The Omnipresent Beyonce Syndrome

[img:$uid]http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b59/jbodine/Music%20II/Female/Beyonce-SB-2013.jpg[/img:$uid]

To paraphrase a Bob George line...

For someone who can't stand Beyonce
Y'all sure talk enough about that MF

...lol

Unless i'm speaking to someone I know that is or has worked with/for her, until yesterday (when they ran Superbowl promos during the playoff games I watched), I never hear her music or see anything about her until I come here.

hmmm I'm just wondering if those that constantly complain about her visibility would be as vociferous if it was their pet musical celebrity that was, as they see it anyway, this ubiquitous.

I get what you're saying, and although I don't complain here, sometimes did I feel like she was everywhere:

  • One night I was putting away magazines @ B&N (part-time gig), and it seemed like she was on the cover of every other mag!
  • There was also a point where she was on 3 commercials at the same time...
  • Stores were playing her music when I went shopping...
  • And to add insult to injury, the Student Council in our school was playing her music during passing time...

I felt like I couldn't escape her! shake lol

There is significantly less of her these days, though...

A few suggestions for your instances of TOBS...

  • Burn the magazines
  • Turn off the TV
  • Shop elsewhere
  • Fire the Student Council

... wink

Good luck!

I don't understand why some people don't like her?

She's beautiful and talented. Her private life stays private. Not much controversy around her (stupid conspiracy theories and rants about her "wanting to be white" aside).

She acts like a lady, and she's very mature and poised.

Why do you treat her like she's Kim Kardashian? Just because she's "everywhere"? Well she's everywhere for the right reasons. She's an entertainer, a star.

I almost made this topic but I thought the same. I mean if people really can't stand the girl, don't make threads about her or even post in topics that feature her. lol I admit when it comes to artists some of us claim to not like, we still wound up in their threads... and for what? Is it really that hard to ignore such a thread? Really? lol

There's not a lot of her these days compared to ten years ago, hell even five years ago...

I'd feel the same way about any celebrity. Mainly, because i think I just don't get "it": how we make people so famous for doing pretty much nothing.

I'd agree with your point if this were the only place I see her.

I disagree with the acting like a lady part. To me, in my honest opinion, she acts like the typical video ho.

Also in my opinion, there are way more talented people than her.

I am guilty of coming on some of the threads but for the most part, I can ignore them. I can't stomach 90% of the artists in this forum, some that are loved by a lot of folks here. I think I just get fed up with the oversaturation.

But, I am guilty of not ignoring the threads but am making a conscious effort to do so.

Acts like a typical video ho? How? Because she wears revealing clothes in her videos and dances sexy? No. She doesn't dress like that when she's not on stage. I can clearly see the line between her work life and her private life.

If she had a rap sheet like Kim (sex tape, multiple sex partners), then yeah, hoe. But I don't see it. I'd love some examples though.

It's nothing more than my opinion. I find her performances in videos sleazy. The GQ layout: sleazy. But, I don't have to like it. I have zero problem with anyone seeing the good in her.

The more successful you are the bigger the target fair or unfairly that's part of the human condition. Years ago, I recall an interview with Eddie Murphy, he said he was being offered outrageous amounts of money to endorse this and that, he turned them down. His reasoning was, he feared being overexposed and the public getting sick and tired of seeing him. Just think this was before the Net, Twitter, Facebook, Blog's, 24/7 media, TMZ, Smart-phones ..... I think he had a point. Ms. Knowles may have been a tad overexposed. Of course she not the first person ever to be but now there's an Internet that allows everyone and anyone that's sick of whom or whatever to express their opinion. Its a double edge sword I'm afraid. shrug

Knowles and company have been accused of being less than honest about some songs she supposedly penned and she didn't. She's not the first to be accused of that either; I recall the Rolling Stones Mag riding Led Zeppelin's ass for years accusing them of plagiarism if not outright stealing others music. If you are less than truthful about something now, the computer can fact check your story in a NY minute, oh well. Of course the computer can also put some falsehoods out there too. Like I said, you'll hav to take the good with the bad.

It's just where you get your music news from.

Everywhere I turn, I end up reading the same headline about Beyonce eight times in the same day, all different sources.

I certainly felt a backlash to her last album, 4. And it doesn't seem to be letting up.

I like the new Destiny's Child song, btw.

I showed my family the GQ layout and they wondered why a successful woman, who in one year grossed over 80 million dollars, felt the need to regress to what amounts to a step above a King magazine shoot?

It used to be back in the day that a bumpkin just of the bus in Hollywood with no money and few prospects found herself doing nude/barely nude pictorials.

But I do like Beyonce a lot of the time because she always seems to put 110% into what she's doing, and sometimes to ridiculous affect. She doesn't seem to have that filter that tells her this is too much.

Her Superbowl performance will be legend. She'll try to outdo any good performance at the venue in recent memory. She might fail with Prince, but sorry Madonna.

I remember at one point during the Thriller era,Michael Jackson was afraid of being overexposed. That was one reason why he didn't appear in any of the music videos from the 'Victory' project. Can you imagine how crazy things would have been if we had Twitter,Facebook, blogs, etc. back in those days?! nuts

Ironically, there is another wave of feminism that sees that show of sexuality as empowering. Everyone in the original wave of feminism knows they are being sold the "same old way". Your post mentions Madonna, whose influence on that perspective of female nudism cannot be measured.

I can't imagine anyone making a better Superbowl show than Madonna (for showy-ness) or Prince (for kicking actual ass).

nod but unlike Beyonce,Michael knew that he was overexposed and he took a "real" break between albums. There was a huge gap between Thriller and Bad and he was relatively quiet from 1985 until late '87.

Exactly one of the points I was making.

If it's someone you like, you don't care that they're constantly in your face and you feel no need for them to sit their ass down somewhere or give it a rest. smile

Very possible.

I've been invited to see Beyonce perform live twice.

The real incentive for going the second time was because a friend, drummer Nikki Glaspie, was part of her all-girl band the Suga Mamas.

My curiosity was whether these ladies could really play or not.

I knew about Nikki and was aware of drummer Kim Thompson's reputation, but I left really impressed with the rest of the band.

As for Beyonce, she put on a good show.

My problem with her has always been the material.

Overexposed is overexposed, I don't care if I love your last years draws. lol Too much info, uh? That is why I printed the Dave quote, as I mentioned celebrity can be a double edge sword.

Seriously.

Bingo. "You can fool some of the people some of the time but you can't fool all of the people all of the time." Its the sub-par material that has been pushed as something extraordinary, innovative or new that get some people back up. With pretentiousness comes stickpoke sometimes.

Though I pretty sure Ms. Knowles doesn't give a damn... in the scheme of things.

lowkey

well she's a internet star, this is the age she works in and like most everything these days she is over exposed. i think she is addicted to the limelight or maybe thats all she really got going on for herself.i mean for a woman who claim to be as rich as she is with a even more rich husband she hustles very hard still.most women would be enjoying their new baby and chilling right now, it seems like her child is now a after thought and is more or less a good pr move.far as the question of why people talk about her, these are celeb message boards so thats what folks do talk about celebs.i find that people are more annoyed by beyonce rather then not liking her.

THAT^ is my only professional problem with Beyonce as well. nod As a vocalist, she can definile sing. But her choices of producers/composers/beatmakers are no different from most of the rhythmless bullshit (r&b) that has help made 2000's music below average to my ears.

As for her image and persona, Beyonce (along with LadyGaga & Rihanna) will always be at fault for starting the era of Illuminati Whoring that is now a requirement for some upcoming new female artists to look forward to if they really want the long-term fame.

I'm glad you think she can sing.

Define Illuminati Whoring? I think you need to back this "Illuminati Whoring" to the advent of MTV/BET/VHI. The visual became more important than material or singing, Madonna comes to mind and later Ms. Spears. Sexuality and music doesn't bother me it been apart of music forever as it always has been. I do however have utter contempt for weak mediocre artist / musician's. It goes back to a previous thread of tAudience about the problem with R&B. These record companies are going to have to come to terms with, signing people who can sang or sign swivel head Ken's and Barbie's who can sing on key. Like I said, "You can't fool all the people all the time", to paraphrase Abraham Lincoln.

Exactly. nod The point I attempted to make responding to Tony post, when yours appeared. The downside of an artist creating or extending their "brand" beyond their music seems to have some downsides. Your image becomes a commodity, yeah and such and such sings and "does" music too. More and more these artist look like a product to me, for a lack of a better word. Of course I get the sneaky suspicion that commercial endorsements are a necessity; its where they make most of their income and not necessarily from record sales and concerts. Especially with these 360 degree recording contracts. Its all muddled really...
