Gun Threats at my Kid's High School

Last night, my 17 year old son tells me that some girl posts on her facebook page that she's not going to school Friday because of the whole Mayan thing and "some shit's going to be going down." He texts her and asks her what she's talking about. She said that at least five people said they were bring guns to school on Friday.

I called the non-emergency sheriff number and told them. They sent an officer over to get the whole story and I gave him copies of the FB post and the text conversation. He said that he would be informing the school authorities that night and following up with the girl, etc. Just the day before, some kid got arrested at another high school in our area for talking about shooting up his school.

The officer told me that threats like these fall under terrorism laws and it's punishable with up to 20 years in prison!

Our school system has implemented some new security measures effective immediately, which is great. I emailed our principal last night and asked him if they are making it clear to these kids that threats, even idle ones, are extremely serious and they can get in massive trouble. I don't think these kids realize that.

I don't believe that the kids who said they were bringing guns to school were serious, but better safe than sorry, right?

good job. thank you very much for taking what I would say it the exact correct action. I do not think it could have been done any better.

People with kids, need to talk to them about not keeping these things secret.

sigh

After the Connecticut shootings, some idiots made threats against my daughter's school. They cancelled all afterschool activities for the week and forbade the use of backpacks/bags.

mad

Word is that they caught the culprits (High Schoolers...surprise!surprise!) and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

thumbs up!

Idiots. Probably breeding too. disbelief

Good job!

Just this week on Tuesday our school had a bomb threat and we were directed to evacuate the building. It was very scary. Turns out it was all because our football team won the championship against the kid's town. Some people don't learn from Connecticut. disbelief

It got so crazy today with mass hysteria and anxiety at the school, they ended up canceling school tomorrow (the last day before Christmas break). In fact, dozens of Michigan schools had to cancel tomorrow.

The district implemented some additional security measures this week. Effective immediately, all classrooms will be locked during class time. They're getting a security firm to have guards at each school's entry doors, which will be locked once school starts. That's good, but our schools don't have metal detectors. I wonder if they will get those too.

One not-so-well thought out thing though, is that they had police doing exercises at the school today, without telling the kids before hand. They were testing response times and whatnot. The kids who saw the officers, freaked out. They should have done this after school.

^ Yeah that's how chaos ensues. People fail to use common sense. Of course no one knows if people are planning any murder or suicide in a place like that, but you gotta be cautious. You think people would've heeded that warning after Columbine.

Good for you, I would have done the same thing.

Check out this pathetic story I heard on the news this morning.

Cops patrol Haverhill school buses after BB attacks

Frustrated Haverhill cops are putting extra officers on the town’s school bus routes today after a BB-gun toting punk shot out windows on two buses filled with kids, stoking the fears of students and parents already on edge after last week’s horrific shooting in Newtown, police said.

“It’s hard to describe. It is frustrating,” said Haverhill Deputy Chief Donald Thompson. “It’s sad that somebody could think that this is a joke or something. It’s a serious incident. Somebody on one of those buses could have been hurt.”

Police reported no major injuries, other than glass falling onto students in the bus in one incident. But yesterday’s two incidents prompted police to dedicate extra patrols to the morning stops, including officers at the schools and, at least yesterday, officers physically on the buses, Thompson said.

The first incident happened around 11:30 a.m., at Main and Marshland streets when a window was shot at on a bus carrying children between the ages of 3 and 5, police said. Roughly three hours later, a different bus carrying high school students had its window shot out as it was traveling on Winter Street, near Hale Street.

Police said both times, the shooter used either a BB or pellet gun, and each bus was full. They are urging anyone with information to call officers at 978-373-1212.

Thompson said the person responsible could face charges, including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. With the town’s schools going on winter vacation next week, Thompson said police will “readdress the situation” when the students return.
