What do you do for a living? I think it's time for another heads-up. The last thread about the orgers' jobs was made a couple of years ago, and surely some things have changed since then, and some new orgers arrived.
So, what do you do for a living?
How many hours do you work?
Do you like your job? | |

I'll start:
I'm still a student of English and American Studies, but I do make my own money and spend most of my time not at university, but actually "working".
I make most of my money playing gigs with several different bands. They pay me to play keyboards and sing in their bands, sometimes also as a studio musician and to write/produce songs for them. I do all sorts of music, from rock to jazz to funk to plain pop. I also give lessons in piano, guitar and singing.
I've also got a band/project of my own, but I can't really count that one as a main income source yet.
Another thing I also do from time to time (about four times a year for two weeks each) is to test and present cars for all sorts of different car companies. I like doing that, because it's very "earthy" and completely different to the music world.
Obviously, I don't work fixed hours (which I am quite happy about), but I have at least one rehearsal a day and one lesson a day and play at least one gig every 10 days (on average).
I'm happy with the progress I'm making and I hope I can keep this up as long as possible.

I'm an IT Project Manager.
I work roughly 40 hours per week, give or take.
I like some parts of my job, sure. I've got a good management team and I work with good, smart people. And they pay me pretty well for what I do.
It's certainly not any kind of passion of mine. But it gets me by. |

I am not an engineer, but I "engineer" commercial fire alarm systems for a living. Generate plans on AutoCad. Plot them. File them with the local Fire Marshals. And other stuff associated with that.
While I still had a mortgage to pay, I'd work 50+ hours a week (that's a 40-hour workday not counting lunch + I'd work 6 hours every Saturday and stay late most days).
Nowadays I come in at 8am, leave at 5pm and stay at home with the kids on the weekends.
I like my job, and I like the company...there's room for improvement here, but overall it's a cool place to work. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

I am a senior copywriter for a large clothing company. Basically, I get women to buy clothes by making them believe a pair of pants (or a top or a dress) can change their life. And I'm really, really good at it.
It's not as sweet a gig as it used to be (what is?), but it's the thing that makes all the other things I like to do possible. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I work for a large insurance brokerage company. My father-in-law started it, and he just passed away. Now my wife runs it. I'm her best-paid file clerk.
I have some non-profit, unpaid stuff I do, and I'm about to start another one that will hopefully be big and change the country.
I love my jobs. I've loved every job I've ever had, mainly because I chose to love them.

I work part time for a private hearing care practice. I do reception/admin work, though I also do a few other bits and pieces if they need me. We mainly deal with the older generation as we look after people with hearing loss, but we also provide noise protection for musicians/motorcyclists etc... Its a well respected, family-run business and my colleagues are sll pretty damned lovely. My boss is brilliant. I'm a lucky girl. I also do nails. I prefer to treat it more like a hobby than a source of income, though I'm currently saving money for all kinds of adventures, so lately I am doing LOTS of nails.

I just started a new job at a small museum in January. I oversee their finances and budget. I am also a museum educator (volunteer) at a major art museum here in New York; I give tours to the public. I've been doing that for five years.
My new job is going well so far. I've been working a lot of extra hours because the person who had my position before me was about 3 months behind and did a lot of the work incorrectly so I've had to catch up/fix a ton of stuff. My goal is to be caught up enough by April so I can work my regular hours (9:30a - 5:30pm).
I love giving tours at the museum. It gives me the opportunity to use my MA in art history; and since the exhibitions change every 3-4 months, I am always learning. I also get to meet interesting people and have engaging conversations on my tours.
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

I’m an accountant – finance manager for a smaller division of a leviathan corporation. I probably average around 55 hours a week, but there’s a lot of variation. If it’s period end, then I’ll work 60 or 70 hours a week. Quarter or year end, perhaps 80 or 90. If it’s a normal week, probably only 45-50.
It’s good fun for the most part. I’ve been lucky enough to retain our group without turnover for about 6 years, and having that level of experience means most of the time I can let the machine run itself and just make sure my own t’s are crossed and i’s are dotted, and I quite like the financial review/analysis aspects of my role. I do hate managing people, though…hate dealing with petty issues & squabbles, hate doing performance reviews, hate having to continuously police my bawdier tendencies – but I’m paid to do a job, so I do what I’m paid to do. I’m planning to shift to something different in about 4 years. I’ve told my boss & told everyone else that it’s my plan to retire in 2017, and assuming society doesn’t collapse that is what I’m working toward. [Edited 2/28/13 5:01am]

My newest job is teaching a film appreciation class at Eastern Michigan University (I got 38 students in my class). I was asked to apply, and I couldn't turn it down, because a university gig is not easy to get if you only have undergrad degrees!
It's my first time officially teaching.
But outside of that, my truly paying work is doing video production, and right now producing a bunch of short films for the Museum of Art here in Ann Arbor. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid
