yeah, it's proper serious documentary, just half hour long. it's not what you'd expect from HBO. it's got nothing to do with actual vice as in miami vice, it's more like pakistan and china etc. just 2 eps so far

The American Experience and the Biography Channel have some good biographies. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

i also love watching ancient aliens. it's not really a documentary, it's just these mental blokes that think aliens built the pyramids and stuff like that. the presentation is along the lines of "in 5000 years bc, aliens built the pyramids with big spaceships and stuff........ (pause).... according to ancient alien theorists"
the folk on the show are completely convinced, yet you know they are just mental. this is the main bloke

he is saying in that photo "ancient alien cocks where this big"
his haircut was actually done by ancient aliens in 5000 years bc. fact [Edited 4/13/13 15:16pm]

Speaking of aliens, does anyone remember Erich von Daniken?

You're probably not interested in the topic, but I just watched Ken Burns' Baseball documentary, and it was great.
I also watched Fat, Sick, & Nearly Dead and liked it quite a lot. The end was incredibly touching. My Legacy

he's a regular on ancient aliens as it was him that started it all with his book chariot of the gods, of which we are reminded at least 17 times each and every episode, and last weeks episode was another one dedicted to him and his book, about the third or fourth they've done. there is a documentary from the 70s which was the predecessor to the show that's interesting too, but doesn't have as flashy visuals or re-eneacments
this week they were trying to say how could vikings travel about in boots to far away places when no-one else was doing it (like how could they know what happened in them days), so of course they had to have ancient alien technology. one of them obviouly watched the marvel thor movie and thought the space bits must mean that real aliens helped real vikings as they had a bit on thors hammer, which i'm sure you can guess, is based on alien technology
one other documentary i should have mentioned was the sound city one by dave grohl, that's excellent

Yes! I've really been wanting to see that! Sorry I missed it in the theaters...I'll have to get it on DVD. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

i think the cinema release of sound city was limited, in fact very limited, as it wasa just for promo reasons maily. i think it was shown on PPV in HD. this would have stoked sales of the cd and the live shows

An episode of Ms. Marple, Alain de Botton on Status Anxiety, whilst feeling sorry for myself that Londonboy doesn't love me.

Yes, topics are well chosen.
Not very deep, but fits current culture.
Interesting topic, not to long and it's up to you if you want to elaborate or just pick up what you get served.
This one is thought provoking.

Okay, here's some more! Maybe you will watch one if you get an "itch" for a documentary again- and they will keep you from thinking about old Londonboy

There's plenty more where that came from. We're watching a documentary on China right now and about to start one on Gypsy Jazz and the legacy of Django Reinhardt. Outside of org suggestions for US shows (that I can find online), I pretty only watch documentaries on tv here

Yeah, I love it when documentaries aren't one-note, but feature a wide range of emotions. Ultimately I thought it was really uplifting. Nothing could break his sense of hope and optimism.
