an X, was given an R and that it the cut we all know. (well there are some alternative shots for TV that are funny but that is a different issue)

Oh and in the OP it sounds like there was nudity in Breaking Bad....that is not true. As its content: it is on cable so it doesn't have the same regulations as NBC or other broadcast networks.

yeahthat

The ratings are still necessary. You have to remember that it's not so much for adults but rather for kids.

If my kids decide they want to go and watch a movie (without me) I need the rating to determine whether or not it's an appropriate film.

Anytime a movie is "R" rated, I will watch it myself (or confer with someone who's already seen it) FIRST, simply because there's such a disparity in what "R" covers.

Violence nowadays isn't such an issue...society is so inundated with violent imagery that the scenes in "Indiana Jones: Temple of Doom" which prompted PG-13 (the part where the shaman rips the heart out...made me CRINGE at the time) is considered tame by kids today.

TV is the same as the big screen. I have my cable box locked, so that if they want to watch a movie that's rated R, I have to enter a code to allow it.

I like the fact that they'll say; "Rated R for scenes of graphic nudity/violence/language/etc., etc,." so that we know WHY it gets that rating.

NC-17 means no way in hell will they get to see it. hmph!

The point of the rating is to inform parents of material they may find objectionable for their children to see. That's really all. Even tv shows have ratings and warnings now, so it's not a matter of where it's available.

NC17 was created to differentiate movies with actual plots that might happen to have extremely explicit scenes from porn who had taken over the X (and eventually XXX) ratings. In that sense it probably still serves its purpose.

They had to tame Purple Rain down to avoid the dreaded X.

It helps to an extent. Though I guess it's a pain in the butt to filmmakers. The lines are becoming blurred. I guess there will come a time when folks will put out whatever they want and the consumer will just have to muttle through as best they can.

There is a scene in the Purple Rain trailer with Prince laying down in some hay and Apollonia on top of him (cowgirl) but it's not in the movie.
