This is something I always wondered and always wanted to ask, and it struck me again looking at your picture; - is it generally acceptable or even common in American households to keep on your shoes inside, or is it only when you are having some sort of "dinner party" and more people are coming over that it is alright? I have noticed that on some occasions (and in movies, of course, although I don't take that quite as literally) and have wondered about it for a while now.

Yeah Dave, we typically keep our shoes on. ESPECIALLY when visiting...I find it almost rude to take them off. When I visit some friends they always tell me to "relax" and "take my shoes off"...I do it only because I'm very comfortable around them.

There are of course people with expensive flooring that ask people to take their shoes off, but they're the exception not the rule. Asian households are known for a "no shoe" policy.

Growing up I had ONE friend whose mom made us take our shoes off when we visited him...we all thought she was nuts (she wasn't Asian). nuts

Thank you!

It is very common in households to leave shoes on..Unless they are very dirty or snowy and wet.. If someone came over and took their shoes off I would consider that rude and to familiar, unless like PJ said, if they are close friends or family, then it wouldnt be weird... bare sweaty feet on my carpet is kind of gross!

Now if I had white carpet I would probably ask for them to take them off, or offer shoe covers but then that would be weird for them...

First thing my son and daughter do when they come over is take their shoes off, but thats how they are comfy and it doesnt bother me because they have my DNA.. lol

I don't know any household that leaves their shoes on in the house. It's always been considered rude and looked at as it dirtying up a house. Guess it's more of an American thing and not a North American thing.

Guess so...
I don't know of any household that asks you to take them off, other than my friend's wife...
She thought it was a good idea to have white carpeting through her whole house.

No. Not in whole Europe.

The Dutch don't take their shoes of, unless at very close friends or upon request.

And I think it's the same in England, Belgium & Germany

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

In Minnesota it really varies. In general I think most folks take their shoes off (in winter it's a pretty much a must!) unless it's a party or event of some kind. And then you're usually leaving them on.

It also has to do with level of comfort, as others said. If it's close friends or family you probably take them off, if not, you might ask as you enter someone's house whether you should or not.

That's really interesting.

In Austria, there's usually quite a complicated routine of politeness: When the guest enters, the host usually says "oh, please, do keep your shoes on!" (especially if it's just a short visit), and the guest ignores that request and does take their shoes off. In the end, the host is happy. lol

But yeah, over here you hardly ever keep your shoes on when you enter someone's house.

Interesting. From what I witnessed, it was quite similar to how it was in Austria. However, things may be different up north. Where did you live, if I may ask?

A tiny town called Tiefenstockheim... nearest bigger town was Kitzingen, which was maybe 30mins from Wurzburg.

Over here, taking one's shoes off is seen as some kind of laborious act (as it takes time and some sort of effort to put them off and on again), so the host offers the guest the opportunity to not bother and leave their shoes on.

It's happening more and more. Because of all the bacteria, chemicals, and sh*t you step on then spread through out your house via shoes.

It's for the better. Unless you have tile floors( Which my brother has.).
