Rumors about Johnny Gill's sexuality have been circulating for so many years that it's hard to pinpoint when exactly the gossip started.

In an interview with the Insider, the New Edition member and solo star says he's heard it all, including rumors that he was romantically involved with Eddie Murphy.

Johnny says he doesn't know why people would question his sexual orientation. "For the life of me [I] never, never understood where it came from, why it lasted as it's lasted," he says. Johnny says that before sites like Twitter and Facebook existed, fans relied on gossip magazines for information about stars.

"Whatever they say it was like that was the truth. People believe whatever it was," he added. "But I don't feel as bad anymore, because when I go on the Internet everybody's gay…I've just always been a very private person."

The singer says he's had a girlfriend for the past five years, but at the beginning of their relationship, she revealed to him that she'd heard the rumors about him and Eddie, too. Johnny reveals, "I'm like, 'Do you believe it?' She says, 'No, I just hear everybody just keeps saying,' and I said, 'Let me tell you something. Here's what we are going to do…'"

The singer says that he searched the phone book and found someone who would set him up with a lie detector test. "I wrote down questions, I made her write down questions…When the guy called back with the results and we both laying there in the bed. Tears came down…I would never want to lay next to someone that might even remotely have any doubt or question of who I am,"

In 2011, Johnny released his sixth studio album, Still Winning.

I like Johnny Gill and all and don't think he's gay, but why does he feel the need to keep bringing this up? And not only that why is he going to such EXTREME measures to prove that he isn't gay? Going through a phone book for a person to give him a lie detector test to prove to a woman he just met that he isn't gay? Who the hell does that? Then you crying yet she's been your girl for 5 years???? Johnny please

Why does he care so much about what others think about him? I think he has an insecurity problem more than anything else.

For the life of me, I don't understand why he keeps addressing the same old tired, silly rumors. He's already addressed it before. Just leave it alone. People are going to always talk. I can't think of many male R&B artists who haven't been accused of being gay at some point in their career. Get over it, Johnny. You haven't had a hit record in years and you're not known by the massess so I'm trying to figure out why people even really care about keeping the rumor going???

You dont need no lie dectector test to know if a dude is gay or not. Sleeping with them will tell you what you need to know.

He should have left it at that. Going into the "lie detector" anecdote begins to make it seem like "The lady doth protest too much, methinks", and was a bridge too far (...in my opinion). From my own perspective, he has always seemed like any other same gender loving guy I have known, who prefers to keep that information between himself and those who need to know. Personally, I could not care any less about what he and Eddie Murphy (...or anyone else, for that matter) may have done in private.

I don't know if sleeping with him tells you everything, but I definitely agree there should not be lie detectors in a relationship!

I saw this interview and Johnny seemed borderline insane.

Next, i've got to wonder about a relationship where there's enough investment and insecurity, on the one hand, to warrant a lie detector test, yet enough casualness that there'd still be sex despite the speculation.

Finally, who the hell still uses... a phone book? That alone is proof to me that Gill is straight.

That's a damn shame. I know Johnny has probably been called far worse than "gay" and I bet he didn't cry about it. Something's definately going on here that it's bothering him that much. What the fuck ever happened to "sticks and stones will hurt my bones, but names will never hurt me"?

Well Johnny did have that hit last year that was playing on R&B stations maybe he thinks that makes him relevant again

One thing that might elicit this sort of response (and I honestly hope I'm entirely off the mark here) is if Gill is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse at the hands of a male.

I know adult male abuse survivors who struggle this dramatically with their sexual identity. Bi or gay survivors sometimes are haunted by questions of whether the abuse is causal to their orientation. Hetero survivors sometimes are consumed with proving to themselves and the world-- often far beyond the point at which the world would actually care -- that their straightness has remained intact.

Any such situation must be very tough to deal with.

Ridiculous.

By calling attention to this issue and denying it with ridiculous statements,

he's implying that he would be a lesser man if he would be gay.

That just isn't right.

Not cool and will only hurt his public image.

Btw, Richard Gere is the one who really has been in denial about his sexual preference, right?

He should come out of the closet.
