I'm not trying to be a smart ass or anything, but The Shining actually was released in 1980.

Other than many of the ones already listed:

Bill Jack!

And I will add, it is not that movies then were any better than ones now... it is just the filter of time gives us that illusion. Same goes for other art forms.

Saturday Night Fever - Even if you strip away the disco music, it's still a good coming-of-age film.

Across 110th Street - Yaphet Kotto/Anthony Quinn crime drama. Dark, gritty and you actually feel sorry for the bad guys who are being hunted down.

Blazing Saddles - Awesomely un-PC and hilarious. lol

Five on The Black Hand Side - The original Barbershop, pretty much.

Hey...

Alot of my favorites have already been mentioned, but thanks to the Criterion Collection, I've discovered these gems:

Solaris (1972)

Harold and Maude (1971)

Badlands (1973)

I hope to check out their release of Sunday Bloody Sunday (1971)

Oh yes Harold and Maude forgot that one even though I have the dvd. Love the use of Cat Stevens music in the film.
