Whatever happened to Mo'Nique

She won her Oscar, did that talk show that got cancelled and now nothing. I can't even remember the last film she made.

I was thinking that a few weeks ago when they posted that fake picture of Gabby. She just disappeared all together.

She's working out and getting ready to go back on the road. Her new tour starts January 12th in Atlanta.

She's on Twitter: https://twitter.com/moworldwide

And she posts videos and updates of her goings on, on her website: http://moniqueworldwide.org/

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

It seemed she became sorta larger than life in attitude (which is rumored t be one of the reasons why she lost her BET show)...I'm curious if she got a bit out of control and is facing any kind of Hollywood blacklist of sorts?

I'll never forget when Halle Berry won her Oscar and went on to do a string of bland uninteresting movies after that, and people assuming that she was suddenly this all powerful, call the shots diva of her acting generation were confused, or even mad that she wasn't dong high art and film festival worthy projects: Halle very plainly said that this is not the way Hollywood is run, and if you start making plays like that just because your peers awarded you an Oscar, thinking you are above absolutely every script that comes to you, you'll end up playing yourself right out of the "game" and might not get that next call to be casted.

I'm just speculating of course, but just observing her aloof, chip-on-the-shoulder-behaviors around other actors during the whole press machine whirlwind leading up until the Academy Awards, a part of me could see Mo'nique being riding so high off of her win that she would behave in a way that didn't quite fit an actress knowing that "the role of a lifetime"... you know, the one that garnered them the oscar in the first place- is usually just that that, that rare part in a lifetime body of work that takes you to that mountaintop- unless you're Katherine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Meryl Streep or Jane Fonda, with bodies of work so large and diverse over decades that you keep getting nominated and might end up with 2,3, or 4 after working steadily for 50 years. There would be times I would watch Mo#nique and wondered if by one comment or other had she not burned a bridge.

This actually reminds me of the time she was on The View in the wake of success for Precious and and got a little testy with the hosts: I remember 2,000 year old journalist, ABC news legend and television producer Barbara Walters telling her with an old lady chuckle, "well Mo'nique, when you are gone you should know that we'll all still be here" or something to that effect. It was definitely a reminder of pecking order for me that had nothing to do with race or gender or whatever, it was about power, longevity, connection, and respect...and it felt like grandma Moses was reminding the young whippersnapper to pump her breaks; she was in the hallowed halls of ABC in New York City. It was very interesting to watch those kind of undercurrents play out...no one blinked when Mo'nique got "extra" and were pretty much like, girl please, this is New York...even in their talk show banter with icy Colgate smiles...

In the old Hollywood studio system an Oscar guaranteed good roles ahead, most of the time. Even so, todays actor and actress have to be really good at picking movies after they win to guarantee continued success. Though best supporting actors and actresses appear for some reason to run a greater risk of going into oblivion after wining an Oscar. That being said...

If any one thought Mo'Nique was going to have a substantial movie career after her Oscar run, I'd say they are a tad naive. Hollywood still function on a 1 or 2 Black star at a time... in most instances those roles go to the same people for a decade plus, usually its Black men. She's Black, middle age, and as some would deem overweight so, less get really about why she hasn't had a "film" career after that film for which she won an Oscar. African/American actors are still defined by narrow film opportunities, the very fact some sista's were nominated 75 years after "Gone With the Wind as "the help", speaks volumes.

In terms of her show the Variety rag reported, Mo'Nique didn't get the ratings. Her guest selection was really cool, but Mo'Nique never improved nor learned how to carry a talk show. She's an acquired taste, a lii' chippy, loud, and ruff around the edges, maybe that didn't translate to well. Its one thing if you're a fan (I'm not)... you kinda know what your are getting but if she wanted to reach a wider auidence, Mo"Nique needed to tone it down, I don't think she had it was in her. NEXT! lol

But she's a comedian, right. So she isn't doing any standup anywhere or anything? Or is that a dead art form these days?

1st and 2nd paragraphs...EXACTLY!!! Hollywood has never tripped over themselves to create roles for AA women, period. Anyone thinking Mo'Nique winning an Oscar was going to all of a sudden change that, wasn't naive. They were freaking delusional!

3rd paragraph...AND she got her show on BET at the time when BET had pissed off its core audience which consists of her core audience, to the point beyond return. Her show was doomed from the start, in spite of her attitude and really cool guests.

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Really if crying jig women with werewolf feet can maintain a show, anyone should be able too, seriously.

How many seasons was the Mo'Nique talk show? I must admit I very seldom watched because I could find BET on my cable most of the time... long story. Even so, BET should've considered giving her more time to learn the ropes. I'll tell you one person she needed to replace her sidekick, that guy got on my last nerve. lol

Doesnt Mo'Nique also does some kind of cooking show, or was that before her BET talk show?? Over here in the UK we have a few urban channels, devoted to the black culture and they show some cooking show hosted by her!!!

All very good points.

Insofar as her talk show style, I remember many a black woman of a certain age and season in life reacting and responding that all that loudness by saying she gave them a headache . After a long day's work the last thing you wanna hear is a bunch of screamin' & hollerin' at 10 o'clock at night. lol

As for tonin' it down, I always think of this one right here who used to be so ratchet, and toned herself for American media:

She's still a gossip maven, but a lot less aggressive and malicious as she was when she had a radio career. Things change once you're actually an invited member to the party vs. one who operates on the fringes or just plain bulldozes and crahes it, I suppose. lol

That was her band leader; they always expect those dudes to chime in with playful sidekick banter ( a la Paul Scaheffer from Letterman, Doc Severnsomn from The Tonight Show back in the day) but Mo'Niques dude always fell flat for me. His stage presence as a wingman just didn't carry over at.all. lol

She wore a gardenia in her hair as tribute to Hattoe Mc Daniels if I remember correctly.

She did act the hell out of that role in Precious. It'r rare that we see someone get so deep into a character that pulls of that level of diabolicism and sickness. We hear abot them on the news when things go wrong, but the inner hell that people go through surround themselves in their immediate world...yeah that was one of the Oscar roles up there with Heath Ledger/Joker in Batman, Eileen Warnos (Charlire Theron in Monster)...it was grab your heart make your stomach hurt twisted, like a Gloria Naylor character on pick-a-drug.

she won the Golden Globe as well...her make-up was on point that night lol
