i didn't realise that & my bloke confirms that strawberries & rasperries need a frost/ cold spell of weather to ensure sweet fruit.

& that would explain why we can buy strawberries year round in uk from the supermarkets.. they look huge, red & amazing but taste like shit & of course they are grown in warm climates.

i'm picking masses of lovely rasperries at the mo, i'd share them with you if i could!

i think it's proper name is persimmon fruit. It says from south africa on the packet i have.. far too exotic to be grown in the UK

Oh, okay. I've heard of persimmons. My mother, who was from Alabama, told me she used to pick them off the tree in AL. I've never had one. They don't sell them in stores around here. If it's anything like a plum, then I know I'd love it because I love plums. Cherries are another favorite of mine. Those great big dark red ones, almost black, are my favorite, although the reddish/yellow ones are good, too.

Watermelon is good, but I don't particularly care for those little round seedless ones. They don't have much flavor. Give me one of those old fashioned oblong ones with lots of seeds. They tend to be sweeter. I like to eat it ice cold with salt sprinkled over it. Cantaloupes and honeydews are good, but they cramp my stomach sometime.

When I was a kid growing up in New Jerdey, there was a mulberry tree growing at the playground. The berries were nice and sweet, but it's a messy tree. If the berries fell on a car, they would make a mess.

Blackberries are good if you can find them growing wild. Blueberries are not at all sweet fresh. Raspberries are a little tart to me, and the seeds are a nuisance.

They eat apples, strawberries, plums and bannanas. That's it.

So I was at the supermarket yesterday and I bought strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. I want to make one of those "parfait" things or something to get them to like it.

I cheat and make smoothies and slushies with a lot of fruit and veggies this time of year. Mostly berries, melons and spinach though. My son likes them, he's kind of wishie washie about fruits.

smoothies are a great suggestion! yogurt (or ice cream) milk & honey + fruit in the blender.. buy some fancy straws & watch the kids sup up!

Watermelon and Strawberry Lemonade

Original recipe makes 2 quarts

8 cups cubed seeded watermelon

• 1 cup white sugar

• 2 cups water
  
  

  Directions

  1. Combine the watermelon, strawberries, lemon juice, sugar, and water in a blender. Blend until smooth.

  • 2 cups white wine (cold)
  • 12 cup liqueur (melon, midori)
  • 2 cups cranberry juice (white)
  • 1 14 cups watermelon (balls)
  • 1 14 cups honeydew balls
  • 1 14 cups cantaloupe (balls)
  • lime zest (long)
  • 355 mls ginger ale
  • 1 cube ice

I'm going to Seattle next week, that's supposed to be raspberry capital of USA - I'm hoping to get some black raspberries!

The black raspberries were on sale at the market 2nd week of july. Let's hope they still have them.

I was in Walmart last week, and I didn't see any fresh produce. Maybe I overlooked it, but I generally don't shop at Walmart because the store is always so damn junky! They have shit piled everywhere, all up and down the aisles, which makes it difficult to maneuver with a big shopping cart. Their food prices are very competitive, however. I noticed ice cream was almost a whole dollar cheaper there. Of course, the days of a full one half gallon of prepackaged ice cream are gone, but Bryer's is usually one of the higher priced brands in other stores.

Picked these in the backyard...

Strawberries from the supermarket often taste very bland, and you never know how many people touched them before you bought them. I buy mine from a special strawberry vendor....organic, a little bit pricey but VERY sweet and tasty.

just like regular watermelon butt yellow and very sweet....not too sweet though...
