Let's talk Minnesota. Y not, the famous guitar

player hails from there. I have never been there. I have family there, & my relatives started moving there 35 years ago. My 2 brothers moved out there about 7 years ago, & they just seem to be really impressed with the state. I would have never imagined any of my siblings moving there of all places. One of my brothers came to visit my state today, & he gave me a Minnesota tshirt. Both of my brothers have been practically begging me to come for a visit. I am ready. It seems so many in my family have been there except me! So maybe I will go back with him & his lady & stay a week or so. I'd really prefer to go this time of year, instead of winter.. Anyone else have thoughts on Minnesota? jet

I've lived in MN my whole life. It is pretty great here. Awesome lakes and bike trails, good restaurants, nice people (for the most part).

Mosquitoes, never-ending road construction/bad drivers, and crappy winter weather are my only complaints.

If you are thinking of coming, do so soon, as winter is NOT the time to come to MN!!

Born and raised here in the Land of 10,000 lakes. I love MN but I'm open to living elsewhere (and have lived elsewhere). It's a lovely state with lots of good things going on.

*

Winter may not be the time to visit but it can be really beautiful too. wink It's funny because winter used to bother me more when I was younger. As I've grown older, I've learned to embrace it and enjoy getting all bundled up and heading outside. I much prefer the extreme cold to extreme heat.

I´ve been to Minnesota (Minneapolis and St.Paul) several times and I loved it. Apart from the whole Prince thing, the reason why I liked it so much were the nice people, the peaceful atmosphere, the hospitality, the lakes and the overall friendly atmosphere.

Also, I wanted to get to know the heartland of America first instead of visiting the usual touristic places such as NYC, Miami and L.A.

I love Minnesota. Nothing but fond memories and two friends who are dear to me.

Never been there. It snows there I heard. I have no plans of ever visiting there when it's snowing. Of course I never planned to visit Cleveland when it was snowing either, plans change sometimes.

You ought to go. Seeing someplace different is fun. And you have family there for gawd sakes. Free room and board.

Minnesota quality of life better than most

Minnesota's Four Season Sport by Paul Weimer via the MPR Flickr pool

Minnesota’s Four Season Sport by Paul Weimer via the MPR Flickr pool

Minnesota lags only behind Vermont and Hawaii when it comes to quality of life.

The North Star State has something to offer almost everyone. Enjoy the natural beauty of the North Woods or the cosmopolitan sophistication of the Twin Cities. And everyone, it seems, is “Minnesota Nice” — so much so that the crime rate is among the nations lowest. The home of the famed Mayo Clinic is one of Americas healthiest states, and the environment is among the cleanest. But if you’re not a fan of winter, beware. With an average annual temperature of just 41.2 degrees Fahrenheit, Minnesota is one of Americas coldest states. But they’ll tell you — nicely — that they know how to adapt.”

via MSN Real Estate.

But don’t take MSN’s word for it, a group of Minnesota Redditors are chewing over the question: ‘Why do you live in Minnesota?’

“As someone who is typing this from a park bench while taking a break from a bike ride, there’s my reason,” writes igacek. “The weather is beautiful, we have great parks and lakes to ride through/around, and bike paths are amazing! The winters are worth the beautiful spring/summer/fall! … Also all my friends are here.”

One of the top comments gives Old Man Winter a big fat hug.

“Winters are their own bit of awesome. Winter sports, skiing to the cabin, camping, etc. Don’t be cooped up and get cabin fever like the other nerds,” writes worduphomefry.

“I was born here. I plan on dying here. More specifically, I plan on dying either from the heat (even though it’s really the humidity that’ll getcha), the cold (even though it’s really the windchill that you ought to worry about), or hearing people complain about them,” writesMN.

“The parks.. The lakes.. The woodlands.. This state is a sportsman’s dream,” writes Kickd. “The winter is cold but it brings a great beauty and respect to this place.”

I have heard some more things about MN. My brothers lady says that lots of people ride bikes there (good thing), w/backpacks in tow. & also, that the police close the streets off downtown at 2am, which is the time the clubs close. Another good thing, guess not wanting many problems after folks have been partying.

I had a convo w/my future sis in law. She is from Chicago. So I said to her, well it gets pretty cold in winter time in chicago right? She says. "yeah, but the snow eventually melts in Chicago, in MN, snow just piles on top of snow, & it can get as cold as -20 degrees" or colder. ha! My brother had me rolling w/laughter, putting on a demonstartion of how people walk down the street during winter there.. I must experience that type of cold at least once lol

COOL, didn't know that. I was reading my local paper here in the South, & I noticed the article was based out of Minneapolis, Univ of Minn Amplatz Children's Hospital. . A 7 yr old boy has a rare connective tissue disease, & the doctors there unlocked the boys DNA so his team could cut out a letter in his faulty genome & replace it with the correct one. Pretty impressive work being done there.

Your post reminds me of something my mother shared about Minn. She visited there for the 1st time about a year ago for about 2 weeks. She came back & told me she joined the "life is good club" while out there lol.. It's all I heard about for a good month! She didn't cook, others did, either in the kitchen or on the grill, & day in & out, they gathered. I'm sure wine & beer were in play. Some of these folks had to be retirees! lol

Not bad! 3rd on the list.. How come I didn't realize the famed Mayo Clinic was in Minn?? doh!.. I've been informed that they keep Minn streets clean. & there's that word 'bike ride', yup, hear there are many bike lanes there. Lol @ "I plan on dying either from the heat/humidity or the cold/windchill or complaints about them"..Minn does sound like a sportsmans dream (fishing in all of those lakes!, skiing etc.

Ok, my big bro & his lady have been here for about 5/5& a half days. They came here from Minn for a fam reunion. She's from Chicago. They met in Minn. I'm just meeting her, & she seems tolerable enough lol. She told me yesterday that she wants to marry my brother. I told her today that she is more woman than I am!!... Notice I didn't say smarter!!...... He is 51, & acts 20!! That is NOT cute to me! He has gotten on my nerves in all sorts of ways since being here!!.. absolut wacky smoker weed, which means he keeps misplacing things rolleyes, he's also VERY LOUD at times, buffoonish (i actually told him that's how he was acting, I just couldn't hold it in)... So, there is NO WAY that I will go 4 or 5 states across country & stay with him for any length of time!!... & my other brother called my cell from Minn 2 times 2day, leaving interesting messages, about he'll be contacting me in the near future about something? huh?? LOL, not sure if Minn gained 2 upstanding citizens.., BUT!!!, I'm so happy they DO NOT live near me!!! So my saga to finally visit Minn continues.... disbelief the kind of folks walking around on this planet boggles my mind on a regular....... Oh, thanks for responding each of you!, was fun & interesting.

You seem big on the bike riding. I ride my bike all over when the weather is nice. Minneapolis has been named the best bike city in the US for a few years now. We have tons of dedicated lanes and trails and more are being built all the time.

We're always named in the top 5 of lists, most educated, most literate, low unemployment, healthy, every residence in Minneapolis is within 6 blocks of a green space, great music and arts scene, second only to NYC for theatre seats per capita... On and on and on. It's a great place to live. I've been traveling the world and there are certianly other places I can see myself living but I have a feeling I'll always come back. I will say the winters do get tough sometimes and when I get old I just may have to winter somewhere else. lol

Wow, I clicked on that buzfeed article 2 hours ago, & i'm just getting back 2 the org! Once I looked that article over, I read many of the comments of folks debating where the Missippi River begins..& then I moved on 2 other articles on buzzfeed, which I don't normally visit. That discussion about the Miss River got pretty intense! lol. Some things I found interesting about the list are, 'the hockey hircut' lol, didn't realize General Mills was located in MN, as I am a fan of some of their cereals, I didn't know Jennifer Biel is from MN, Tator tot dish?? sounds looks yummy, Target is headquartered there, interesting, the juicy Lucy burger, lol, how can Prince resist it? Then again, I'm not big on burgers either, & speaking of P, I was wondering when I would see him on the list... I guess they saved the best for last. I agree with some of the others, some of the things listed seemed like just fluff, & maybe they could have included other things or people. But yea, can't wait to visit (on my own). I'll post about it when that happens.. They showed a pic of the Miss River at night, what a sight, gorgeous!
