Not sure how this is genius, but its nice craftsmanship to do little tweaks to something so monumentally original that was genius (at least this part of Empire Strikes Back).

They added more walkers, and cleaner images of the walkers, They also color corrected the image to a warmer more yellow tone. The original film had very pink skin tones (reddish), but this makes the tones more normal flesh color.

Of course you could argue that the original skin tone fit with the colder environment.

They also motion tracked and added little doohickey display graphics in the snowspeeder cockpit.

I like the raggedy war equipment version in the original that was all blurry. It was supposed to be a rag tag operation. I don't mind the added two legged walkers or more walkers in general but other things like skin tone and refining the binoculars starts to show possible naivity of the guy doing these tweaks in terms of concept and flavor of the original material. However these are better choices than many that Lucas himself made! If I was in charge of modiying the original, the only things I would have done to Empire Strikes Back, is improve the piss poor Wampa appearance (which they didn't do in its actual closeup debut) and fix all mismatched blacks on composites. And I don't mean Lando. But Empire has got other major problems for me. I've thought that since I saw it in 5th grade. The stacatto slow motion in the Degobah hallucination is an example of something that feels completely wrong.

well maybe with a bit more taste. But yes, a bit of the same revisionist bug going around. I have to admit, back in 1990 I did an edit of Empire and Return of the Jedi together as one 2.5 hour movie as a stronger sequel to Star Wars (which remaons my favorite for so many reasons). that was around when I got the Small Club bootleg!

Well in a couple of months the full movie will hit the interwebs. I'm sure my opinion will be validated. He built his own models, made costumes, filmed additional rebel soldiers running around in snow somewhere. He's tweaking Yoda's facial movements just ever so slightly, He's tastefully inserting this stuff from what i can tell.

I loved what he did to Star Wars, but from what i've seen of Empire, well it's another level entirely.

I can't wait to feel 10 again. lol

oh wait, I remember this. He did so many changes that were in bad taste I didn't want to see it! Changing things like:

" Vader’s eyes re-coloured to remove the red tint."

"Inside the sandcrawler 3PO's eyes blink as he stands. Fixed"

"Brightened & desaturated the sunset scene."

These are an example of just a few bad things in poor taste.

Other places, where he fixes legit errors are cool, but things like those above are just changing cool things to more generic things, and that's not cool. It's condemnable.

Bad taste? What!? Sorry but you haven't seen it, ergo you have no idea what you're really talking about. that's just YOUR opinion on art you've not really seen, you just didn't like the sound of it. Besides, your last sentence makes zero sense, you can't have it both ways. This is cool, that is not. come on now.lol

He got rid of the needless Jabba scene and fixed Han vs Greedo. Indeed Greedo now has facial expressions, many of the creatures in the cantina now have facial movements. The Battle of Yavin has extra TIE's and X-wings duking it out, Vaders eyes are now totally inline with the other films.

There is a huge list of what was fixed, yes fixed. (Chewie now gets a medal!)He just got rid of a lot of the silly shit Lucas added (Jawas swinging from Rontos etc)

Most fan edit afficianado's see this as the greatest fan edit ever. So much so, this is the go to version of Star Wars for many.

wink

I don't think you have an understanding of what I laid out in my response. But trust me, I know what I'm talking about. Let me try to explain...

Taste vs mistakes.

Do you see what's wrong with the items I listed? Those weren't mistakes. They were part of the movie and actually work well within it. And they are much loved parts of the movie which I saw many times in the theater in 1977.

On the other hand, Greedo shooting first is exactly how it already was so in the original movie, so that is why that's an okay change in this fool's "remaster". So that's not a matter of taste.

But when he changes the edit of the Ben Kenobi homestead scene, it's laughable. That's is an idiotic move to change a scene that worked beautifully and was cut and shot by award winning artists of thewir craft. I still remember the wonder of how that scene played out in the theater, and how you imagined the things they mentioned, and the incredible reveal of the light sabre.

Fixing a flawed special effect is okay as long as it's an obvious flaw that takes away from the movie. But changing colors of things unnecessarily fucking sucks, unless they were inconsistent within the movie itself. And changing happy accidents that were better in the end is a sin.

Do you see the difference in the items I listed?

Most true fans of 1977's Star Wars hate these kind of "taste" oriented revisions. It's the same reason they hated Lucas himself for meddling with it. This guy ends up doing the same thing with his horrible judgement in those instances of completely unneccesary changes.

This is an interesting "art project" that functions to show his tastes, and illustrates his scope/limitations of understanding what's good or bad about it. But I'd condemn him for proposing anything like this being superior to the orginal because some of his changes are horrible.

FYI, the true Star Wars fans don't consider anything to be canon past 1977's Star Wars. It was originally created as a stand alone movie, and is perfect in that regard. Lucas never thought he would get the financial return to actually make a sequel, much less 5 sequels. The first one is the only one he sweated.

Hey someone's going to correct the way the vocals buzz in "Little Red Corvette" or add the bassline to "When Doves Cry"! Or release "Forever in My Life" with the background vocals synced properly, not before the lead.

Those types of decisions on the part of a fan are dumb if they are declared superior.

But as an experiement, or "art project" it's all entertaining.

I know every frame of Star Wars. I could sit here and hand draw you every shot from memory. Trust me, I'm a fan.

thumbs up! Me too. I was in Luke's kitchen staring at the roof and checking out the courtyard in the hotel Sidi Dris in Tunisia just the other year. A trippy experience if ever i had one. lol

It's all ok, believe it or not i hear Adywan even has his fans at Lucasfilm. Some will like it some won't. That's life.

I admire his dedication, one guy sat at home with his computer on a mission. He's been beavering away on TESB for five years overcoming death in the family, destruction of his work, all sorts of shit. There's quite the thread on originaltrilogy.com detailing the drama and his work.

I think what he is doing qualifies as conceptual art, and it's en expression of him molding is environment, in this case the pop art of these films to his value system of what he personally likes. Now many may have that in common with him as far as taste, and I think a lot of his changes are cool, but then the other changes I don't agree with. But I do find them very interesting and entertaining. But I guess I take it personally if it's declared better, because it really isn't for some people.
