when I was a college student (not living on campus btw) renting an apartment 2 train stops from uni, I would have to keep a ledger book for all income and expenses. My dad paid for me to go to college as long as I could show all my spendings on paper. My course had something like 30 contact hours (active lessons, tutorials and classes) so he didn't want me to have a part time job as WELL.
I hated it at the time. I was living on 69 cents for 3-4 days here and there
BUT
I must say, it's left me with a lot of discipline with money.
My family may be lacking in family values, but we are all excellent misers I'm the mistake you wanna make | |

If you have a grain of rice more than you need to live, than you are prospering.
----
I no longer believe that, but it was useful in helping me cope with my living conditions. Now I believe that you can give po folk a million dollars but they will still find a way to lose it all relatively quickly. You have to change your mind, or you will pass bad knowledge on to your kids.
The grain of rice stuck with me as it made me not be devastated and compare myself to others and be miserable. I will teach my kids REAL prosering though.... But I wont forget the bare neccesities [Edited 4/2/13 20:37pm] No matter the ©️, Paisley Park "official can never ™️ . He gave that to us verbally on Oprah in 1996. Everybody isn't your friend; only when things majorly happen to you, good or bad, is when you find out who your true friends are.
Everyone is going to disappoint you in some way or the other, that's life.
There's plenty of fish out in the sea.
Don't burn bridges; you may never know who you come back across again in life I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince. | |

Never be envious of anyone else. They didn't say it in those exact words but rather showed me by example. | |

My parents used to tell me all the time "Life isn't fair!" and "Sometimes in life you have to do things you don't want to do." and boy did I ever hate that. It was always the WORST possible thing they could say to me in the given moment and it always made me so upset.
Of course they were absolutely right. I just never found it comforting.
I wouldn't say that was the best advice they gave me (since the "move on" part was never explicit), simply some truth I needed to learn.
When I was little and stressed out when going to bed (worried about a test, afraid I'd have nightmares, whatever) and couldn't get to sleep for the worry, my parents would tell me to think happy things. They'd often start me off with a scenario (pretend you're going to a birthday party) or something like that and encourage me to, well, to really meditate on happy and fun things. I still do it to this day and I absolutely love that. |

Anyone's mouth cut straight across can lie.
Men and women want the same thing, they just go about it different ways.

Treat others the way you want to be treated.
Honor God with your life.
Always do the right thing. | |

Make or make do (i.e., Make the money to buy something, or make do without it).
Get a good, full night's sleep before you make any big decision.
One good friend is all you need.
It's just as easy to love a rich man as a poor one. (This was advice my mom always gave my sisters, but I see no reason I can't take it to heart too.) | |

My mom always told me to marry rich. "Beauty fades and love dies" so you may as well be taken care of.
|

My mom loves to say, "Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly runs to the bone" (always with a devilish glint in her eye). It makes me laugh. | |

My younger sister was one of the all-time great bargain shoppers. She just loooooved finding a "deal" on clothing.
One time, she came home with a huge shopping bag and our dad said, "What the hell...?!" She made the mistake of replying, "But, Dad - you won't believe how much money I saved!" He held out his hand and said, "Put all the money you saved right here." Lesson learned. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves. | |

Don't ask nobody for shit. You want something, you come to me and ask for it and if I think you should have it and can afford to give it to you, you can have it. But strangers don't owe you a damn thing and the world hates a begging ass motherfucker.

Oh, my goodness - that is my parents all over (minus the language).
My mother always told my sisters and me, "If I ever find out that you've been begging food at someone else's house, you will get a spanking like you won't believe. Never ask for food or drink - I don't want people thinking I don't feed my children."
I'm sure it was a prideful result of growing up during the Depression and WWII, but she wasn't playing. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves. | |

Treat people the way you want to be treated.
Always have your own money.
Never allow a man to even talk about hitting you.
Don't be a phony.
Being poor is no excuse for people being dirty, lowlife or ignorant.
When people show you who they are, believe them.
Mind the company you keep.
Don't carry gossip.

Mom: "How does a fish get caught?" Me: "?" Mom: "It opens its mouth." Me: "?" Mom: "Think about it for a while."
Mom: "Just because you swim, doesn't mean you'll make it to shore."
Mom: "If a man/woman hits you once, you can be damn sure they will do it again."
Mom: "A motherfucker will tell you damn near anything to get in your pants, so make those decisions based on what YOU want, not on what they are promising you."
Mom: "No glove, no love."
Mom: "I didn't raise you to do what you were told, I raised you to think for yourself!"

My maternal nana used to tell my mum 'buy cheap, buy twice' & 'when money worries come in the front door, love goes out the back'. My mum taught me many things through her words & deeds ... 'when u are with people & they are saying something ignorant/hatefull about other people/s & u dont speak up, your silence equals consent'...'the names they call women almost all have something in common ; to bring her down via her sexuality...' she also told me to think about the faeries when i was afraid to go back to sleep after a nightmare. "We just let people talk & say whatever they want 2 say. 9 times out of 10, trust me, what's out there now, I wouldn't give nary one of these folks the time of day. That's why I don't say anything back, because there's so much that's wrong" - P, Dec '15 | |
