78,000 to live on Mars: Have you signed up?

78,000 people have applied to live on Mars. Up to 3,000 will make the first cut, and the 28-40 finalists will spend seven years training before 4 finally get selected for a one-way trip to live on Mars.

My bf would love it if we'd both be able to go but seeing as he has MS it's not going to happen. I don't think the health plan on Mars will be all that great.

Even if we could, I'd never go. It would be lovely ot be able to visit, but living there would get incredibly boring and tedious.

it would take fucking ages to get to work if i moved there. it takes long enough as it is. i bet amazon don't deliver either, and netflix definately isn't going to work, so fuck that

No, I couldn't imagine never seeing a tree, a bird, blue skies ever again. Now if I knew I was coming back, maybe.

I can definitely see the lure of the adventure, but spend the energy and money fixing the problems on this planet before jumping off to others.

Yeah I understand your feelings, but from what I understand the budget first is using so little of the overall budget it's only a percentage of a penny, plus that money would barely make a dent in what really are the issues cause it aint the money it's what folks are doing with the money a lot of the time. And not least the discoveries and necessary technology made by these ventures always reflect back to us ordinary people in some way.

Just remember we gave $700B just to bailout institutions not that long ago, no where near that kind of money is being spent on the space programs and technolocial advancement of the species, that put a lot of things into prespective to me. At least these type of programs reach out to educate and inspire the next generation.

Seems like a whole lot of people would gladly go though. In hopes of creating a different type of society, but isn't that how it always starts.

And their planning on it being like a reality tv show. It ain't gonna happen. But it would be interesting I guess to see how much people want to invest in such a venture. First you'd have to know how plants would grow under those conditions wouldn't you? If the human body would change so much that they'd be unable to return to Earth, how would that body's requirements change? I don't see this in 10 years too many questions. At least planet earth gravity's the same every where and you can always go outside a get a breathe of air. To be completely enclosed forever, in a pod or in a suit.

I don't think those signing up pay, I think it's outside investors, I just read mostly from the US and China.

i'm sure in the application form they will say "dead people need not apply" or something like that. hopefully they are forward thinking and say "the undead need not apply". you don't want a bunch of zombies on mars. it's bad enough with the nazis hiding on the dark side of the moon

They'd had to build the colony under ground, and far under ground.
Obviously, they are not. I can't see how they get around this
